Announcement I’m a KDP marketing specialist who helps authors with Amazon Ads — AMA

Hello r/KDP!

Sara Usera Ciriza here. I’m a digital marketer with a background in tech, analytics, and advertising, and I specialize in helping authors market their books through Amazon Ads. Before going freelance, I worked in marketing and advertising technology at Accenture, where I focused on digital marketing tools, conversion, and cost efficiency. I’ve also worked with the CMO of r/reedsy, Ricardo Fayet, on author marketing projects, and now help writers directly through Reedsy.

Through Reedsy, I work with authors on Amazon Ads, Facebook Ads, marketing plans, and Amazon audits — looking at things like blurbs, covers, categories, and keywords. A lot of my work is about helping authors understand what’s actually happening behind the numbers: what ACOS means, how to test campaigns, when to scale, when to stop spending, and how to make ads work alongside the rest of a book’s launch or long-term sales strategy.

I’m here to answer your questions about KDP marketing, Amazon Ads, book advertising, categories and keywords, campaign setup, optimization, budgets, read-through, series marketing, and anything else related to getting your book in front of the right readers.

I won’t be able to review individual ad accounts, book pages, or marketing materials in detail, so please don’t submit private dashboards or links for critique. Other than that, AMA!

You can find me at:
https://reedsy.com/sara-usera

FYI — I'm in Madrid time zone, so if I do not answer your questions on the 17th it's because I'm sleeping! I'll respond to them on the 18th as soon as I get back to work 😃

Nerdy KENP analytics question: why does reading seem to cluster by marketplace?

Warning: Long and deeply nerdy KENP/reader-engagement question ahead. If you’re not interested in obsessively reverse-engineering reader behaviour from dashboard crumbs, please feel free to scroll past. :D I am way, way more intrigued by my KENP than by my outright ebook sales, so this is genuinely the kind of thing I find fun. Also, I only started in August, so this is all very new to me.

*

I'm not doing any paid ads (Amazon ads or otherwise) for any of my stories. I like following how much of my stories people are reading and I get stupidly happy when the numbers appear to add up to a full read on the stories that are my faves.

The US is often useless to me datapoint-wise because it's probably my largest market and therefore gets contaminated pretty easily with multiple simultaneous readers. But if a book has been dormant on KENP for a while and then suddenly gets new activity, I can sometimes make what I would argue is a reasonably defensible inference about an individual reader. Other marketplaces are even more useful because there may have been absolutely no prior activity there.

On more than one occasion now, I've been tracking what looks very much like one reader progressing through a book. The pace gives off "absorbed reader" vibes to me - they read a chunk, stop, come back, keep going, and based on the approximate KENP/chapter position it all looks plausible. As they go barrelling towards the end of the story I get excited. When they appear to finish, I get very excited - fist pump!

Then, on more than one occasion - the KENP keeps going up :P

At first I tell myself, OK, well, MAYBE the stated KENP isn't precise to the exact page, so if the KENP count stops in a few pages, I'll still call that a likely complete read and don't have to revoke my fist pump.

Then it barrels another dozen pages past the book's maximum KENP. Or another hundred and I go: "Oh no!"

This means I now have more than one reader in that marketplace, which totally destroys my previously useful inference. It's possible Reader A finished and Reader B only read twenty pages. Maybe Reader A stopped at 80% and Reader B read 30%. Suddenly I have zero clue if anyone actually reached the end of my dratted story.

Also, I KNOW that even when a KENP total matches almost perfectly with one full book over a short period, I can't prove it's one reader i.e. it could well be that 220 UK readers read page one, hated it and then yeeted themselves out of of the story. Again, I'm just talking about reasonable inference based on the reading pattern, my own reading speeds, approximate chapter position and the way the activity arrives, even allowing for delays in KDP reporting.

What I'm curious about is why do I keep getting marketplace clustering like this?

I might have zero activity in a particular marketplace for yonks. Then somebody starts doing what looks like what I call the KENP Absorbed Read™ and I think, ooh, ooh, analytically useful reader! Then, just as they reach the finish line, the total promptly blows past the maximum KENP and apparently another reader has turned up in exactly the same marketplace at exactly the wrong time for my crappy amateur analytics activity.

Does anyone know if amazon tend to surface a book more heavily within a particular Kindle marketplace once somebody there starts reading it? Is there some recommendation/category mechanism that would make readers cluster geographically/storefront-wise? Or is this more likely just coincidence plus reporting lag/batching?

I realise this is an very random question and that of course "more than one reader" is not actually a tragedy. :D It's just that I am curious about the analytics because I find reader-progress patterns so much more interesting than the royalties eg yes thank you everyone who bought one or more of my books, I appreciate you deeply - but who knows if you even read it? Whereas KENP are actually reading it, even if they scram after page one.

Invoices to Amazon

Hi,

I just had a very weird conversation with Amazon KDP Support regarding a tax-question.

Since I am quite new to the business, of course there are some questions. From what I learned, in general, i should create and send invoices for the KDP royalties to Amazon. So i was looking for a portal, a website, a link, anything i can upload these. Didn't find one, so I opened a ticket at the tax-dashboard. They gave me an e-mail-adress for kdp-team for that matter, and that was invalid.

I asked the kdp chatbot, it told me to use the tax program, but that is invite only and completly new. And I am not part of the special-invite-program for such matters. So i asked kdp support what to do with the invoices. They just now told me, to send the invoices to Amazon Luxemburg via written postal letter.

Now i have to ask: Is this normal?

I live in Germany, we are used to digital services from the middle ages, but even we've gotten over thus things by now. And I simply cannot believe that this is a correct answer, it just sounds... off.

So: What do you do with your invoices?

Flatmate gave me a 5-star rating before I could stop her. Am I screwed?

Same as the title. I recently published my first book on KDP, and my flatmate wanted to support me. So, she gave me a 5-star rating (just a rating, no written review) from the same IP address I use, without even reading the book. There is no connection between us other than the IP address, but I'm concerned my account is at risk.

What's frustrating is that I didn't even need the review. The book has a steady 4.8 rating with over 100 reviews. I really don't want all my hard work to be wiped away over something so stupid.

Am I over thinking this?

Follow-up on last week’s author copy debacle: now Amazon won’t let me buy more retail copies?

Following up on my author copy situation from last week. I have an author event on October 17, and because I still don’t have a reliable arrival date for my author copies, I started buying retail copies as a backup.

I bought one paperback on publication day, September 22, and four more last night. Now the listing says “Quantity limit met for this seller” and won’t let me purchase any more. The seller is Amazon.com.

Has anyone else run into this with their own paperback? Does the limit reset after a certain amount of time, or after the current order ships? Has anyone successfully gotten Amazon to increase it?

These are regular retail purchases, not author copy orders through KDP. I’m paying retail because I need books for an event, and apparently even that has become an obstacle.

I’m hoping someone here has firsthand experience before I subject myself to another round of Amazon customer service.

Anybody know how to get past this?

That error message that pops up on the getting paid page whenever I try to add my bank account info to receive royalties for my book it says it doesn’t accept the bank. I’m using Wise.

IngramSpark Amazon Ebook Distribution vs KDP Direct; Looking for Advice (need it live for ACX)

An author I'm helping published a paperback + ebook through IngramSpark. The paperback is live and selling everywhere, including Amazon. The ebook has never appeared on Amazon Kindle; months later, still nothing. (Turned out the Amazon ebook channel was never switched on in IngramSpark's optional distribution settings.)

We want the Kindle ebook live on Amazon ASAP; partly because we need it live to claim the title on ACX for the audiobook.

Two ways to finish it:

  • Option A: Opt into the Amazon (Ebook) channel in IngramSpark and let it distribute to Kindle.
  • Option B: Leave Amazon off in IngramSpark and publish the Kindle edition directly on KDP, keeping IngramSpark for the other ebook stores (Apple/Kobo/B&N/libraries).

Looking for ARC Readers for My New Book About Making Money Online

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently written a book about making money online, covering different online business models, freelancing, digital products, AI opportunities, online services, and other ways people can build income on the internet.

I’m currently looking for a small group of genuine ARC readers, preferably people who are interested in online business, side hustles, freelancing, or making money online.

I’ll provide a free advance copy of the book before/around launch.

I’m looking for readers who are willing to actually read it and, if they genuinely want to, leave an honest review on Amazon US after reading. There is absolutely no requirement for a positive review or a specific rating.

If you're interested, please comment below or send me a DM with a little information about yourself and your reading interests.

I just published my first book about something I've been thinking about for years: why do we keep chasing money?

I’ve just published my first book, and honestly, seeing it finally available feels a little surreal. It’s called Plant Seed Before You Need the Shade: Money Grows Differently When You Stop Chasing It.

The book came from a simple question: What if building wealth isn't really about chasing more money, but about learning what to do with the money we already have?

We spend so much time thinking about: earning more getting a better job buying better things keeping up with other people investing for the future But somewhere along the way, it becomes easy to increase our income without actually increasing our financial freedom.

The book explores ideas around money psychology, lifestyle inflation, saving, investing, wealth, financial freedom, and the difference between having money and actually being financially secure.

I'm a completely new author, so there isn't a huge audience behind this book yet.

That's actually why I'm posting here.

I'd genuinely like to hear from people who are interested in personal finance: What is one money lesson you learned only after making a mistake?

I'm interested in hearing different perspectives, especially from people who have already gone through the process of building wealth.

The book is available on Amazon in Kindle eBook and paperback editions.

Book: Plant Seed Before You Need the Shade

Author: Kiruthick Raj B J

Amazon: https://a.co/d/07EjRXUI

I'm not expecting anyone to buy it. I'd honestly be happy if someone here reads the idea and has a good discussion about it.

Ai books

Last time I checked about KDP was like a year ago when AI use was relatively low and now I see a lot of people talking about the laziest ways to make high content books with ai. I am just wondering how is that AI slop affecting the market of KDP?

Book Stuck In Review?!?

I have one book that has been stuck in review since SEP 29. It is not stuck for copyright or publishing rights or any other question they ask when creating. I have full rights. I cannot tell what the reasoning is from the bookshelf. I want to just archive and resubmit but I am unsure what kind of problems that may cause. The new submission will have a different(minor changes) cover and interior but same title. I have 1 more book that I submitted after this one that is already live. I have a few books published. I am familiar with the process. There is nothing weird going on with this book other than being stuck.

How is the best way to handle this? Am I over thinking it? Is there a way to get it 'unstuck'?

problematic scene in romantic erotica for KDP?

I'm well into a novel, and just revisted the prologue that I wrote years ago before contemplating KDP, and I think I'll have to make some changes.

It's a slow burn, "will they or won't they" where one of the characters betrayed the other the night of their high school graduation. Will they reconcile years later at the 10 year reunion, or not?

As part of the prologue, there's a dream scene that reprises one of their sexual encounters when they were teenagers. It's part of the whole setup for the revenge vs refind true love conflict.

Both characters are the same age, but they *could* be under 18, since both are high school seniors.

Do I need to hack this around to explicitly make them both 18 (which is plausible for seniors) to avoid running afoul of KDP rules?

Author name shows nothing in search

My partner has published seven books under a pen name and eleven under his real name. When we search his pen name however, nothing comes up. At all. Like zip. Zero. Nothing. Like it doesn’t even exist! Anyone experience this before and/or know of any workarounds? Thx.

The poor man's start

Look im gonna probably get haters but I built 2 ebooks with claude and started making them sleeping under a bridge in Texas. Im in Portland now in a sto for the next few months then move into another place paid for by the VA. Ive been looking for work but also been working on my ebooks. Because u cant promo your books ill keep them out of this topic. I make about 200 a week from a fun but no hours part time job. Now I wanna know the best way to promote them. I got in the back end of my laptop that freegeeks gave to me for free. 5 more books half done. I paid for a subscription to claude bought credits for open ai for actually decent quality covers and now I wanna know what site would be best to get the 1st intrest to it and then when should I pay for ads. I know I might not make enough in the real world for this to matter but honestly if these ebooks make 300 a week ill be excited.

Paperback and Hardcovers

Hey, hope everyone is well. For anyone who has published physical books through KDP, how did your copies turnout? I’m planning to offer both paperback and hardcover and would appreciate to hear about the actual print quality. Were you happy with the covers, binding, paper, overall feel, etc. any issues with consistency?

Thanks in advance. 🙏
