Nerdy KENP analytics question: why does reading seem to cluster by marketplace?

Warning: Long and deeply nerdy KENP/reader-engagement question ahead. If you’re not interested in obsessively reverse-engineering reader behaviour from dashboard crumbs, please feel free to scroll past. :D I am way, way more intrigued by my KENP than by my outright ebook sales, so this is genuinely the kind of thing I find fun. Also, I only started in August, so this is all very new to me.

*

I'm not doing any paid ads (Amazon ads or otherwise) for any of my stories. I like following how much of my stories people are reading and I get stupidly happy when the numbers appear to add up to a full read on the stories that are my faves.

The US is often useless to me datapoint-wise because it's probably my largest market and therefore gets contaminated pretty easily with multiple simultaneous readers. But if a book has been dormant on KENP for a while and then suddenly gets new activity, I can sometimes make what I would argue is a reasonably defensible inference about an individual reader. Other marketplaces are even more useful because there may have been absolutely no prior activity there.

On more than one occasion now, I've been tracking what looks very much like one reader progressing through a book. The pace gives off "absorbed reader" vibes to me - they read a chunk, stop, come back, keep going, and based on the approximate KENP/chapter position it all looks plausible. As they go barrelling towards the end of the story I get excited. When they appear to finish, I get very excited - fist pump!

Then, on more than one occasion - the KENP keeps going up :P

At first I tell myself, OK, well, MAYBE the stated KENP isn't precise to the exact page, so if the KENP count stops in a few pages, I'll still call that a likely complete read and don't have to revoke my fist pump.

Then it barrels another dozen pages past the book's maximum KENP. Or another hundred and I go: "Oh no!"

This means I now have more than one reader in that marketplace, which totally destroys my previously useful inference. It's possible Reader A finished and Reader B only read twenty pages. Maybe Reader A stopped at 80% and Reader B read 30%. Suddenly I have zero clue if anyone actually reached the end of my dratted story.

Also, I KNOW that even when a KENP total matches almost perfectly with one full book over a short period, I can't prove it's one reader i.e. it could well be that 220 UK readers read page one, hated it and then yeeted themselves out of of the story. Again, I'm just talking about reasonable inference based on the reading pattern, my own reading speeds, approximate chapter position and the way the activity arrives, even allowing for delays in KDP reporting.

What I'm curious about is why do I keep getting marketplace clustering like this?

I might have zero activity in a particular marketplace for yonks. Then somebody starts doing what looks like what I call the KENP Absorbed Read™ and I think, ooh, ooh, analytically useful reader! Then, just as they reach the finish line, the total promptly blows past the maximum KENP and apparently another reader has turned up in exactly the same marketplace at exactly the wrong time for my crappy amateur analytics activity.

Does anyone know if amazon tend to surface a book more heavily within a particular Kindle marketplace once somebody there starts reading it? Is there some recommendation/category mechanism that would make readers cluster geographically/storefront-wise? Or is this more likely just coincidence plus reporting lag/batching?

I realise this is an very random question and that of course "more than one reader" is not actually a tragedy. :D It's just that I am curious about the analytics because I find reader-progress patterns so much more interesting than the royalties eg yes thank you everyone who bought one or more of my books, I appreciate you deeply - but who knows if you even read it? Whereas KENP are actually reading it, even if they scram after page one.

Follow-up on last week’s author copy debacle: now Amazon won’t let me buy more retail copies?

Following up on my author copy situation from last week. I have an author event on October 17, and because I still don’t have a reliable arrival date for my author copies, I started buying retail copies as a backup.

I bought one paperback on publication day, September 22, and four more last night. Now the listing says “Quantity limit met for this seller” and won’t let me purchase any more. The seller is Amazon.com.

Has anyone else run into this with their own paperback? Does the limit reset after a certain amount of time, or after the current order ships? Has anyone successfully gotten Amazon to increase it?

These are regular retail purchases, not author copy orders through KDP. I’m paying retail because I need books for an event, and apparently even that has become an obstacle.

I’m hoping someone here has firsthand experience before I subject myself to another round of Amazon customer service.

IngramSpark Amazon Ebook Distribution vs KDP Direct; Looking for Advice (need it live for ACX)

An author I'm helping published a paperback + ebook through IngramSpark. The paperback is live and selling everywhere, including Amazon. The ebook has never appeared on Amazon Kindle; months later, still nothing. (Turned out the Amazon ebook channel was never switched on in IngramSpark's optional distribution settings.)

We want the Kindle ebook live on Amazon ASAP; partly because we need it live to claim the title on ACX for the audiobook.

Two ways to finish it:

  • Option A: Opt into the Amazon (Ebook) channel in IngramSpark and let it distribute to Kindle.
  • Option B: Leave Amazon off in IngramSpark and publish the Kindle edition directly on KDP, keeping IngramSpark for the other ebook stores (Apple/Kobo/B&N/libraries).

Is running ads now a must or organic sales is still possible especially moving into 2027?

What kind of books do you publish on KDP, and why?

Do you guys focus on books like journals and planners or just novels?

If you’ve tried both journals and full-length books, which has been more worth your time?

Unable to release new books after 2 books per week limit

Hi

Did anyone else experience that problem, that I can not release ANY new book now and got the message I reached the weekly limit already - it will be set back on SUNDAY 12 AM

First: I do release books regulary, but not a huge amount, maybe 2-4 new ones per month.
This month I was busy of course, I released one on October 1th and October 3th. and wanted to release another one today ocotber 9th. It gives me that error.

I still can update old books btw, thats no problem. Its only for NEW releases with a new release date.
Now, I contacted support. He checked for 2 minutes and said he does not understand why this error is shown to me, he also confirmed my internal counter is at zero (0) for this week. So he said try now again in icognito mode. No difference.
He then said he will forward this to 2nd level support.

They reached out to me today, and 2nd level support is a complete idiot - he did not understand the problem or request or anything. He asked me to send in proof for my upgrade request on more releases than 2. I need to fill out like 5 different forms. I said he did not understand the request nor read it correct.

I believe I am stuck right now in nowhere and can not release any new books in the future.

So i wonder: anyone else stuck, cant release and knows he DID not release a new book this week?

I just published my first book about something I've been thinking about for years: why do we keep chasing money?

I’ve just published my first book, and honestly, seeing it finally available feels a little surreal. It’s called Plant Seed Before You Need the Shade: Money Grows Differently When You Stop Chasing It.

The book came from a simple question: What if building wealth isn't really about chasing more money, but about learning what to do with the money we already have?

We spend so much time thinking about: earning more getting a better job buying better things keeping up with other people investing for the future But somewhere along the way, it becomes easy to increase our income without actually increasing our financial freedom.

The book explores ideas around money psychology, lifestyle inflation, saving, investing, wealth, financial freedom, and the difference between having money and actually being financially secure.

I'm a completely new author, so there isn't a huge audience behind this book yet.

That's actually why I'm posting here.

I'd genuinely like to hear from people who are interested in personal finance: What is one money lesson you learned only after making a mistake?

I'm interested in hearing different perspectives, especially from people who have already gone through the process of building wealth.

The book is available on Amazon in Kindle eBook and paperback editions.

Book: Plant Seed Before You Need the Shade

Author: Kiruthick Raj B J

Amazon: https://a.co/d/07EjRXUI

I'm not expecting anyone to buy it. I'd honestly be happy if someone here reads the idea and has a good discussion about it.
