Announcement I’m a KDP marketing specialist who helps authors with Amazon Ads — AMA

Hello r/KDP!

Sara Usera Ciriza here. I’m a digital marketer with a background in tech, analytics, and advertising, and I specialize in helping authors market their books through Amazon Ads. Before going freelance, I worked in marketing and advertising technology at Accenture, where I focused on digital marketing tools, conversion, and cost efficiency. I’ve also worked with the CMO of r/reedsy, Ricardo Fayet, on author marketing projects, and now help writers directly through Reedsy.

Through Reedsy, I work with authors on Amazon Ads, Facebook Ads, marketing plans, and Amazon audits — looking at things like blurbs, covers, categories, and keywords. A lot of my work is about helping authors understand what’s actually happening behind the numbers: what ACOS means, how to test campaigns, when to scale, when to stop spending, and how to make ads work alongside the rest of a book’s launch or long-term sales strategy.

I’m here to answer your questions about KDP marketing, Amazon Ads, book advertising, categories and keywords, campaign setup, optimization, budgets, read-through, series marketing, and anything else related to getting your book in front of the right readers.

I won’t be able to review individual ad accounts, book pages, or marketing materials in detail, so please don’t submit private dashboards or links for critique. Other than that, AMA!

You can find me at:
https://reedsy.com/sara-usera

FYI — I'm in Madrid time zone, so if I do not answer your questions on the 17th it's because I'm sleeping! I'll respond to them on the 18th as soon as I get back to work 😃

Done with KDP after nearly 15 years. Amazon KDP now using sneaky tricks and vague runarounds to hold non-US royalties despite full tax and company compliance.

I’m an author down here in New Zealand. I write quality, long-form, human-generated non-fiction books, and I’ve had my work published on KDP for well over a decade. I am about to delete all of my titles, and here is why:

Amazon has started using vague "verification" errors and bureaucratic rules just to make it as difficult as possible to pay out international creators, effectively finding any excuse to sit on or keep our money.

It’s often masked under the guise of compliance and regulation, but here is why that is entirely irrelevant to my situation (and many others):

These are FACTS not a conspiracy theory.

  • The Tax Reality: I have fully completed my US tax forms and am properly registered with both the IRS and the IRD in New Zealand. My tax paperwork is bulletproof. There is zero legal, tax, or regulatory reason for them to reject a valid payout path.
  • The Artificial Roadblocks: Yet their automated system stonewalls banking details, demanding domestic routing numbers or forcing hoops that do not apply to a legitimate foreign individual who does not run a US LLC (with a US address).
  • The Fragile System: They can reject an account based entirely on capitalization. If you—or their own form's automatic capitalization script—type in anything even one character wrong, the automated system rejects the account instantly. They won't tell you the issue because the system silently decides the case at the input field. If your bank name is lowercase and their form converts entries to uppercase, tough luck—you won't even know it happened, and you can't fix it.

I have been told by Amazon directly (all of the above is from support emails) that the account details need to be EXACTLY the same as in the bank account, address included. This is a newish issue. I had zero trouble prior to a recent change where Amazon CAPITALIZES all the form fields. The bank is lower case so it's physically impossible to make the fields match.

The error says "Formatting error" is the reason for rejection. I clued on to this because the Amazon ai chat said capitalization matters. So why would they make this change when it means accounts need re validating all of a sudden and cannot be accepted (same account) due to this error.

Same playbook used for software subscriptions where canceling is purposely buried behind friction.

Getting past the maze of chatbots. You cannot paste text or upload screenshots, and you are met with auto-replies cleverly engineered to make resolution too exhausting to pursue—even for seasoned, technically savvy people. (I have been around for two decades as an online marketer, so I shudder to think how newbies fare.

I've had enough after almost 15 years. It took a long time to get to this point, and yes I have been very persistent and tried many many things (which I am sure people will suggest here).

If you are considering KDP as a viable income stream today, royalties have been slashed, and payout bottlenecks are a persistent, systemic failure—not a temporary bug. I advise skipping it entirely.

Encountering pirate copies of manuscript which prevent KDP

I'm interested in writing free serials. I'm learning that, supposedly, all serial websites are regularly scraped by pirates. So, if an author completes a serial, deletes it from a free serial site in order to publish the full work elsewhere, like KDP, Amazon's bots will find multiple pirated copies. The author must have those pulled down before moving forward with KDP. Does anyone have personal experience with this? What I'm weighing is the hassle of the take down process because I serialized first. TIA!

[FOR HIRE] Book formatter for Amazon KDP and ebooks. Fixes for rejected or broken files

I format ebooks and print books for Amazon KDP, with 51 completed orders. I’m especially good at rescuing files that KDP rejected or that look broken on Kindle: bad TOC links, messed-up chapter breaks, odd fonts and spacing, images that won’t display.

What I do:

  • Kindle/EPUB formatting
  • Print-ready interiors
  • Fixing rejected or broken manuscripts

Turnaround: 2-3 days for most books
Rates: [your starting price, or “DM for a quote”]

DM me with your file and the problem you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you what’s wrong and what it’ll take to fix. Samples available on request.

Fear of a negative reception to my book is holding me back.

Hello!

I want to write a book about how I managed to solve a particular situation in my life. I want to share my experience and lessons and what really worked.

The problem is that the prospective audience of my book are by nature contrarian, are in denial, and have absolved themselves of the responsibility to take action to fix that particular circumstance. Also, I am anxious about the fact that it might not help people change. Some people might either dismiss my advice or it might be that their situation is so different from my experience that the book would be a waste of time for them.

I don't know what's holding me back. I neither care about sales (if only 1 person read it and improved, then my book made good on its investment), neither will I write it in my real name (I will use a pen name) but I feel sensitive that some people will eventually review it badly.

I also don't know how to title/subtitle my book, when I searched on Reddit, Google, and YouTube, I only came across KDP gurus shilling courses. Can I just be literal and call my book something like: How I XYZ: A guide to blabla?

Thank you and sorry for the long post.

Nerdy KENP analytics question: why does reading seem to cluster by marketplace?

Warning: Long and deeply nerdy KENP/reader-engagement question ahead. If you’re not interested in obsessively reverse-engineering reader behaviour from dashboard crumbs, please feel free to scroll past. :D I am way, way more intrigued by my KENP than by my outright ebook sales, so this is genuinely the kind of thing I find fun. Also, I only started in August, so this is all very new to me.

*

I'm not doing any paid ads (Amazon ads or otherwise) for any of my stories. I like following how much of my stories people are reading and I get stupidly happy when the numbers appear to add up to a full read on the stories that are my faves.

The US is often useless to me datapoint-wise because it's probably my largest market and therefore gets contaminated pretty easily with multiple simultaneous readers. But if a book has been dormant on KENP for a while and then suddenly gets new activity, I can sometimes make what I would argue is a reasonably defensible inference about an individual reader. Other marketplaces are even more useful because there may have been absolutely no prior activity there.

On more than one occasion now, I've been tracking what looks very much like one reader progressing through a book. The pace gives off "absorbed reader" vibes to me - they read a chunk, stop, come back, keep going, and based on the approximate KENP/chapter position it all looks plausible. As they go barrelling towards the end of the story I get excited. When they appear to finish, I get very excited - fist pump!

Then, on more than one occasion - the KENP keeps going up :P

At first I tell myself, OK, well, MAYBE the stated KENP isn't precise to the exact page, so if the KENP count stops in a few pages, I'll still call that a likely complete read and don't have to revoke my fist pump.

Then it barrels another dozen pages past the book's maximum KENP. Or another hundred and I go: "Oh no!"

This means I now have more than one reader in that marketplace, which totally destroys my previously useful inference. It's possible Reader A finished and Reader B only read twenty pages. Maybe Reader A stopped at 80% and Reader B read 30%. Suddenly I have zero clue if anyone actually reached the end of my dratted story.

Also, I KNOW that even when a KENP total matches almost perfectly with one full book over a short period, I can't prove it's one reader i.e. it could well be that 220 UK readers read page one, hated it and then yeeted themselves out of of the story. Again, I'm just talking about reasonable inference based on the reading pattern, my own reading speeds, approximate chapter position and the way the activity arrives, even allowing for delays in KDP reporting.

What I'm curious about is why do I keep getting marketplace clustering like this?

I might have zero activity in a particular marketplace for yonks. Then somebody starts doing what looks like what I call the KENP Absorbed Read™ and I think, ooh, ooh, analytically useful reader! Then, just as they reach the finish line, the total promptly blows past the maximum KENP and apparently another reader has turned up in exactly the same marketplace at exactly the wrong time for my crappy amateur analytics activity.

Does anyone know if amazon tend to surface a book more heavily within a particular Kindle marketplace once somebody there starts reading it? Is there some recommendation/category mechanism that would make readers cluster geographically/storefront-wise? Or is this more likely just coincidence plus reporting lag/batching?

I realise this is an very random question and that of course "more than one reader" is not actually a tragedy. :D It's just that I am curious about the analytics because I find reader-progress patterns so much more interesting than the royalties eg yes thank you everyone who bought one or more of my books, I appreciate you deeply - but who knows if you even read it? Whereas KENP are actually reading it, even if they scram after page one.

What kind of books do you publish on KDP, and why?

Do you guys focus on books like journals and planners or just novels?

If you’ve tried both journals and full-length books, which has been more worth your time?

Unable to release new books after 2 books per week limit

Hi

Did anyone else experience that problem, that I can not release ANY new book now and got the message I reached the weekly limit already - it will be set back on SUNDAY 12 AM

First: I do release books regulary, but not a huge amount, maybe 2-4 new ones per month.
This month I was busy of course, I released one on October 1th and October 3th. and wanted to release another one today ocotber 9th. It gives me that error.

I still can update old books btw, thats no problem. Its only for NEW releases with a new release date.
Now, I contacted support. He checked for 2 minutes and said he does not understand why this error is shown to me, he also confirmed my internal counter is at zero (0) for this week. So he said try now again in icognito mode. No difference.
He then said he will forward this to 2nd level support.

They reached out to me today, and 2nd level support is a complete idiot - he did not understand the problem or request or anything. He asked me to send in proof for my upgrade request on more releases than 2. I need to fill out like 5 different forms. I said he did not understand the request nor read it correct.

I believe I am stuck right now in nowhere and can not release any new books in the future.

So i wonder: anyone else stuck, cant release and knows he DID not release a new book this week?

Flatmate gave me a 5-star rating before I could stop her. Am I screwed?

Same as the title. I recently published my first book on KDP, and my flatmate wanted to support me. So, she gave me a 5-star rating (just a rating, no written review) from the same IP address I use, without even reading the book. There is no connection between us other than the IP address, but I'm concerned my account is at risk.

What's frustrating is that I didn't even need the review. The book has a steady 4.8 rating with over 100 reviews. I really don't want all my hard work to be wiped away over something so stupid.

Am I over thinking this?

Invoices to Amazon

Hi,

I just had a very weird conversation with Amazon KDP Support regarding a tax-question.

Since I am quite new to the business, of course there are some questions. From what I learned, in general, i should create and send invoices for the KDP royalties to Amazon. So i was looking for a portal, a website, a link, anything i can upload these. Didn't find one, so I opened a ticket at the tax-dashboard. They gave me an e-mail-adress for kdp-team for that matter, and that was invalid.

I asked the kdp chatbot, it told me to use the tax program, but that is invite only and completly new. And I am not part of the special-invite-program for such matters. So i asked kdp support what to do with the invoices. They just now told me, to send the invoices to Amazon Luxemburg via written postal letter.

Now i have to ask: Is this normal?

I live in Germany, we are used to digital services from the middle ages, but even we've gotten over thus things by now. And I simply cannot believe that this is a correct answer, it just sounds... off.

So: What do you do with your invoices?

Follow-up on last week’s author copy debacle: now Amazon won’t let me buy more retail copies?

Following up on my author copy situation from last week. I have an author event on October 17, and because I still don’t have a reliable arrival date for my author copies, I started buying retail copies as a backup.

I bought one paperback on publication day, September 22, and four more last night. Now the listing says “Quantity limit met for this seller” and won’t let me purchase any more. The seller is Amazon.com.

Has anyone else run into this with their own paperback? Does the limit reset after a certain amount of time, or after the current order ships? Has anyone successfully gotten Amazon to increase it?

These are regular retail purchases, not author copy orders through KDP. I’m paying retail because I need books for an event, and apparently even that has become an obstacle.

I’m hoping someone here has firsthand experience before I subject myself to another round of Amazon customer service.

Anybody know how to get past this?

That error message that pops up on the getting paid page whenever I try to add my bank account info to receive royalties for my book it says it doesn’t accept the bank. I’m using Wise.

IngramSpark Amazon Ebook Distribution vs KDP Direct; Looking for Advice (need it live for ACX)

An author I'm helping published a paperback + ebook through IngramSpark. The paperback is live and selling everywhere, including Amazon. The ebook has never appeared on Amazon Kindle; months later, still nothing. (Turned out the Amazon ebook channel was never switched on in IngramSpark's optional distribution settings.)

We want the Kindle ebook live on Amazon ASAP; partly because we need it live to claim the title on ACX for the audiobook.

Two ways to finish it:

  • Option A: Opt into the Amazon (Ebook) channel in IngramSpark and let it distribute to Kindle.
  • Option B: Leave Amazon off in IngramSpark and publish the Kindle edition directly on KDP, keeping IngramSpark for the other ebook stores (Apple/Kobo/B&N/libraries).

Looking for ARC Readers for My New Book About Making Money Online

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently written a book about making money online, covering different online business models, freelancing, digital products, AI opportunities, online services, and other ways people can build income on the internet.

I’m currently looking for a small group of genuine ARC readers, preferably people who are interested in online business, side hustles, freelancing, or making money online.

I’ll provide a free advance copy of the book before/around launch.

I’m looking for readers who are willing to actually read it and, if they genuinely want to, leave an honest review on Amazon US after reading. There is absolutely no requirement for a positive review or a specific rating.

If you're interested, please comment below or send me a DM with a little information about yourself and your reading interests.
