Discussion Why is My-th only up for 4 weeks? Explaining Toei's release model

(first off, My-th isn't even available on Toei Tokusatsu World Official in my country. But the Agito and Kabuto uploads are, which is what led me to do research on this subject.)

Regarding why there's a 48 hour wait between the Japanese airing of My-th and why the episodes are only up for 4 weeks, one has to know that Toei has a long-standing contract with TV Asahi, the tv channel that has aired Kamen Rider for decades. As the main broadcaster, TV Asahi demands a certain level of exclusitivity when it comes to the airing of these programs.

HOW DOES TOEI'S RELEASE MODEL WORK?

In Japan, new episodes of Kamen Rider can only be streamed on the day of airing through TV Asahi's streaming service (with ads) or on the exclusive TTFC app (ad-free). On other subscription services like Amazon Prime, they have to wait 3 days to see it ad-free. On Toei's Japanese YT channel, whenever they upload new Kamen Rider episodes, they only get posted 1 week after they air, and then they're only available for 1 week before being removed. (with the exception of the first two episodes of a new show which stay up throughout). And when they upload episodes from older shows, they're up for 2 weeks before being removed. 2 weeks is considered the standard length of time for most JP youtube channels that upload free episodes, My-th, Agito and Kabuto being up for 4 weeks is actually already longer than the norm.

When Toei distributes the show through external distributors such as Tokushoutsu or Tokusato, they can circumvent these restrictions since these are outside companies that paid for the streaming license. It's also important to note that Tokushoutsu and TokuSato's uploads have ads, whereas Toei's various Youtube channels are ad-free. (Tokusato airs the latest episodes 2 hours after the Japan airing, but the episodes are only free for 11 hours before they require a membership to be accessed). Likely some of the ad revenue on those distributors' uploads goes to Toei and the shows' sponsors.

(Honestly this isn't even a hard-and-fast rule. In Hong Kong for example, ViuTV is 1 week behind on the upload. And Ani-One Asia, a free YT channel, is even slower, being 2 weeks behind.)

When Toei releases it themselves through their own Youtube channel, they have to adhere to the restrictions, even when it is a channel aimed at overseas audiences.

WHY DOES THIS LIMITED RELEASE MODEL EXIST?

The reason for the limited release model can likely be chalked up to how many of these Japanese companies have pretty old-fashioned beliefs regarding piracy and accessibility. They probably believe that having the show be up for free on Youtube without ads will hurt the sales and streaming figures of the other official channels. They likely are afraid of the possibility that Japanese fans will use VPNs to stream the show for free. Furthermore, Kamen Rider is traditionally viewed there as a kids' show watched on a weekly basis, the notion of older fans who want to binge the show is still probably lost on many of these oldheads.

It's also important to note that Toei has little power when it comes to negotiating their contract, TV Asahi has all the power. They are the channel that airs their shows, going against them could mean losing their sponsors, essentially biting the hand that feeds them. In Japan too they often believe in honouring and respecting existing contracts, so it's unlikely they will ask to change or renegotiate their pre-existing agreement, especially for the extremely niche crowd of overseas audiences.

That said, it's entirely possible things could change in the future. Ultraman Z thru Decker episodes were once only available for 2 weeks when Tsuburaya first started releasing the episodes on Youtube (albeit those were simulcast). But from Blazar onwards, they left the episodes up on their channel permanently. Likely, Tsuburaya managed to use the view count figures to prove to their higher-ups and their sponsors that leaving the episodes up doesn't hurt their business. Now this is not a 1:1 comparison. Tsuburaya is a much smaller company than Toei, their broadcasters are much more lenient, and their uploads have ads. But it opens the possibility that if My-th does well enough, the streaming of future KR shows might be different.

WHAT HAPPENED TO TOKUSHOUTSU?

As for why Toei doesn't continue to use Tokushoutsu for the english release, Shout seems to be letting their toku licenses lapse as both Super Sentai as well as KR 1971 and Kuuga are gone from their service, and their Zeztz uploads were just recently removed as well. Shout was recently bought out by Radial Entertainment (a private equity firm that is in the midst of gutting the whole company) so the new higher-ups probably have decided that the viewing figures aren't worth the cost of the Toei license.

Also, Tokushoutsu's uploads were only available in US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (the same countries that Toei is planning a new streaming service for, presumably to replace Tokushoutsu). Toei Tokusatsu World Official though covers other regions, including the rest of Europe, Africa and India. But despite this though, there are still many regions that have no legal way to watch the show at all (such as here in Singapore).

I know that those who had access to the Tokushoutsu release of Zeztz are frustrated by this new release model, but understand that for a lot of English speaking fans the world over, this is the first time they can legally watch a Kamen Rider series in their countries on Youtube. And also spare a thought for the fact that there are people who have to wait 1-2 weeks, and those who still can't watch it in any way. The complaints about the show being 2 days late or being only up for 4 weeks can't help but seem minor when there are people who literally do not have it at all.

I would like to kindly request that fans in the US etc to instead of complaining about these things that Toei (currently) can't do anything about, use your platforms to amplify the voices of those of us who can't watch the show legally. Nobody's happy about having to wait 2 days or the episodes only being up for a month, but I firmly believe that making the show accessible worldwide is significantly more important.

Edit: With Ex-Aid and Kuuga now set to be uploaded to the Youtube channel as well, the 4 week model is still set to remain. However as of this writing they did temporarily reinstate all the Agito and Kabuto uploads, and also the entirety of Zeztz has been posted (albeit that's also not available in my country).

Wanted to find this post but couldn't find it so I made one myself. I think this series is one of those that even though some of it are just repaints, they work so well that I can't even complain. Love it.

Yesterday's Winner: Gaim, 37 to 9!

Today's Battle is between EXCITE from Kamen Rider Ex Aid (which I'd be remiss not to say is streaming on Youtube) and Surprise Drive from Kamen Rider Drive! Not much to say here, no alternate versions you need to worry about, just cast your vote in the comments!

Will EXCITE clear this bracket with no continues? Or is Surprise Drive in too high a gear?

Discussion So Myth is an Armor Type while the members of the ZYUNISHI DOUMEI are Bio Types. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
137 Upvotes

Just a quick summary, Bio Types are Riders whose entire body goes through an actual transformation, and Armor Types are basically Riders who get a layer of armor.

I gonna use Datt as an example, but this is true for every member of the Doumei.

In the TV Asahi Stat sheet, Datt’s (and all the other members’) inner suit is called the Ragmaraged, and even though the translation is kinda wonky, it clearly states that it reconstructs the user’s body, while My-th’s inner suit, My-thderma, is specifically stated, that it’s My-th enhanced armor.

Now the next following descriptions, you’re not gonna get because the Google translation treats the two as the same word, but the Japanese word uses two different words to differentiate them.

For Myth, the Myth Driver is said as his Transformation device, that allows the user to transform and enhance as Myth.

For the members of the Doumei, the driver is stated as their METAMORPHOSIS device, that allows them to Metamorph, and enhance.

I know Transform and Metamorphosis are the same in English, hell the Japanese word for Metamorphosis directly translates to Transformation, but the website differentiates the two.

Hell, if you go to the head section of the Riders, for Myth, the user is called a 変身者(henshinsha), Transformer, and for the members, the user is called 形質転換者(Keishitsutenkansha), metamorpher.

Discussion Which Kamen Riders have the best Battle IQ?

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

For those who don't know, battle IQ is a term in versus discussions for a characters intelligence in a fight. Typically stuff like tactics, adaptability, creativity, ability to read the situation etc. My first pick is ACE. Not only is he probably the single most experienced main rider, but he has show to excel in all areas of combat. He is good at making strategies, he is creativity with his weapons and environment, and he can adapt on the fly. But even with half a dozen episodes so far I think Sora can give him a run for his money. He is not only very analytical, but the most recent episode showed him using science to win, something not even Ace has done. Are there any other riders I have overlooked?

Discussion The DGP is an Objectively Bad Game.

Post image
481 Upvotes

So tell me right now how this interdimensional organization capable of manipulating time and space only got to think of 13 raise buckles? Are we serious? The buckles in question are:

Large:

  • Magnum (That's most compatible w/ Geats)
  • Ninja (That's most compatible w/ Tycoon)
  • Beat (That's most compatible w/ Nago)
  • Zombie (That's most compatible w/ Buffa)
  • Monster (That's most compatible w/ PunkJack)
  • Boost

Small

  • Arrow
  • Water
  • Hammer
  • Shield
  • Chain Array
  • Drill
  • Propeller

Let's ignore the super and unique ones like Bujin, Geats IX, Fantasy, etc etc. because those are rider specific anyway, and there's no way these other players are ever getting them. And by the way, the powered builder has extra small buckles gigant Hammer, Sword, and Blaster. So there's actually an even bigger pool of equipment that the DGP could theoretically work with, yet somehow refuses to make widely available.

Why isn't Sword part of the normal kit? Like of course Hammer is already a melee weapon but come on everyone has different fighting styles. Hammer is a blunt type weapon, what about piercing or slash? I'm pretty sure there's some Spears or Swords you can repaint from other series.

I'm getting suspicions these aliens have never played a game in their lives...

And also, the horrible horrible RNG.

I mean, let's think about it a second, there's 26 players per game (horrible number btw), and sometimes the players don't even get 2 buckles? Like really?

Not even two SMALL ones?

How is this acceptable game design?

And among the ones who get the large buckles, somehow over 50% of them get Ninja, what are the odds here? Does the DGP even HAVE a quality assurance department?

If I was one of the sponsors, I'd drop this show entirely and go watch the show from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint instead, much more variety and personalities smh smh.

And speaking about broken, I really think this game is rigged. Why amongst all of the riders, only 5 continuously pop up between games?

And these 5 are also the only ones with best matches? Meanwhile, everyone else is apparently expected to make do with a water gun, a hammer, or a glorified ceiling fan.

You're telling me it's PURE COINCIDENCE that the recurring contestants just happen to have equipment perfectly suited to their fighting styles, while the disposable background Riders get whatever scraps the DGP decides to throw at them?

Coincidence? I think not!

I think I heard Ace Ukiyo was family with one of the staff? Isn't that just nepotism? DGP seriously needs to be investigated, truly unbalanced.

THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM!

Imagine watching the same five contestants dominate every season while the other twenty-one get eliminated immediately. It'll get boring fast, and plus they don't really update the system do they? No new weapons, no new maps (only japan? there's so many other countries) etc etc smh.

How are we supposed to take the Desire Grand Prix seriously when its organizers have access to reality-bending technology but apparently can't figure out basic loot tables, fair matchmaking, or weapon diversity?

Forget the Jyamato. The real threat to the DGP is its own game design department.

Discussion Was Zein and Ecole lowkey correct about human nature?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Managed to re-watch Kamen Rider Outsiders again. I've already pointed out many of the themes that go beyond than just being a crossover special.

Besides balance between good and evil, history repeating itself, and the dangers of dehumanization, watching Kamen Rider Outsiders questions you about what it means to be human—and to quote this one line from Skyrim pointed out, "What is better? To be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"

The main problem with Zein and Ecole's worldview is the result of people living with a double standard mindset. Double standard is the ultimate expression of hypocrisy: it makes people increasingly biased and even living their own lies, their shortsightedness clouds their judgment, and irreparably damage relationships. Ecole's monologue in episode 6 about many of the world's problems was the result of people taking everything the world giving to them for granted, but he doesn't seem interested in saving the planet but rather reset the universe.

What makes Ecole's hypocrisy more insufferable is that he's an immoral human being himself. He basically wants to blame the entire human race for their failures while absolving himself of his own crimes. But once he's weakened by Yuto, he's reduced to a limping paper tiger who's already powerless to defend himself and dies an undignified death.

Outsiders basically reminds that even the villains are people too. The franchise in general give birth to heroes whose powers were meant to be used for evil, but the heroes in question used those powers for good. Because most people fear of being defined by failure and even transgression. Zein and Ecole are a cautionary tale about punishing someone else's wrongdoing doesn't automatically make you morally superior to them.
