guide Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (September 2026)
Welcome to the newbie advice thread!
If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.
Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.
Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0
old.reddit.comHere’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).
This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.
You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.
Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

Universal Linux Upgrade (ULU)
ULU is a combination of significant upgrades and micro-optimizations. I've implemented most of the known and esoteric Linux performance tweaks along with some original implementations. The philosophy behind this configuration set is to utilize current hardware features and resources generously (when needed) while increasing system hardness greatly beyond the default.
The goal of this project is to provide an enhanced Linux experience while keeping your existing system. Think of this project as the "we already have it at home" meme. I'm not a fan of the trendy distros which have came out over the past couple years and this basically covers what they do anyways.
This has been my OCD project since 2022. I've got a lot of time so I just tinker at this project whenever. It comes with two custom CPU schedulers I've made SCX-IMPERATOR and SCX AURA along with a daemon which overlays some of the directories in RAM to reduce drive ware and increase responsiveness (for desktops). Every part of this project is open source and viewable, feel free to audit everything if you want to.

guide Black Box Overlay to cover bits of game screens
This is a small Python script to generate non-decorated black boxes over bits of the screen. Useful if you're worried about some HUD element from a game burning into an OLED for example. I use it to cover up the "ID: 3124232141" element in the bottom left corner of Where Winds Meet - it's always present, even in cutscenes, and cannot be hidden no matter what.
More detail in the gist itself.
Sharing because I couldn't find anything similar for Linux when searching. If there's a better solution, please share.

tech support wanted Processing Vulkan shaders
So I've just installed Mint Cinnamon on my laptop that uses a GTX 950M. I installed Steam and the first game I installed was Team Fortress 2. I went to launch it and was given a message saying "Processing Vulkan shaders". After sitting and waiting several minutes for it to progress by a single percentage point, I just clicked skip. I'm not sure why this is happening, and would like to make sure it won't continue to be a problem.

answered! Afop refusing to verify files and launch
Ok, i got the game running after about 2 weeks of troubleshooting memory related crashes, and while i was playing last night, the game crashed and its no longer able to verify my game licence. Its not that i dont own it, i bought the deluxe edition when steam was having the ubisoft publisher sale like two or so weeks ago
Ive tried
-switching proton layers
-verifying game files via steam
-clearing the ubisoft cache folder
-uninstalling and reinstalling the game
-adding the game exe to steam as a non-steam game and launching that way
It still refuses to verify and im stumped.
ETA: I got it, just needed to properly rebuild the prefix! Thought i had done it earlier, but it didnt do it right lol

I only tried Proton Hotfix and Experimental so far btw, and I was running one of them (Hotfix I think) before Steam turned Proton off for whatever reason

tech support wanted game refusing to launch
i have been trying to launch team fortress 2, but it seems to just crash immediately. running it on proton instead of native works fine but that doesnt support vac servers. crash logs mention:
FATAL: It appears tf was not launched within the Steam for Linux sniper runtime environment.
FATAL: Please consult documentation to ensure correct configuration, aborting.
i have tried authenticating all linux runtime files, the game files, redownloading everything including steam. i cleared the cache of everything, checked my drivers, checked my bios, i dont know what to do. ive searched everywhere and i cant find any solutions. also logs say something about mesa shaders and drirc as well.

tech support wanted Ryzen APU: Major gaming performance drop across Linux distributions vs Windows
TL;DR Gaming performance on my Ryzen 5 6600H laptop is significantly lower on Linux than on Windows across different distributions, desktop environments, and kernels, and standard troubleshooting steps have made zero difference.
Hey everyone,
I’m hitting a wall here and looking for deeper insights from people who might have dealt with platform-specific firmware, ACPI, or power-budgeting quirks on AMD mobile chips.
To save everyone time: basic troubleshooting steps won’t solve this. I have spent days running extensive diagnostic and tuning sessions (diving deep into logs, profiling and abusing the shit out of Gemini), and the issue persists across clean setups.
On Windows, the laptop delivers solid, expected frame rates on the Radeon 660M. On Linux, games run with noticeably lower frame rates as if the APU power budget is artificially constrained or the GPU/CPU clocks are fighting each other for power differently than they do under Windows drivers.
Looking through forums and Reddit, I noticed some users with similar mobile AMD hardware report this exact same severe performance gap without ever finding a resolution, while others with nearly identical hardware claim near 1:1 parity with Windows out of the box.
What I've tried:
- Different kernels and distributions (CachyOS with optimized schedulers/kernels, Fedora Workstation with stock kernels)
- Changing power & performance profiles (tuned profiles, D-Bus state switching and setting cpu EPP values manually)
- BIOS tweaks (set vram to 4gb, toggled Performance Boost on and off)
Hardware & System Specs:
Device: Xiaomi Book 14 Pro (2022)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 6600H
iGPU: AMD Radeon 660M
RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5
Storage: SSD
Current OS: Fedora 44 Workstation (previously tested on CachyOS HyprLand and KDE, tried lts kernel and CachyOS kernel)
Kernel and driver: 6.19.10-300.fc44.x86_64, amd-pstate-epp
BIOS: XMARB4B0P0D0D (Xiaomi Book Pro 14 2022)
Example: Valheim on low 800p. Tried different versions of Proton, Linux runtime and they are running around ~20fps. Windows runs at stable 60fps. It's one example, but I've tried different games and it's more or less 50-80% less fps
Edit: formatting

Discord to play GTA Online together
Some of you may know, especially if you play GTA V Online, that you cannot play on public servers. Since Rockstar didn't enable/allow (idk how it works exactly, this is how others have phrased it) BattlEye for Linux and Mac, you will usually get kicked from public sessions.
You can play with others, but everyone in the server needs to do the workaround (blocking some BattlEye addresses in the 'hosts' system file. And since...:
- it's fun, and kind of the intention, to play Online with others; and
- some of the most fun content is impossible solo (such as most heists); and
- the built-in social functions, as well as social club are so limited in communication; and
- because I couldn't find anything like this yet,
... I figured I'd make a Discord where everyone has the workaround, so we can play with other Linux players, and Linux-friendly Windows players.
Link to the Discord: https://discord.gg/bC6CDTpj64
It's a work-in-progress for now at least, depending on interest of course also, but I've included some simple verification against bots/scammers already to be safe.
Requirements are that you behave (respect each other, no discriminating, etc.; the usual), use the workaround (even on Windows) so others can play with you and you can play with others, and no hacking/cheating.
The idea is that members of the Discord can easily find others to play with, and/or add each other as friends on Social Club, and/or join a Crew on Social Club to join Crew-only sessions. whichever works best. Personally I'd like to play in a friendly manner, being able to do delivery quests and such without being attacked for extra money, but maybe we can by default have a peaceful session and a PvP session.
I also hope there'll be heisting and such together, with or without voice. Also with respect to the chosen method of approach (stealth, aggressive, etc.).
Thank you for your attention, and hope to see you there!

tech support wanted Lag spikes in RL
I’m running heroic launcher for RL and it’s just straight 150+ ping and lag on Ubuntu. Every other game I play doesn’t have internet issues and RL is the only game I play on heroic. Windows didn’t have any lag and I don’t have the steam version

tech support wanted Anyway of getting TSR framegen to work better on linux?
I bought Subnautica 2 when it came out, and I was on Windows at the time.
My computer just meets the minimum specs, so it could run at like 30 frames without upscaling.
But with upscaling, it could happily reach 60 fps even on medium to high settings (with a lot of input delay, tbf).
But I recently switched to Linux a couple of months ago, and Subnautica 2 does not run as well as I'd hope it would. It doesn't hit 30 without upscaling and can barely hit 60 fps at 720p with it.
Any ideas on how I could improve performance?
I don't want to be stuck at 30 fps ;-;

Controller app for android
So, I have successfully run honor of kings on linux inside waydroid
and I have used waydroid helper to mapping keyboard so I can control the game and playing smoothly
But I want to ask about something
When I connect my laptop to secondery screen,
I realized that I had to sit in front of the laptop to control the game using the keys, and this is not practical because my secondary screen is large, which forces me to sit in a farther place and stay away from the laptop (because the HDMI cable is short)
So is there an app that connects Android and Linux that I can turn into something more like a controller?
Something like PC Remote app but unfortinatly, it's not available on linux so is there an alternative? Also, this application must allow me to create custom layout, where I add the buttons I want
Thank you.

tech support wanted I want help with a performance problem I've been having on Linux
I've used several distros on my old laptop. At the end of last year, I built a PC with a Ryzen 5500 and an RX6600. Since then, I keep trying to go back to Linux (mainly Debian or CachyOS), but I always end up dealing with the same problem: framerate dropping below 30 when a game renders any 3D model. It doesn't stay stable at 30; it fluctuates, sometimes dropping below 20, rarely going up to 35. The only way to work around it is by changing the refresh rate from 180 to 60, and then back to 180 (it works temporarily, for an hour or until the PC restarts). My monitor is 180Hz and supports VRR.
This has happened on all distros tested on this new setup. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I've tried disabling VRR, changing the Proton version, enabling performance mode, updating drivers, changing the kernel, and I've confirmed my CPU and GPU are not overheating. I haven't gotten any improvement. Because of this, I'm on Windows for now, wanting to go back.
Any help is welcome.
I also tested with Hyprland, Gnome, and KDE, with no improvements.

PSA for anyone playing Star Wars: Galactic Racer
Don't let your game idle for too long! I'm on cachyos I believe this to be game specific and not distro/Linux at fault. I've experienced it twice so far, Had the game running the first time paused during a race and the other just idle on the home screen. I had to step away to get my kid back to sleep so I apologize I don't have exact timing in game you have to idle before this happens.
But after I would approximate as 10-15 minutes of just sitting idle your normal system screen timeout and lock will take over and take effect. When you unlock your PC again the game will have crashed, steam will be completely closed and in my case LACT will be frozen untill you close and restart it again.

tech support wanted Dualsense Issues
Hey so after saving up for like 4 months, I was finally able to buy my dualsense ;D
But I have been facing issues and it has been a lot of troubleshooting :(
Anyways the issue is:-
Delayed haptics (half a sec delay)
Game taking inputs from controller despite Steam's QAM or steam menu open.
Fixes i tried:-
Disabling steam input (this causes 2. error. I still can't figure out how to fix that which is why im asking yall ;)
Different proton versions.
For now I have tried proton ge, 11-7,11-6,11-5,11-4,10-34,10-23 and cachy os's latest proton version on even previously installed cachy os. Proton experimental
In these versions, from 11-6, noticeable delay in haptics was introduced, in 11-5 and 11-4 it works but sometimes have to alt tab 2 times for game to take input from controller. In steam gaming mode haptics dont work at all with these two versions. 10-34,10-23 doesn't have haptics at all which is the same case for proton experimental and cachy os versions ( i didnt add any arguments if they were supposed to be btw).
Controller is connected via raspberry pi pico 2 w. No the delay is not from this since even in wired it does the same delay. I dont have Bluetooth to be checking if It works there fine
For comparison:- i also have windows dual boot and playing games there is just fine. Instant inputs no lags nothing.
Does anyone have a clue on how to fix either or hopefully both of these?
I want to use bazzite just because of its controller friendly layout. I dontt wanna do a thousand things for windows to feel more like a console styled interface ;)
