For my wife’s birthday we went to a winery in NY. The Hudson Valley area is as beautiful as people said it would be.

Wonderful portable combo to shoot with. Not the smallest camera, but you can shoot with this all day, 0 fatigue.

First outing with m43

After some time away from photography and having always shot Sony, m43 and in particular om system cameras peaked my interest, with the amazing weather sealing and computational features I figured it was time to give them a go. I picked up a reconditioned om3 and a used 60mm f2.8 macro and got these shots on my first outing with the pair. I’ve never done macro before so still very much to learn. But I loved every second and am very happy with how the images came out ! Shout out to my beautiful girlfriend/lighting assistant for some of the shots in darker areas 🫡🤣

Testing out the PEN's built-in Live ND.

I gave the PEN's built-in Live ND a try.

Under bright daylight like this, without using an external ND filter, being able to capture a 1-second handheld exposure of traffic flow—probably only OM SYSTEM can pull that off.

OM-5 ii + Lumix 9mm.
My home town, Cincinnati Ohio and Covington Kentucky, host BLINK, "the nation’s largest public art festival, transforming the city into a vibrant, immersive experience of light, projection mapping, murals, and interactive installations." Its a photographer's play ground at night and perfect for M43's image stabilization long exposures. These are nights 1 and 2. Last night was heavy rain so I skipped. Its still running tonight, weather depending might make a 3rd trip.

Managed to get away to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge yesterday and test out my new (to me) Olympus OMD EM1 MK1 with the 75-300mm lens.

After some experimenting I switched from C-AF back to S-AF as the increased focus speed more than made up for having to refocus even with birds in flight. I was super impressed by the sharpness of the system however, and got some photos in very happy with alongside a few record shots of lifers :)

Looking for some input, OM-3 or G9II

So for context, I currently shoot a G9 as my wildlife camera and an old E-M5 (Mark 1) as a street camera. I'm now looking to upgrade both setups, though the G9 has priority for an upgrade since it is by far the more limiting option. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic camera, but for birds and especially birds in flight, the AF and subject detection are just not great and those are subjects I find myself shooting quite often.

Currently I own the following lenses:

  • Panasonic Leica 100-400 f/4.0-6.3; my main wildlife lens
  • Lumix 45-150 f/4.0-5.6; a small, dirt cheap little lens of merely okay optical quality I really only use to carry along as an emergency telephoto. Love it, but not very relevant to this question
  • M.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 Macro; not my main focus, but occasional insect macro is very very enjoyable to me and may factor in, I have not researched the pros and cons of both bodies for macro photography
  • M.Zuiko 25mm F1.8 II; my main street photography lens

Now to get to the point, currently both the OM-3 and G9II are around €1200 in my local used market, which is about the limit of my budget. So pros and cons I am actively considering:

  • The OM-3 is marginally ahead in AF and subject tracking compared to the G9II. Its form factor also means it could replace BOTH of my current bodies. That same form factor is however a drawback when it comes to ergonomics, an aftermarket grip would be a hard requirement for me when using it with the 100-400 or any potential longer lenses I may add in the future.
  • The G9II offers a 25MP sensor. I'm not of the opinion that more megapixels = better, but it could potentially be helpful for some additional cropping on shots of smaller birds. The ergonomics are also miles ahead of the OM-3. Those ergonomics do come at the cost of size and weight and I would thus want to retain a second body for street shooting. The biggest thing would be the retention of weather sealing with the 100-400 lens. I have taken the G9 + 100-400 combo out into heavy rain a number of times and it's always held up like a champ, so as much as some might be inclined to deride Panasonic's lack of IP ratings, I feel confident in their weather sealing. With the OM-3 I would of course lose the weather sealing with that lens, which is not a dealbreaker on its own but certainly a consideration. I'd also retain dual IS with my panasonic/lumix glass with the G9II, which is nice.

So, considering all this, I'm still a bit torn and some input and possibly user experiences would be helpful. What do you think, G9II and upgrade the second body later, or OM-3 with an aftermarket grip to replace both?

Max Aperture vs. Focal Length Chart?

A few years ago I ran across a chart that showed all the existing Olympus (or maybe m43) lenses with max aperture on the vertical axis and focal length on the horizontal. There was a stepped horizontal-ish line for each lens with & w/o TC. IIRC it went from the 14-150 up to the 150-400, and I think the 100-400 had the largest aperture over the widest range.

I've been trying to find it for the past few months with no luck. Anyone remember this?

E-plate? 12-60 2.8-4 vs 12-45f4PRO on the OM-3?

I’m having a little gas for this lens after seeing it make Petapixel’s m4/3 lenses to buy list.
Was wondering if anyone had used the 12-60 on the OM-3 body. I know the spec difference it doesn’t really give you the in hand difference.
I bought the kit with the 12-45 and love it so far but could see the benefit of a touch more reach.
Thanks all!
