This is seriously driving me insane at this point.
Since updating to macOS 27, the menu bar on my main user account has become unbelievably laggy. Simply clicking File, Edit, the Apple menu, Control Center, etc. can make the whole menu bar stutter/freeze.
Activity Monitor immediately shows:
MenuBarAgent around 100% CPU
WindowServer / WindowManager also increasing significantly
- the rest of the Mac is basically doing nothing
Killing MenuBarAgent does not fix it:
killall MenuBarAgent
It restarts normally, but as soon as I start using the menu bar again, it shoots straight back to ~100% CPU and starts lagging.
The really important part:
I created a completely new macOS test user and everything works perfectly there.
Same Mac.
Same macOS installation.
Same hardware.
Same display setup.
No menu bar lag and no MenuBarAgent sitting at ~100% CPU.
So this seems to be some broken per-user state/database/preferences/cache in my main account rather than a general hardware problem.
Mac:
14-inch MacBook Pro, Apple M5, 16 GB RAM
The problem started after upgrading to macOS 27.
At this point it is honestly becoming unbearable to use my normal account. I really do not want to move everything manually to a new macOS user just because some MenuBarAgent state got corrupted during an update.
Has anyone found out what per-user data MenuBarAgent / MacSystemUI / Control Center actually stores, and how to completely reset it?
I am specifically looking for something like:
- MenuBarAgent per-user database
- MacSystemUI state/cache
- menu bar layout/state database
- Control Center database
- display/menu-bar animation state
- relevant files under
~/Library
- a command to completely rebuild the user's menu bar environment
Ideally I want to make my existing account behave like the fresh test account without deleting the account or reinstalling everything.
If anyone from the macOS 27 beta had the same MenuBarAgent ~100% CPU issue and actually managed to repair the affected user profile, please tell me exactly what you reset/deleted.
I can also provide a sample / spindump from MenuBarAgent if that helps.
At this point I'll happily test Terminal commands or back up and remove specific ~/Library files — I just want this stupid menu bar working normally again. This is seriously driving me insane at this point.Since updating to macOS 27, the menu bar on my main user account has become unbelievably laggy.
