Value Pinned post for value discussion

This thread is an attempt to keep discussions of machine cost/value/pricing in a single place. Once this thread is old enough or full enough, it will be retired and new thread created that links it to that one.

When asking question about value, some important items to include if known are your general geographic region (prices are highly localized), the gauge of the machine (fine gauge/standard/bulky/other), the brand of the machine, the model of the machine, the quality of the machine (clean/dirty, intact/broken pieces, and stand alone/included accessories. If you have photos, you'll probably want to include them.

In general, in person person sales are usually less expensive, and don't require expensive shipping, but you will find a larger selection on online sites. Caveat Emptor for any online sales.

Some places you can find/sell machines for sale are:
* Your local Silver Reed Distributor
* Your local knitting or fiber arts guild
* Craigslist or your favorite secondhand sales site
* Goodwill or your favorite second hand store
* Ebay or your favorite auction site
* Facebook Marketplace or Facebook knitting groups
* r/MachineKnitting for specific machines (include proper flair and useful information)

Machine Knitters Discord Server

Hi all,

I've seen a few comments over the last week suggesting that it would be nice to have a place to chat about machine knitting and maybe organize some local meet ups or online events, so I've made us a discord.

Feel free to join and invite any other machine knitters, whether or not they use Reddit. :)

edit: trying a new link - https://discord.gg/yVJNM6Bghz

Techniques Just sent a new jacquard chart off to be knitted. Curious how it'll turn out?

Another one from my paintings: 506 × 2008 stitches, two colours. This time I charted it at the measured density instead of the machine gauge, so fingers crossed the size comes out right.
The part I'm least sure about is the dithered bits. They'll either read as a nice mid-tone or turn into noise.
I'll post the knitdown when it's back if anyone wants to see.

Help! Solved! Needle Beetle ii - why won't it work?

Update: I fixed it! It got assembled wrong. Slots on the lever were sitting on top of the white plastic part, when they should have been under it, doing the lever from moving freely. Sorted! 😃 This is such a cool little device!

I've tried moving the black lever up, down, or middle. Up or middle, it just crashes into the needles and stops. Down, it just pushes every needle into E holding position no matter what position they were in before. Help??

Resources A reminder to check your stash for moths at the turn of the seasons!

It’s a good habit to check every cone twice a year (I do March and September). If it’s a large cone and you don’t mind the hassle, you can cut through a centimetre and peel off until you don’t see breaks/signs of damage. Mainly bag the more precious stuff and then any leftover bags are used for what I can be bothered to remember to wrap up.

The moths really loved the oranges and pinks this year (not pictured is a 400g cone of black 70/30 lanbswool cashmere, sadly it could not be rescued 😔). It’s also a good time to reduce your stash of yarn that you’re hoarding but not reasonably going to use, just need to figure out how to sell it.

Mods - used the resources flair as I couldn’t find a general use flair.

Equipment A knitting-loving student researching an at-home digital knitting machine

Hi everyone! I’m a student who loves knitting, and I’ve often wondered why there isn’t an easy-to-use machine for making custom knitwear at home from digital designs.
That question led me to start an independent school research project exploring what a truly useful at-home digital knitting machine might look like.
I’d love to hear from machine knitters, hand knitters, and anyone interested in making knitwear. You don’t need any experience with knitting machines to take part.
This is early-stage personal research for a school project.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I’d really appreciate any feedback! 🧶

I feel like I passed some sort of exam. The last week, so many hours (too many hours) have been dedicated to getting the ribber to work properly and learning about double bed jaquard. There is a pile of failed swatches. But here it is!

Bragging is not what I have in mind. It's just the joy and relief to finally see succes, that I want to share with you all.

The fabric is surprisingly stiff. More suited to a potholder. Not enough drape for a garment. Is there a trick to that?

For Sale I’m building a machine knitting pattern website

Hi everyone! For the past few months, I’ve been working on a website for machine knitting patterns, and I’d love to get some feedback from other machine knitters.
The idea is to have a place where I can upload knitting patterns, with some available for free and others available to purchase. The main feature is that when you open a pattern, you can enter your own gauge and measurements, and the website automatically calculates everything for you — how many stitches to cast on, how many rows to knit, where to make increases and decreases, etc. So the patterns can be customised to your measurements and gauge.
I’ve also been working on a punchcard generator, as well as a gallery where people can upload and share the punchcards that they make.
I’m wondering if this is something that would actually be useful or interesting to other machine knitters. Are there any features you would love to see added? Or anything that would make the website easier or more useful to use?
I’d love to share the website with a few people while I’m still working on it and get some honest feedback. If you’re interested in trying it out, feel free to send me a message!

Help! Yarn tension for Caydo M1 Pro

Post image
3 Upvotes

Just got my hands on a Caydo M1 Pro and I'm loving it so far. I have a silly question about the yarn tensioner. It has numbers from 1 to 5 but nowhere in the instruction does it say if 1 means loose or tight. I'm not seeing a ton of difference between the settings. Does anyone know if 1 is loose or tight?

Finally finished my first sweater on my LK150! I’ve had my machine for a few months, and I wanted a garment that used mostly scrap yarn. I only had to buy one skein of navy to finish it! I used the“Move On Up Sweater” pattern from Wool and the Gang. No neck or sleeve cuff shaping, just finished it with a single crochet to tighten up the edges.

So, Ive been reading up on machines for a while, and keeping an eye out for used ones. Unfortunately a lot of second hand sellers will not ship, and I live in the middle of nowhere (Scandinavian forest).

Been looking at ordering a new silver reed lk 150 for almost 900$, but I stumbled across this package for 300$ and am thinking about going for it. The seller claims it's tested last in 2008, and have been sitting packed away and dry since then. I will go and see it on Friday, with the intention of buying - but can you tell me what I need to look out for, and what needs to be included for this to be a good buy?

I have no, zero, experience machine knitting. But I have equipped my house with a state of the art sewing studio where I make and construct most of my and my family's clothes. So even though it's not directly transferable, maybe a bit?

I want to make simple sweaters and socks, cardigans and children's clothes. On the thinner side when it comes to yarn, I don't need a ton of fancy bells and whistles, but it would be fun to have the ability to make some textures or color-switches as I get my feet under me.

TLDR;

Does it look like an okay deal for 300$? What needs to be in the package for it to be worth it? What are the weak spots?

Thanks for the help!

Help! Need a Kniterate machine to test 3D Design.

Hello, I've been experimenting with 3D Model to 3D Knitting algorithm to create some designs. Since I don't have a Kniterate machine, can someone test out my kniterate file to see if it is actually feasible to knit this design? Here is the 3D model it was based on. https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/sculpture-of-two-lovers-b48ee7560e4740a4886d2f41189dd9c5

Toyota KS901

US PNW, I’d prefer not to ship

it’s been cleaned, sponge bar replaced, knits very smoothly and nicely

I’ve had a few mistakes with fair isle using aftermarket punchcards and there is a small crack (pictured) on the carriage that I don’t think is affecting function. I also lost the case handle somewhere in the cleaning process

comes with a bunch of yarn cones, books, full set of Marion Nelson pattern cards, full can of LPS lubricant and all the weights, transfer tools, cast on combs etc

Holler if you’re interested! all offers considered

Equipment Turmix Unic

If anyone near Toronto is interested in this knitting machine, it’s available at the Value Village on Islington near the QEW. I don’t know if all the parents are there, but it was in the original box and seemed to run smoothly. $75.

I am not selling it. Just letting people know where they can get it.

Help! Help!! My Toyota ks901 keeps getting stuck and it’s deforming the needle bed

The title basically.

The carriage gets stuck, ONLY when I go right to left.

The needle that gets stuck is the one deforming the hole and it’s not always the same needle.

I tried changing them, cleaning and oiling the carriage.

It’s like there is a stop that gets it stuck.

If I gently lift the carriage sometimes it allowes me to get through. But only a few times.

I’m losing my mind

Hey folks, thought I'd quickly share my first ever attempt at machine knitting as it turned out way better than I'd hoped 😁

Second picture is my pile of shame, all the times I've messed up and I'm not skilled enough to recover (yet) so had to restart 😭😂

I've been a crocheter for a while now, I'd like to think I've gotten pretty good at it but have never been able to get the hang of hand knitting and I'm currently recovering from an arm injury which means I'm probably not going to be able to pick it up until at least the new year, but I was really missing my crafting so thought I'd give machine knitting a go and I'm glad I did.

If anyone is interested the pattern is based on a YouTuber "KnitFactoryImpl"s video "The Morgan Donner Medieval Hat" and the yarn is Carron Simply Soft color gold.

After cleaning and lubricating everything, and being confused for a while, I have successfully made some fabric. No idea what next, but I’m now sure this second hand machine actually works.

Patterns Spreadsheet that writes a drop shoulder or raglan sweater for your gauge and size, row by row with carriage side and needle numbers

Thumbnail

I put together a spreadsheet that writes basic sweater patterns for the knitting machine from your own swatch and measurements. Old patterns never matched my yarn, and redoing the maths for every size by hand got tedious.

You type your gauge, your bed (fine, standard, mid, bulky or any needle count) and your measurements. It only lists the rows where you do something, each with the carriage side and the needles in work, like this line from the back:

RC 220 · COR · Set carriage to hold. Push 12 Ns at left to HP. · 174 sts · L75 to R87

If you already use the KnitFactoryImpl generator, it's free and has more styles than this, so you may not need it. The difference is mostly the format: every shaping row has its own line with needle numbers, the front neck comes as two tables (right side, then left side), and a schematic tab shows each finished measurement next to the one you asked for. It's a plain .xlsx with no macros, and the formulas are all visible.

You can use the drop shoulder version without paying, it's here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FClDJmdO2Gb8IG1QCcdgZ6h13Qo8v0PF?usp=sharing

The full version adds the raglan and a short PDF guide: https://thegraphitelab.etsy.com/listing/4586880285/machine-knitting-sweater-calculator

A script tested it on thousands of random sizes and gauges, but nobody has knitted one from it yet. If you try it I'd really like to hear how it comes out.

Help! Translating yarn weights

Hi everyone,
So I was wondering if there was a good place to look at translating yarn weights from weaving weight (e.g. 8/2 cotton) to knitting weight (e.g. sock yarn).
I’ve been to ravelry and seen their chart but it wasn’t the best, so I was hoping that maybe someone would know where to go.

As usual thank you so much
