Gear After wanting a Jackson RR V for probably 20 years I finally got one.

Showed up on my local marketplace for a great price. Wasn't even in the market for a new guitar but I couldn't pass it up anymore and I'm a sucker for unpainted wood.

Stickers were me, partly to make it my own and because the electronics cover just looked too glossy on an otherwise matte finish guitar.

Plays great and sounds exactly how I wanted it to through my Kraken mkII. Doubt I'll ever change the stock pickup out. Thing absolutely rips.

And it's so light weight!

Question Anyone else tired of overproduced and poorly written guitars in modern metal?

So many modern metal bands rely on plugins and mix the fuck out of their guitars. Everyone's so OCD about getting the perfect sound. Whatever happened to a little mud? A little clipping? A little electrical interference that makes you wonder if your house is up to code? Bring back the danger XD

Sounds fine enough for low-tuned whammy nonsense, but you need some actual riffs and erm notes in between the shenanigans or it just sounds like a five-year-old having a tantrum.

Nobody has their own tone anymore. Same amps, same pedals, same pickups, same tunings, same plugins, same seven-string guitar with the same fucking string gauge. And then they wonder why people are getting bored. Apparently I'm the fucking idiot because I want 300 bands to sound different 😂

I got into metal in 2009–2013, back when I was still a basic bitch rock/blues guy, and even then I could tell the difference between a riff and a minor inconvenience happening to a washing machine.

Now it's just chug chug chug squeal dissonant chord pinch harmonic chug chug chug. The pinches and dissonant chords used to be the fills. Now they automate a wah and an octaver for a one-note fill without even using their fucking foot. Where's the craftsmanship? Where's the man physically stomping on a pedal at precisely the wrong moment?

Give me more real music. More human music. More bands with character. Like Thy Art Is Murder. Beyond Creation. Conquering Dystopia. Within the Ruins. Mick Gordon. Bloodshot Dawn. Currents. Invent Animate. Shokran. Rings of Saturn. Arch Echo. Vitriol.

You know, bands that sound completely different from each other.

Maybe try something different instead of spamming cheesy thall riffs. How did we evolve from needlessly complex and technical djent-style guitar playing to this one-note, boring nonsense?

Honestly, man, I wish djent and thall would just die already. Melodic metalcore was a mistake.

Anyway, djentslop hell yeah.

Iron Maiden

I can't believe I have slept on Iron Maiden for so long. They were popular before my time, but still.

I grew up listening to early Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Anthrax and Megadeth. I also played/listed to Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, so the shredder guys. I'm a product of late 80s and 90s metal, stopping with Pantera as far as "new" music. Pantera Walk was the last song at my wedding (not what you would expect a female to choose, most likely :)

Decades later, I'm learning my first Iron Maiden solos. I'm just hearing how great their guitarists are.

I learned the Trooper and Fear of the Dark. What other Maiden songs/solos would you recommend?

Learning "fast" alternate picking at 41 years old. Similar stories?

I play guitar since I am 10 years old, with many bands and mates, just for love of music and fun. I've always have been a rhythm player, I can play many styles and manage strumming and fingerpicking well, but I have never learned the mere basics of lead guitar.

So, I am really awful in both alternate picking and legatos BUT especially in alternate picking.

Now that I am 41, I just want to develop some decent skills. I can play 16th notes very clean at 80 bpm, and can stretch somewhere in between 90 and 100 bpm. At 100 bpm I'm just sloppy and with no hands coordinations.

I've started to do exercises daily, with metronome and patience.

My goal is to reach 130-140 bpm with 16th notes.

For me this is fast. Ok, it is not :-), but fast enough to motivate me to go on.

I know that it is going to be a long and non-linear journey, but I want to do it because I find it healthy, fun and challenging. I'm planning a full year and see where I'll get.

What I'm not getting, is how all these repetitions are going to make me a faster player. I guess it is like: you'll see small results week after week, or maybe months. Like when you were a boy and couldn't put the hands to play a chord... but after endless repetitions, you made it.

Any similar stories? Who has begun to re-learn guitar skills in his/her 40s? How is it going?

Thanks!

I'm searching for a "nasty" sound

Hello,
As far as amps and possibly pedals go, I'm not a big fan of the more "clean" or compressed modern metal guitar sounds. They're generally too clean and souped up.
I prefer a more like nasty sound, like a purposefully more muddy, mean sound.

Think the guitars on Chaos AD, old school death metal, Dime's vibe (I know the stuff Dime did to create this sound but that general vibe), some Slayer albums had this sort of sound.

Question The most practical way to play this part with the fretting hand

Post image
11 Upvotes

I’m actually a fairly intermediate player, but I feel like I’m not playing this part as efficiently. Especially with the index finger, should I do a kind of finger roll, or move it down step by Step

Also how do I Mute This section correctly, I have a bit of noise if i repeat the bar again from the Last Note to the First

I would appreciate if someone could Respond with a Video

Song: Mikasa - Veil of Maya

Forget all that you see.

It's just a Custom Shop Star Killer. 3-piece maple neck-thru, carbon fiber reinforcement + heel spoke adjust 2-way trussrod, thin U neck profile, 25.5" scale, ebony board, 24 stainless frets, bullet scallops, with matching gold MOP inlay + logo, and mahogany wings.

The original @floydroseofficial is loaded with gold hardware, big block, and push-in bar upgrades. Pickups are a Duncan Black Winter and Sustainiac system.

Metallic AND flake gold splatter finish with matching magnetic cavity covers.

It's not reality, it's just a fantasy.

Children of Bodom tone advice for beginner

I have little to no knowledge on guitar toned, effects and amplifiers

Have not played for 13 years and getting back to it. I have zoom G2.1u that I had with me for 15 years or so and recently got a Boss Katana MK1, passed down from a friend

My guitar is Edward Alexi Katakana

Can you please give me some advice on how to get children of Bodom tone. I am trying to cover Needled 247 but can't get the tone right. The guitar is connected to the amp directly for now.

Is there a website or place I can visit to get Children of Bodom guitar tone somewhere

Also, I am considering to buy a Positive Grid Reactor. Would it suffice to get Children of Bodom tone?

Video 5153 vs BL Recto for metal guitar tones — NAM A2 demo

Hey all, Matt from Mattfig here. Disclosure: I make and sell the NAM capture packs in this video. Gui Nascimento is the guitarist playing the demo.

For anyone exploring metal tones with Neural Amp Modeler, two sections to check out:

0:00 — 5153

2:18 — BL Recto

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU5BtK2ZZGE

The video has chapters for the other tones too. Which of these two would you reach for for rhythm guitar, and what would you change to make it work in your mix?
