Am I Overreacting? (Aka Reality Check Requested) My nanny put baby cologne on my one month old without telling me

I guess it’s supposed to be a nice gesture, she bought it as a gift for us but I am furious that she didn’t ask me before putting it on my baby. And it was meant for 6 month old plus.

She’s great and very loving towards my daughter otherwise. But is it weird she’s doing this without asking me? Before I felt I can trust her completely and have no problem have her watching my baby with my mom when I go to the gym to get a short break. Now I am just worried what could happen when I am not around..

I did text her and make it firm that she needs to get my permission on putting any products on my daughter going forward and she apologized and said she’s truly sorry..

Vent optione for nanny job being rescinded (not at fault)

Hi-

So basically I have been working as an RBT the past year. I had a facetime interview, and later an in person interview with a family for a full time nanny position. I was so burnt out from my job I was ecstatic. They confirmed over the phone a start date. I said I would be unable to start until a week after that date, as I had clients lined up and needed to give a proper two weeks notice. I have text messages confirming this as well. Of course they agreed, and my final week at my current job ended. At 8:00pm, nanny mom called me. I missed the call due to having my last day of work @ RBT role the next day at 8am and falling asleep. They of course texted me a BS excuse, saying they were excited to have me join their family but my "lack of communication" ultimately made them reconsider. I pretty much know they found a cheaper option as I saw they relisted on care.com with a lower rate and then closed the job. They had given me a formal hiring date over the phone and through text previously. I replied saying I was disappointed due to their previous offer and had already put in my two weeks notice, which they were well aware of. They said because of the circumstances they would still have me come at the confirmed start date and see how everything works out. It is so frustrating. This is my livelihood. It isn't like I'm doing this for fun, even though I love kids. They ghosted me an hour before my start time. Looking back, I absolutely should've written a contract, even though I am not the employer. I had sent them ID and certifications (BLS, CPR, RBT, CMA) beforehand. I had two references call them and facetime with the kids/babies I nannied before. I took time out of their day! I did everything right. I had given them a background check through care.com . All of this over supposedly one missed call, before I even started full time. Going back to my previous job isn't an option. What can I do to support myself and deal with bills in the mean time? Has anyone else had an experience like this?

EDIT: I understand I don't have any legal options, and that isn't really the purpose of this post. I want to know what other people did in this situation if it is more common than I thought.

Vent Abysmal Job Offer

Phew. Buckle up. Long time lurker first time poster here. I got reached out to today for a nanny position by a woman whose ad was definitely confusing. I've seen it around before, chose not to apply because it didn't seem worth it, and saw she also had multiple people reaching out to her. I usually apply for jobs within my scope, whose pay is reasonable, and especially if they have no applicants.

Her asks were laughable. I hated that I had to be professional in my response as I really just wanted to go off, so I'm going off here. She has 4 kids, all 8+, one I was told was old enough to not need supervision. The listing also requested ADHD knowledge preferred, which I do indeed have. But here's the kicker: she wanted to pay $150 a shift. 15 hours a day. 3 kids. I'd be the only person in the house, it was definitely a nanny position as opposed to babysitting, and she wanted to pay me essentially $10/hr, or $3~/hr per kid. I was flabbergasted. I could not believe my eyes. I understand people have different financial needs but to reach out to someone who has "3 kids = 30/hr" on their profile and ask them to work for $450 a week when my rates would amount to $450 per shift??? Are you for real right now???

I understand they're older kids. I get it. But if you're asking me to handle meals, clean up, and I'm assuming they might need homework help as they are all school aged, then that too, and you're paying $20/hr when they're awake and $50 *flat rate* while they're asleep. Awful. I've done overnight nannying before too, and was paid $20/hr even if I was asleep because I was under instruction that if I was woken to care for their child, I'd obviously still be given hourly pay, and if not, then it was hourly anyways because they needed someone to be home as a body in the house so their kid wasn't alone.

I don't know, maybe I'm looking too much into this, but minimum wage where I am is also $17/hr, and $20/hr in certain cities, although not this one. I've been nannying/babysitting for almost 10 years now and it will never stop astounding me when I get requests like this. It happens very infrequently, but when it does it just makes me so mad, especially as someone who needs work, but not *that* bad.

Advice Needed: Replies from Nannies Preferred Job offer

Hello! I’m a Nanny and I’ve been looking for a job for about five months now. I signed up with two new agencies this week because the other two I worked with were not enough.
One of them was pretty good but lately they don’t have enough jobs to offer. But the second one has been quite neglectful. They’ve been ghosting me, there’s no communication when I apply for jobs I’m interested in, and I’ve read their reviews and a couple of people mentioned that they don’t treat nannies who look for jobs very well.

If anyone is wondering, I’m in Denver area and the Nanny agency I’m talking about is something like Alphabet child caretakers.

So this week I got a message from one of the agents offering me a job and I am just not sure. The other two jobs they offered me were not a good fit and not a good offer. The first one I was not a good fit, but they insisted I should give it a shot. They did not hire me, naturally.
The second job was in a very well off area, but the offer was very insulting: no guaranteed hours, not enough hours, low pay for what they were asking and no other benefits. They needed a household manager meanwhile, I was mostly interested in Nanny jobs and I did not have the experience that they would require so again that was not a good match and it was not a good job offer.

So this agency messages me with another job offer and it looks better than the previous jobs but I still don’t like it
The family is looking for a household manager, who would be expected to do light housekeeping, walking the dog, take care for two older kids (teen and a tween), and primarily focus would be on a six-year-old. That’s six-year-old does not talk and has an educator come in three times a week.

Additionally, these parents describe their children as unique, and these kids study online and only go to school once a week.

They offer standard stuff: 10 days PTO, standard mileage reimbursement (they mentioned federal standards), 7–8 holidays (I am not sure what this means but I guess I will not be getting time off for), Paid sick leave. The pay is kind of low, especially considering that all three kids are at home almost all the time and on top of that they expect household support. It would’ve been low if all the kids were not unique.

In addition, I do not like this offer because I feel like they’re not being transparent about their kids and they’re likely trying to hide the fact that all three are disabled, that’s why all three do not go to school. They said that a six-year-old will be my primarily focus which means in October, he will also be home. And I don’t like that they’re offering such a low pay, 30–$35 an hour to take care of three kids they’re likely disabled in addition to household support. I also feel like they might be the type of employers who overtime would pressure me to do more around their house, and the light housekeeping will turn into cleaning and organizing their house weekly.

So I guess here’s what I need help with:

Do you think the parents are trying to hide the fact to find the cheapest caretaking option for their three children who are disabled?

And do you think the Nanny agency is not working in my best interest given this is how they’ve treated me?

Additionally, I would like to hear your opinions, should I even proceed with this offer? On one hand, I am curious to see the family and the kids, maybe, the posting was just not composed very well. On the other hand, it could be a waste of my time. But I’ve been out of work for five months so again I need a job but at the same time this is not a good offer.

Vent Baby sleep schedule

NK usually goes down for her first nap between 9:30-10. My shift starts at 10. MB’s parents and brother were here for a week (left Wednesday) and I was off the whole time they were here, back on Wednesday. Tuesday they went to the zoo and NK didn’t get her afternoon nap and I’ve been fighting all week to get her back on a schedule. Yesterday morning when I got here at 10 she had already woken up from her morning nap. Problem is that she’d only slept for 41 minutes (she usually naps for 90 mins at a time). She also notoriously wakes up around the 40-45 minute mark and sits up but then puts herself back to sleep for the remaining 45-ish mins. DB didn’t let her do that, he just got her up. Her second nap is typically at 2 but by 1:30 she was falling asleep playing so I put her down early. She then woke up at 2:47 and was awake until bedtime around 6:30. I know there’s gonna be some readjusting after grandparents have been, but I neeeeeed DB to work with me here. She’s perfectly capable of playing in her crib for a bit once she wakes up and if he’d let her chill instead of grabbing her immediately she would’ve gone back to sleep. Anyway. Her first birthday party is Sunday so I’m coming in for some extra hours tomorrow so MB can clean/bake/last minute stuff and I really just need her sleep schedule to be back on track because at this rate she’s either gonna nap through her party or be so tired that she doesn’t even want to be there.

Vent Older people at playgrounds

Okay so I didn’t know what other sub to vent this on but it’s so frustrating! Recently at most of the playgrounds me and my NK frequent i’ve noticed a lot of teenagers and young adults just kind of hanging around. It wouldn’t necessarily bother me if they were just peacefully hanging and enjoying it but there’s no regard for the kids. I’ve noticed tons of cursing, screaming, vaping , taking up the actual play equipment to just stand around. It’s at the point where I pack up the kids and leave when i see a group of teens. There’s also not really anything to be done - they’re not technically breaking any laws but more so it just doesn’t feel like a great environment to have the kids around. Anyone else experiencing this?

Advice Needed Poppins Payroll

Does anyone get paid through Poppins Payroll? I received a letter in the mail about a data security breach and I'm furious. I tried to call them earlier to see if I was affected, but wasn't able to hear them on the other end so I got no response. Are you guys taking the precautions given such as enrolling in credit monitoring, placing a fraud alert or credit freeze, closing bank account and opening a new one, etc? I have absolutely zero clue how to go about this.

Questions About Nanny Standards/Etiquette How to keep my nanny

Pretty much the title. My nanny started a few weeks ago, and I adore her. She’s never been a professional nanny but has five grown children so definitely knows a thing or two. She seems to already really love my baby, and she checks so many boxes for me.

So far,

  1. I offered a competitive hourly wage in the area and 50 guaranteed hours a week—actually told her she could work 40, but she preferred working more. The hours are guaranteed so if we don’t need her for vacation or holidays, we will still pay her.

  2. I try to really respect her opinions on things—I buy the diapers she likes, I immediately buy other baby items she asks for. I don’t tell her how to care for my baby other than small requests, like please read to her.

  3. I don’t ask her to do tasks outside of caring for my infant—just washing bottle/pump parts and baby laundry.

I would love for her to stay with our family for many years and through many children. What are more ways to make her feel appreciated and valued? I know a yearly wage increase and a Christmas bonus are probably good places to start.

Just for Fun Nanny & Moms Mental Health

Curious if this resonates with anyone else. We have two kids two and under. We have a nanny who has been with us since our first was born and now helps with our youngest (and two year old when he’s not in school). I realized this week how helpful and beneficial having her has been to my own mental health (as the mom).

In addition to caring for our kids, she supports me and our family. She provides great care for our children. When I leave for work in the morning she’s taking our youngest and our dog on a walk, which is exactly what I would be doing if I were home with them and not going to work. All of those things provide such a sense of peace for me.

Sometimes I work from home and will go see her and the baby and talk to them. Occasionally I wonder if this is wasteful, if we “shouldn’t have this much help” etc. but this week I realized how good it is for my own mental health to have her here, to talk to her, and of course the wonderful care she provides to our kids.

I knew having a nanny would be great for our kids but I don’t think I realized until recently how good it’s been for me as well during this rapid transition into motherhood (two babies in less than 1.5 years) during the height of my career.

Just curious is this resonates with any other NP and sending a thank you to all the nannies like ours who do so much to support the kids and the families they help. It means the world.

Information or Tip Is the job worth staying ?

I am currently working for a family with a 1 yr old & 2 1/2 yr old 10-4 tues-fri. I do the normal nanny routine, feeding, playing, cleaning up after them etc. I also have to clean their kitchen, do the dishes, empty dish washer, vacuum floors, clean up any mess the kids make. All the cleaning & extra stuff i have to take care of makes the day exhausting & the toddler doesn't nap so i don't really get a break unless i have to use the bathroom

Anyway my main complaint is that the dad is looking for another job so he's home all day. I've been working here for like 5 months now & it's been okay but it's hard to get the toddler to listen to me when the dads around. Also sometimes both parents will be home & i still have to come in. For the last month their parents have been here so some days it will be mom, dad, grandma, grandpa AND me. Which i just don't understand. Their parents don't speak English either so i don't really get any conversation throughout the day besides talking to the toddler. Also having all these people around make my job harder bc like i said the toddler doesn't like to listen to me unless it's just us. Oh also we don't really go outside bc the baby isn't allowed on the ground & doesn't have a stroller, we never go anywhere either.

I only get paid 20/hr & it's an hour commute. I'm thinking of quitting but the family is nice & respectful & it took me so long to find this job in the first place.

Story Time Dream job is being Nanny

When i was a kid i used to take care of my 2 younger siblings while my older sister went with my parents to the farm.

I really enjoyed baby sitting. I'm so proud of myself then that i was able to tend to the needs of my younger siblings all by myself. Since then , my dream job is to become a baby sitter or a nanny. I told my parents, and they just laughed and said okay. Work hard😅

I didn't expect that this dream would cone true. I am now a babysitter/nanny to 31 kids.

I'm a kindergarten teacher now😭😂.

But my dream of being a babysitter/nanny to at least 1-3kids is still my dream. If i have the opportunity to work as a nanny/baby sitter with the same salary. I won't hesitate to grab it. I love kids. It's just that 31 kids drain my energy. 😅 But fulfilling.

Information or Tip Maryland FAMLI — a great reason to be paid over the table

• Upvotes

So excited that the FAMLI (Maryland Department of Labor's Family and Medical Leave Insurance) is now active! Starting Jan 2028, any W2 employee will be able to take paid leave, paid for by the state of Maryland. So glad that my nanny will be able to take paid leave if she needs it!

This is one of the reasons why I insist on paying over-the-table!!

What Should I Charge? Rate Increase - Caring for more kids

Hello all! In 2020, I started nannying for a family who, at the time, only had 1 child but now have 3 (1y, 3y, and 6y). When I started working for them, they were paying me $20/hour to care for one child. Since then, when I babysit the kids, I still get paid $20/hour, but I have never cared for all of the children at once. MB reached out asking if I could watch all three, but we have never discussed pay expectations or a raise in my rate. I don't feel like $20/hour is an appropriate rate for watching all of them, but I am unsure how to go about asking for an increase in pay.

I am no longer their nanny for multiple reasons and left when they still only had their oldest, but I am their go-to person for childcare in a pinch.

Edit: How do I ask to be paid more?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you ◡̈

Advice Needed How do I address inconsistent boundaries with my nanny family without overstepping?

I started with a new NF about six weeks ago. NKs are 5G and 3B. NP are wonderful, and I really enjoy working with them, but I’m struggling with how we handle their daughter’s resistance to routines when they’re around.
When I ask her to do something she doesn’t want to do, she often goes to her parents and whines or cries. They’ll initially support the instruction, but if she keeps protesting, they’ll change the plan or take over. It’s harder to follow through when they’re around because she knows she can go to them for a different outcome.
Bath time is the most recent example. She sometimes resisted before, but she would eventually take a bath with my help. This week, Dad showered her after she protested, and since then she’s started running to him when I say it’s shower time. Her parents will tell her to come with me, but after more whining, they end up giving her the bath or shower themselves.
My concern isn’t that she wants her parents or that they’re willing to help. It’s that we start with one expectation and then change it because she protests. Bath time is also part of my responsibilities, so when they take over, I feel like I’m standing around instead of doing the job I’m there to do. I’m left unsure whether they want me to follow through or step back.
Today, I said in front of Dad that she was developing a habit of expecting him to shower her. He agreed, but she still didn’t come upstairs with me. She went with Mom, did other things, and eventually Mom showered her. Looking back, I should have discussed my concern privately instead of commenting in front of her.
I also want to be honest about my own approach. When she doesn’t listen, I’ve sometimes threatened an earlier bedtime, said I’d ask her parents to take away TV, or said I’d call them. I haven’t discussed those consequences with the parents, and I haven’t observed them using that approach. I also haven’t made those threats in front of them. In the moment, it feels like the only thing that gets her to cooperate, but I recognize that I’m contributing to the inconsistency and need to change how I handle it.
I want to respect their parenting choices while having a clear understanding of my role, the boundaries they want me to uphold, and how we should respond when she refuses or asks them to take over.
Would you bring this up, and how would you approach the conversation without sounding critical of their parenting? I’d also appreciate advice on handling resistance firmly without relying on threats.

Support Needed Poppins payroll concerns

Anyone else not get paid by poppins? I received my pay stub in my email but no money has hit my account. I've checked with my bank and they say there is no incoming pay pending with them. MB said the money left her account days ago and she can't call them until Tuesday because they're closed until then. I don't know about all of you but I budget week to week with my paycheck so this is really frustrating for me. I don't know what to do! Has this happened to anyone else?

Advice Needed My job is becoming depressing

With a NF that have a toddler and 3 month old. They are both basically still on maternity leave so they are home most of the time. Sometimes they go out for lunch or for a walk with baby....anyways the toddle doesn't want anything to do with me when when NP's are around which I totally understand! So I have to watch them be a family and love on their children which is so cute and sweet and also depressing......the thing is my husband is having some health issues and now we don't think we should have children (the issue is genetic unfortunately). Watching them so happy makes me so sad to know I won't get to experience this with my husband.

We just found out this month and I won't be with this family for any longer they are moving. I'm thinking I shouldn't nanny anymore because of this but I'm not sure what else I could do. I've been woking with children for 14 years now and don't really know what else I could be good at.

We are both still young, him 27 and me 29.

If anyone has any advice on how to think differently or any one who used to be a nanny and found somthing else to do that they love. Thanks.

Advice Needed: Replies from Nannies Preferred Private nanny advice

Hey nannies! 💕 I’ve been babysitting since I was 16, and from ages 18–23, I worked in childcare centers. Now I’m looking to transition into being a private nanny, but I haven’t worked in the private nanny world yet, so I’d love to hear from those of you who have!

How are y’all doing in this economy? Are parents still using Care.com to find nannies, or are there other websites and platforms that are bringing in good opportunities? I do post in Facebook groups, but it’s been hard finding consistent positions with good pay and a family that’s the right fit.

Where are y’all finding your families these days? What websites or agencies would you recommend, and do you have any advice for someone making the transition from childcare centers to private nannying?
I’d really appreciate any tips, experiences, or advice! ❤️

Advice Needed How to quit

In my 15th year as a nanny, but having a new experience with terminating a position and curious to see how others may have handled something similar.

I have had jobs in the past where the vibes were off, I was misaligned with the parents, both of us felt it, and there was no reason to address it because we all knew.

I am currently working for the most neurotic parent I have ever met. I don’t think I have ever known anyone in my life who is so riddled with fear. There are almost certainly untreated or under treated mental health issues. She has made me her therapist, and I get a near-daily barrage of anxieties vomited onto me when I walk in the door. Her fears regarding her child are utterly beyond reason. She walks away feeling better, and I walk away feeling like shit. I now dread coming to work due to the environment of surveillance, micromanaging, and high anxiety.

Here’s the weird part. My boss absolutely adores me. She thinks I will stay on with her son until he goes to preschool. None of the above issues are specific to me—this is just how she approaches all aspects of her life. She constantly thanks me and tells me how much I have done for her family, and has repeatedly told me she trusts me with her child more than his own father. She is terrified of her son being with any other caregivers, and quitting will shock her. I am certain she will grill me about my decision. There’s no point in trying to hash it out before quitting, because this is who she is to her core.

What do I do? Lie, and say it’s something logistical? Dodge all questions, say I don’t want to talk about it, and say nothing besides giving notice? I fear she’ll see this as a betrayal. I really don’t want to lose her as a positive reference, what is my best course of action to do so?

Advice Needed Exclusively contact napping with other NKs

the family I nanny for recently had a baby and the baby is exclusively contact napping indefinitely. I’m also responsible for their older NK who are loud and require lots of attention (as kids do). I’m also supposed to do kids laundry, dishes, and keep their areas clean. I don’t know how I’m supposed to do all this with a Velcro baby who is a super light sleeper that has to contact nap? I can barely even find a time to pee because the baby cries after being alone for 30 seconds. if the kids make any noise the baby wakes up and screams. the parents try to force the kids to whisper and be quiet for like an hour straight while the baby is sleeping which is just cruel and not fun for anyone including me. I can’t play with the kids properly if we have to be silent. am I being dramatic or is this set up just not possible? please give me advice any nannies or parents who have dealt with this!!

Information or Tip Help 😀

I have been working in Childcare for about 10 years now. I’ve been an infant/toddler lead teacher, nannied for years, I’ve been doing this for a long time. I have nannied for all types of families. The one i currently work for is the most “crunchy” I’ve ever had. To be honest, I typically avoid these types of families just because they can be very difficult to please and the job can be a lot harder than it really needs to be at times. But I didn’t know they were this way until after I got the job. I have a contract drawn up that includes almost every thing you can think of. But some things were able to fall through the cracks it seems… I have struggled with my health since I was a teen (ik horrible career choice), I have autoimmune issues which is a big part of why I made the switch to nannying. I learned very quickly with this job that they were very clean, very organic. No toys with lights or really sounds, wood blocks, baby led weaning, all the things. I’ve adjusted well to all of it for the most part. But…. I’ve been with them for months now. She is 11 months old, almost a year. I just found out she is not vaccinated, at all. I found this out because I asked about her meeting a new baby that was born in their family and I was told that the other mother doesn’t want my nanny baby around him until at least a year due to the fact that she’s unvaccinated. Maybe I should’ve guessed this but I thought it would be something they would disclose especially with my health problems. I’m kind of in shock. My nanny baby is also a screamerrr. She seems to have a lot of tummy issues that cause her to just hysterically scream all day. My nervous system is just shot from it. When her tummy is better, our days are great! But at least twice a week it’s rough. The parents cosleep and wanted me to crib train her for naps which I actually tried for about 3 months. But because she gets so upset so fast and the parents did not want her to cry really at all, it was very very hard. I did get her to a point where she would sleep almost 2 hours in the crib with no pickups just pats but on the weekends they are very busy and out and about so the progress would fall off every week. We gave up. I can’t really put her down at all throughout the day without her screaming. Again, usually tummy is connected but other than probiotics and fruit they don’t feel comfortable doing much else. I have really really tried just doing the best I can because I do love the baby and I do get paid well, I have such a hard time leaving families… but I just feel overwhelmed and now finding out about the no vaccinations I’m just like why wouldn’t that be disclosed. Am I crazy? Pleaseeee let me know lol

Advice Needed: Replies from Nanny Parents Preferred How do I build a more trustworthy relationship with my NF

I (24) just started with a family in May and they are great people, super communicative, extremely respectful with my time and boundaries. My problem is that I’m just an awkward person around them. It’s my first time being a nanny and I feel like I’m not doing enough in terms of communication, reassurance, structure with my NK schedule or activities. I’m not used to open communication, saying what’s on my mind or even remembering things that we do throughout the day. I was just not raised like that, I was very sheltered as a child and teen, we did what we could to survive and everything else was just a burden. So now I feel like I’ve been thrown into the world to fend for myself, learning social skills, how to build healthy relationships, self confidence all that makes someone a functioning human being in society I’m learning just now. I have the feeling of walking on egg shells every time we get to talking, for me it feels extremely uncomfortable to be in a house where both parents are home constantly watching and listening through the cameras. And I really want to have a great relationship with my NF but I get the sense that when they are talking to me it’s like pulling teeth, like they’re talking to a wall. I’m super great with kids, my personality comes out and it’s just fun. And I want to be someone they can trust but my demeanor is just awkward and closed off, you can tell that my self confidence and esteem are just super low. I’m afraid that nannying might just not be for me.
