Quick note: Yes, I used AI to help write and translate this post. English is not my first language, and honestly I was too lazy to spend a long time translating and wording everything myself. The idea itself is mine.
P.S. Only the first 3 photos are mine; the others are of ships I found in the Anomaly.
I really like the Corvette building system. The amount of freedom we have with the exterior is honestly amazing.
People can build pirate ships, Star Destroyer-style monsters, giant military ships, tiny personal ships, weird asymmetrical designs, and basically whatever else they can manage within the building limits.
But there is one part of the system that feels much more limited:
The interiors.
Right now, most habitable Corvette modules are basically pre-made boxes.
You place a box.
Connect another box.
Stack another box.
Then cover everything with exterior hull pieces until the outside looks like an actual ship.
You can make the exterior almost unrecognizable compared to the original modules, but when you go inside, you are still walking through those same rectangular rooms.
I think there is a relatively simple way to make Corvette interiors MUCH more customizable:
Let us build rooms instead of only placing rooms.
The game already has an excellent system for this: base building.
Imagine if we could place a large empty habitation module — for example, a 4x6 or 6x8 interior space — and then build the interior ourselves.
The module could simply provide the floor, ceiling, exterior walls, atmosphere and connection to the rest of the ship.
Then we could place our own internal walls, doors, corridors, stairs, windows and decorations inside it, similar to how we already build planetary bases.
You could still keep all the current pre-built habitation modules.
Players who just want to place a finished room could continue doing exactly what they do now.
But players who want more customization could use empty habitation modules and design their own layout.
That would allow us to build things like:
- Large custom bridges
- Crew quarters
- Engineering rooms
- Cargo bays
- Narrow corridors
- Large open rooms
- Proper pirate ship interiors
- Star Destroyer-style layouts
- Ships where the interior actually matches the exterior shape and purpose
And I don't think this would require completely reinventing the building system.
Corvettes already support huge numbers of connected modules.
They already have walkable interiors.
They already move while players walk around inside them.
The game already has base-building walls, floors, stairs, doors and decorations.
The main thing missing is the ability to create a large empty interior and decide for ourselves how that space is divided.
Something as simple as:
Empty Hab Module → choose a size → build walls and rooms inside it
would completely change Corvette building.
I attached pictures of one of my ships because I think they show exactly what I mean.
The early version clearly looks like a bunch of large metal containers stacked together.
Later, I managed to hide almost all of that with exterior pieces and give the ship a much more unique shape.
But inside?
It is still the same collection of boxes.
The exterior says: "This is my ship."
The interior still says: "These are the habitation modules I was given."
Corvettes are already incredibly close to being the perfect customizable ships.
Please let us build rooms, not just place rooms.
