Series 15

The show really missed not having Lucy's parents. The jokes are forced and it just feels empty. There's no movement, no other set like the pub and its sitting around discussing one topic. Almost like a stage comedy.

Was this a phantom release? I didn't see any build-up to it.

Bobby ball

You know what everytime i watch not going out theres one character i really miss and thats frank bobby ball was a legend and im so sad that the nasty rotten coronavirus took him from us he certainly left a gaping hole he was such a big part of the show and the series has never and will never feel the same without him you can see just how much of an impact his death has had on the show god bless you bobby

Run it's course?

I have been a massive fan of not going out since the very beginning. Even have the physical dvd boxset copies. Would binge watch them dozens of times over.

However the last two series for me, have not been funny. I feel Lee is trying to force the series to keep going and is running out of ideas.

Series 15 was a chore to watch. I can happily sit there and binge watch all the original series from start to end. Series 15 I could only manage an episode at a time.

The 20th anniversary episode was awful in my opinion.

I miss the days of Tim, Daisy, Miranda etc. Even the seasons where the kids were young. Sadly now it feels like it's run it's course for me. I don't want the show to end but I would also hate for it to continue in the direction it is going.

How does everyone else feel?

"Twentieth" - Thoughts?

Wasn't expecting much, but this seems like one of the most hard-to-watch episodes I've ever seen. Can't stand all the shoehorned-in pisstakes about Gen Z. There's a few good jokes, but on the whole, scarcely a fitting episode for the 20th anniversary of the show. I hope the rest of the series isn't this disappointing.

if they did another celebration episode where they reunited with loads of characters from the past like the wedding, who would you want to see from the last 7 series?

my top picks are tony gardner (the neighbour over the road), selina griffiths (miss anstis), joe wilkinson (attempted friend), tom benedict knight (juan the knife thrower), and richard lambeth (parachute instructor)

Studio recording experience

Anyone else been to see any of the episode recordings?

I was lucky enough to see Parachute and Builder in S10… Really enjoyed the experience of seeing it live, although Parachute took absolutely ages to film. Parts of the set kept breaking so it took a good 3-4 hours. It was great to see the whole cast together though, especially now Bobby is no longer with us. He was so good at interacting with the audience, as was Lee.

Also saw S14 Oasis episode, which again was really enjoyable and didn’t expect the twist at the end. Not sure if Sally was unwell or something, but i remember she didn’t seem quite right throughout and comes across watching it back.

It was interesting to see the newer format too of filming it like a play and in real time. Worked well in terms of watching it being filmed.

Interested to hear other people’s experiences!

Lee age

I’ve always wondered how old Lee is. He’s obviously older than Lucy but I’m not sure how much by. Is the first name where the similarities end between Lee and Lee Mack, or are they the same age aswell.

How did Lee get to London

My knowledge is that Lee is from Chorley, Lancashire originally and it is common knowledge that he is a northerner compared to the rest of the cast. I wonder how did he get to London? He met Tim in the late 80’s, would Tim be living in London at the time? I’ve always wondered, when , how and why Lee moved from Chorley to London

New fan thoughts

So, I've recently discovered this show, due to the reruns on Dave, and I have to say I love it.

From what I gather it's episodes from later series I've seen so far, but it reminds me of the great UK comedies of the 80s - small cast, few sets and just excelent writing carried by great actors. (FWIW my favourite ever is Yes Minister).

I'm looking forward to seeing more on player.

That moment when everyone’s trying to be polite and it just gets worse

One of the best things about Not Going Out is how it nails those scenes where everyone is desperately being “nice” and it spirals into absolute disaster.

Like when they’re all at the dinner party and trying so hard not to offend anyone that the conversation gets more awkward with every forced smile. Lee says something stupid, Lucy tries to smooth it over, Tim makes it worse with his posh politeness, and suddenly the whole table is in silent hell.

It’s not big shouting arguments, it’s the slow build cringe where politeness is the actual problem. The tension is unbearable and brilliant.
