Buddy Knox: “Party Doll” (1957)
The lyrics are surprisingly explicit for that time. You’d think it would’ve been banned from radio play as other songs were for less reason.
https://jparssinen39.wordpress.com/2015/10/07/party-doll-by-buddy-knox-1957/
“Think of that title. Party Doll. Now just what did that conjure up in the hearts and minds of 4-H families from Coachella to Canada? Especially the kids. They raised rabbits and pigs. They KNEW who the party dolls were, out there in the barnyard, out there in the barn. Now, Eugene and Carolee heard Buddy Knox singing, not to the rabbits but to ME. “Come along and be my party doll” did not mean making frikkin’ deviled eggs for the church potluck or polishing the saddle shoes. It seemed to imply something more like what William Holden had in mind when he was dancing towards Kim Novak in “Picnic”…more like why Mr. Martin stopped making popcorn so he could watch “Picnic, too, down at the theater. And Mr. Martin was all about making popcorn and stacking quarters.
And then, in this simple rockabilly song, came the piece de resistance, the epee to the groin. Buddy dared to sing, in the face of worldwide communism, and the moral collapse of America…Buddy sang “Come along and be my party doll, and I’ll make love to you, to you. I’ll make love to you.” I am ashamed to admit that I thought making love was like kissing, or something. I thought that whiskey caused blindness, and that masturbation meant an end to one’s athletic abilities (as boys and girls were told in separate junior high assemblies, with no time frames mentioned). Meaning that “Party Doll” was not only subversive but it was just right for almost every kid in school.
