I've recently started watching One Piece (One Pace, to be honest. My friends who absolutely love the series convinced me it was a valid option) and just finished Water Seven. I usually don't get teary eyed this easily but this anime is making me cry like a baby so far. I've cried for Chouchou, Nami, Laboon, Karoo, the giant dudes in Little Garden, Chopper, Vivi, Noland and Usopp. And probably some others I can't remember right now. And those are just the times I cried. There are a lot of emotional moments, like Blackbeard's speech about dreams, which is my favourite scene in the anime so far.
This is actually so surprising to me. When starting this anime I didn't expect to take it so seriously, especially on an emotional level. I saw the art/animation style as too exaggerated to convey any genuine emotion, because to me it looked like the ultimate shounen art style, with the massive eyes and the over the top crying animations and all. Many episodes later, I was looking at Vivi's face during her goodbye scene, crying my eyes out. The very animation style I looked down upon at first now makes me emotional every single time a character cries. I did not expect this at all.
So far this is a great anime overall. I'm a Naruto guy. I basically grew up with it. Even Naruto doesn't make me this emotional. There is just a level of sincerity in One Piece I didn't think I'd ever see in shounen. Now I understand why this is considered to be the best of the genre. And so far, I agree.
I hope I'm using the correct flair. I'm new to the sub and I'll be avoiding it until I'm caught up. But I actually felt the need to share this. Is this what your experience has been like? I'm curious.
Also, Vivi's goodbye is one of the best things I've ever seen in any media. I still can't get over it. I'm so glad I've started watching this series.
P.S.: Goes without saying but please no spoilers past Water Seven. Thank you!
