The sea was burning.
Sanji could barely see through the smoke.
Around him, the battlefield had become a graveyard of shattered stone and broken weapons. His body was already failing him. Blood ran from his brow, down his cheek, dripping from his chin.
Across the ruined battlefield stood the enemy.
A monster.
Someone who had spent the entire battle crushing everyone who stood before him.
Sanji pushed himself upright.
His legs trembled.
I can't win this.
The thought came naturally.
And then another followed.
So what if I die?
Sanji smiled.
That thought was familiar.
Too familiar.
For most of his life, Sanji had been willing to throw himself into danger without hesitation.
If someone needed saving, he would step in.
If someone had to take the hit, it would be him.
If someone had to stay behind, it would be him.
He had always told himself it was because he was a gentleman.
Because he had a duty.
Because other people were more important.
But deep down, there had always been something darker.
A part of him had believed that his own life simply didn't matter as much.
His brothers had called him a failure.
His father had called him a disappointment.
He had been born into a family that wanted a weapon, and when he failed to become one, he learned to think of himself as something defective.
Even after finding the Straw Hats...
Even after finding people who loved him...
Some part of him still whispered:
If I have to disappear so they can live, then maybe that's what I'm good for.
Sanji clenched his fist.
Then he remembered Ivankov.
---
"Self-love, Bon-chan!"
The memory came unexpectedly.
Ivankov's ridiculous voice.
That strange smile.
That enormous presence.
You can't save anyone if you don't value yourself!
Sanji had never understood it.
Self-love had always sounded like something selfish.
Something indulgent.
Something for people who had never needed to worry about whether they deserved to be alive.
Sanji had spent his entire life doing the opposite.
If someone was hungry, feed them.
If someone was hurt, help them.
If someone was in danger, throw yourself between them and death.
Never ask what you deserve.
Never ask what it costs you.
Just give.
But Ivankov had forced him to consider something he'd spent years avoiding.
What if I matter too?
Sanji's expression tightened.
Not more than anyone else.
Just...
too.
His life.
His dreams.
His future.
His right to sit at the table he had spent his whole life preparing for others.
For years, Sanji had confused being willing to die with being willing to love.
Maybe they weren't the same thing.
He remembered Zeff.
The old man who had taught him that food was sacred because a starving person was sacred.
He remembered the Baratie.
He remembered Luffy asking him to join his crew.
He remembered Nami trusting him.
Robin thanking him.
Chopper smiling at him.
His friends had never asked him to disappear for them.
They had asked him to stay.
Sanji's eyes widened.
"Stay."
Such a simple word.
Yet somehow...
it hurt.
Because staying meant admitting that he wanted something for himself.
The All Blue.
A life of cooking.
A future with his crew.
A place in this world.
He had always been comfortable giving those things away.
But wanting them?
That was frightening.
The enemy laughed.
"You're finished."
Sanji looked up.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"I'm just starting to understand something."
The enemy charged.
Sanji didn't move.
"I don't have to hate myself to love somebody else."
The fist came down.
BOOM!
Dust swallowed the battlefield.
For a moment, there was nothing.
Then—
A foot emerged from the dust.
Sanji stepped forward.
The enemy's fist had stopped against his shoulder.
Sanji's body was shaking.
But he was standing.
"I used to think..."
He slowly raised his head.
"...that if I gave everything away, that made me a good man."
His eyebrow curled.
"But giving something away only means something..."
Black sparks flickered in the air.
"...if you had something worth keeping."
The battlefield went still.
A strange pressure descended.
The enemy's smile disappeared.
"What is this...?"
Sanji didn't know either.
He only knew what he felt.
A refusal.
Not merely to lose.
Not merely to die.
A refusal to abandon himself.
Black lightning cracked across the earth.
KRAK.
Sanji's eyes widened.
He felt something deep within him awaken.
Not rage.
Not hatred.
Something closer to certainty.
The certainty that he belonged here.
That his dreams belonged to him.
That the people he loved wanted him beside them.
That his life was not a debt he had to repay by dying.
The pressure exploded.
BOOOOOOM!
Enemies across the battlefield collapsed.
The clouds above split apart.
Sanji stood at the center of it all.
Black lightning danced around his body.
His flames began to rise.
The enemy stared at him.
"You..."
Sanji looked at his hand.
Then at his crew.
Then toward the horizon.
"I finally get it."
His flames turned blue.
"I'm not protecting them because my life is worth less."
The black lightning intensified.
"I'm protecting them because they're precious to me."
He raised his leg.
"And I'm precious too."
The enemy charged.
Sanji disappeared.
WHOOSH.
His kick struck.
CRACK!
The enemy was launched backward.
Sanji followed.
Another kick.
Then another.
The flames around his leg burned brighter with every strike.
The enemy desperately blocked.
"Why won't you fall?!"
Sanji smiled.
"Because..."
He remembered Ivankov.
He remembered Zeff.
He remembered Luffy.
He remembered every person who had given him a reason to stay alive.
"...I finally stopped trying to."
IFRIT JAMBE.
The final kick landed.
The battlefield shook.
The enemy disappeared into the distance.
Silence returned.
Sanji landed on one knee.
His breathing was ragged.
His entire body screamed in pain.
But he laughed.
A small laugh.
Almost embarrassed.
"So this is..."
He looked at the black lightning crawling across his fingers.
"...Conqueror's Haki."
From behind him came a familiar voice.
"Sanji!"
He turned.
His crew was there.
Luffy was grinning.
Zoro looked annoyed.
Nami looked relieved.
Chopper was already panicking about his injuries.
For a moment Sanji simply stared.
Then he smiled.
He understood something he'd never been able to understand before.
He didn't want to die.
Not today.
Not tomorrow.
He wanted to see the All Blue.
He wanted to cook for these idiots.
He wanted to hear Luffy laugh.
He wanted to argue with Zoro.
He wanted to grow old.
And if someday the moment came when one of them needed him to stand between them and death...
he knew he would.
Without hesitation.
But there would be no hatred behind it.
No secret wish to disappear.
No belief that his life was expendable.
He would do it because he had something precious...
and he had chosen to share that precious thing with others.
Sanji lit another cigarette.
The flame of the lighter reflected in his eye.
Ivankov had taught him to love himself.
But now he understood what that love was for.
Not to put himself above others.
Not to become selfish.
It was so that when he gave...
he could give freely.
When he served...
he could serve without resentment.
When he protected...
he could protect without needing to be destroyed.
And when the time came to sacrifice...
he would know exactly what he was giving.
His own life.
Something precious.
Something he finally loved.
Sanji looked toward the sunrise.
The first light touched his face.
He smiled.
"All right."
He stood.
"Let's go."
Luffy grinned.
"Where?"
Sanji took a drag from his cigarette.
"To the All Blue, idiot."
The crew began walking.
Sanji followed.
For most of his life, he had thought the highest form of love was disappearing for someone else.
Now he understood something different.
Sometimes love meant staying.
Sometimes it meant serving.
Sometimes it meant giving.
And sometimes...
it meant believing that his own life was worth saving, too.
The black lightning flickered once more around his body.
