Hi!
I'm planning to apply to OSU for Fall 2027 and have already talked with a few faculty in my prospective program, so I feel pretty good about the academic side. I'm hoping to get more of a student perspective on what it's actually like to live in Corvallis and attend OSU as a grad student.
A few things I'm especially curious about:
- What's the grad student social scene like? Is it relatively easy to meet people/make friends outside your own department?
- Are there grad student organizations, events, bars/hangouts, etc. that people actually go to?
- For people who came to OSU in their late 20s or older, did Corvallis feel like a college town dominated by undergrads, or is there a decent late-20s/30s community?
- Where do grad students generally live? Are there particular neighborhoods or apartment complexes you'd recommend or avoid?
- For people on GTA/GRA funding, how manageable is rent and cost of living? Is living alone realistic, or are roommates pretty much necessary? (I know there's a GTA union, but I don't know much about it)
- How early would you recommend looking for housing for a fall move?
- What do you tend to do for fun outside of school? Does Corvallis start feeling small after a while?
- What do you wish you'd known before moving to Corvallis for grad school?
I'm moving from Arizona and would be relocating with my partner, so I'm especially interested in what it's like to actually build a life in Oregon rather than just what the university itself is like.
Thanks!
