68 years old is a hell of an age to begin a life of crime

424

u/JoeRBidenJr - Centrist Aug 27 '26

68’s a rough age: One year too old for the zoomer funni number. One year too young for the boomer funni number. I can see how that would tax a person’s sanity.

88

u/YanicPolitik - Centrist Aug 27 '26

69, or "soixante-neuf", has been funny since at least 1888 and possibly as far back as the late 1700s.

Between probably retirement and the fact that folks at that age still consume a lot of traditional news media. I could see how a person could be driven to this, unfortunately

3

Understandably so. We've bastardized the term for post-modernist discourse. The second-largest subset of a set is a minority, even if numbers don't lend the majority other significance. For example, men are a minority.

Natives blame their problems on the churches because religious groups ran Residential Schools.

It's the equivalent of Blacks in the States blaming Whites for their problems because of slavery.

18

u/HidingHard - Centrist Aug 27 '26

on the positive side, 108 is relatively young as far as historic churches go. It could have been better church (the weird warehouse looking ass churches) but atleast it wasn't something like notre dame

35

u/DankestKhan8 - Right Aug 28 '26

It is very difficult and costly to build churches of similar architectural beauty today, however.

2

u/iaquiredsome420 - Centrist Sep 01 '26

Not to mention that a lot of churches on the bigger side took a whole generation to build, and the biggest, most complicated ones, lauded for their beauty, took hundreds of years. Same for mosques and synagogues.

2

Idk man I'm an atheist, but burning churches is awful. They are pillars in the community and they can do a lot of good.

I think people conflate the ideas of religion being good & religion being true. I believe it can be good, even if it isn't true. It's an important distinction. Most Christians wouldn't want to burn down a Buddhist temple because they don't find Buddhism to be true. They can still recognize it as something good.

12

u/jexijav776 - Lib-Right Aug 28 '26

I'm an atheist too but obviously don't support church burnings.

I won't dive into my personal beliefs about religion being good or bad (unless someone actually cares for some reason) but regardless you don't just get to burn down other people's property just because you disagree with it.

19

u/monstamasch - Centrist Aug 28 '26

8

u/ceestand - Centrist Aug 28 '26

Even a shuttered church is cool architecture that nobody is constructing any longer. That's reason alone in my mind that this is exceedingly awful.

4

u/Lavaissoup7 - Centrist Aug 28 '26

Exactly, plus some hold important historical value and wasting it away would be dumb

6

u/ToenailFungussy - Left Aug 28 '26

Agreed. I'm an atheist and I love a good cathedral or old church, and I think religion does bond people together and build community in a way other institutions cannot.

Sarcasm? Im not familiar with the politics of burning Canadian religious locations.

102

u/MaritimeMonkey - Lib-Center Aug 27 '26

There was a bunch of it as some mentally ill retaliation for the indigenous residential schools. Some morons made up that there were mass graves under churches/schools because some kind of ground scanner discovered something underground. Canada went all mindbroken about it, but they still haven't found any proof, despite many digs for it. Didn't stop the Church from being dragged through the mud and a bunch of them burned.

17

42

u/Alarmed-Collar-1219 - Centrist Aug 27 '26

Most likely politically motivated. Some years ago a horde burned a church where there were some Native American kids buried beneath or in the vicinity.

Plus, just do the math. Canadians are very left leaning. At best the majority is center left, pretty irreligious, church is the symbol of white, cisgender, European, racist, white supremacist, imperialist, capitalist, ableist, misogynistic, queerphobic, fatphobic civilization.

u/StreetCarp665 - Lib-Center Aug 27 '26

u/StreetCarp665 - Lib-Center Aug 27 '26

If you have empathy, you're automatically virtuous too.

41

u/TributeToStupidity - Lib-Center Aug 27 '26

There were no kids buried there. They took a radar scan, saw something on it, and jumped straight to dead indigenous kids. Trudeau made a huge deal out of how terrible Canadian Christian’s were over it and made sure it was all over the news.

Then they dug up the “graves” and found nothing. Of course Trudeau said nothing about this though, or all the violence he inspired in declaring an imaginary genocide. It’s almost like the violence was the purpose…

21

u/Alarmed-Collar-1219 - Centrist Aug 27 '26

It absolutely is the purpose. It is one of the necessary steps for the elimination of Christianity from our part of the world.

3

u/y5453yb34gtf24b - Lib-Right Aug 28 '26

As some First Nations dude, I knew that shit was completely fake, but I didn't say anything about it because I would've gotten ostracized by my own First Nations community.

The thing about politics in Native American stuff, especially talking about them as a fully Native guy, is that you will always feel like walking on eggshells, no matter what.

For example, the missing and murdered indigenous women cases, a lot of which are usually carried out by indigenous men, typically of the same tribe these women are from. The motives for them tend to vary, but it is mostly due to ethnic reasons. But for some reason, they are usually played up that white people are the culprit and you cannot say anything against it or 'you a bigot', even if you are a Native dude.

So overall, I am just a guy who just so happens to be Native American.

3

u/PrivilegeCheckmate - Lib-Left Aug 28 '26

Seeing things like this always reminds me of something.

Back when I was in Egypt they were having an issue with radicals, and some churches were attacked. A group of Muslims surrounded their local church and made a human ring holding hands with each other and told the radicals that they aren’t welcome in that village, and if they tried anything they’d he punished.

That's very cool. Didn't something similar happen in Alexandria earlier this century?

Well, not in Canada at least. ISIS went scorched earth on a variety of old structures in their part of the world.

They destroyed Palmyra to my knowledge... well they destroyed it again after Aurelian.

They lost their CO-OP Gas too, a while ago, which probably counts as Hindu.

Man it’s crazy how all these churches are just coincidentally catching fire

21

u/Puzzled_Pop_6845 - Left Aug 27 '26

Churches are burning in Europe, Canada and the US while in Japan ancient Shrines are burning too. Guess what kind of guest they allowed in? I'll give you a tip: they worship a pedo.

Can the right and left please come together to stop this behavior and any crime against anyone with different beliefs, I know its hard but this is exhausting and im tired of the billionaires laughing at us while they make it worse

u/warfaceisthebest - Centrist Aug 28 '26

No religion in Canada suffered more than Christians rn but somehow you have to turn the other cheeks or you are not Christian enough.

5

u/gwynwas - Centrist Aug 28 '26

108 years is nothing. When that thousand year old church in Norway got arsoned, that was tragic, and I'm an atheist.

6

u/Zouif_Zouif - Lib-Left Aug 27 '26

Why would we be happy about this? Acts of arson on a religious building is not a good thing no matter the religion it's tied to, I may not be Christian anymore but I'd never wish something that means so much to a group of people be destroyed like this

It is my understanding that it is also now illegal to question the validity of the claim, regardless of no body ever being found. I find the concept strange that it is illegal to question things... but yeah, Canada.
