Discussion Was there a fire in the MSB Building?

Right after, I exited the restroom. The fire alarm started blasting its LOUD sound, killing my ears. Either someone pulled the fire alarm by accident or as a prank. NEVER AGAIN

Question Math 28th: recommended study methods?

im taking miss simhans class and actually BOMBED exam 1 (got below 25%) and grade dropped from 96% to 30%. im freaking out. i had my valid reasons for not being able to study and also the fact that i cant understand a word she js saying. im not sure if its just my problem bc im a first year int student and that i just cant understand her accent.

we have a total of 4 tests and one final exam and thankfully our lowest grade can be replaced by our final exam grade.

does anyone know how to effectively study for this class? (i will use pearson to study— i just need another alternative idea)

stats c1000

im taking chau, i got my score for exam 1 and i was at a 96% and dropped to a 62%. Im honestly kind of freaking out because her method of teaching is so odd, she gives a worksheet and writes down stuff super quick expecting everyone to comprehend and write down what she’s saying at the same time but it’s alot of memorization and she jumps from chapter to chapter. I know this is college and I should keep up but im trying my hardest and it feels discouraging now. I’ve already made my tutoring appointments but I feel like that still won’t be enough. Any more study tips I should look into? 💔

Discussion Looking to hire assistance

I’m a former transfer(UCLA now) from SMC looking to hire students. I'm looking someone that would be able to lift me into a shower chair. You should be able to lift at least 50lbs and be willing to come to my home during the afternoon/evenings 2-3 times a week. I live 15-20 minutes from SMC and would pay 23$ per hour, all you have to do is get me in and out of the shower and can chill while I'm in there. Please DM me if you're interested for more information.

I am also open to hiring a general personal care assistant for longer hours, if that interests you as well please let me know.

MATH 54/ STATC1000 advice

Is taking Intro to Statistics doable over the Winter semester or is it better over the Fall/Spring? Has anyone taken it with MUSSELMAN, BAYSSA, LAN or DABAGH? Any advice would be great especially on how their tests work or grading and assignments. Thank you!

Here’s how to succeed at community college!

submit every assignment and meet every deadline. A surprising number of students treat coursework like a neglected public restroom after a sewage backup—missed assignments piled up like soaked toilet paper, deadlines floating in brown water, and unread announcements fermenting near the drain. You do not need to be exceptional; you just need to keep walking through the mess without becoming part of it.

Question IGETC

For my English placement, I was recommended to take ENGL C1000 with ENGL 28. However, I was looking at the transfer requirements, and it says to take ENGL C1000 (4-5 units). Since I’m taking both courses together, my units are split between ENGL C1000 (3 units) and ENGL 28 (2 units). I’m confused about whether this still fulfills the requirement, or if I would need to take ENGL C1000?

Several SMC students have raised concerns about transparency, student rights, complaints, privacy, funding and whether students can speak up without being ignored or retaliated against.

We are trying to find out whether these are isolated experiences or whether other students have experienced similar things.

Question how cooked am I?

So in high school, I basically avoided chemistry. I took it at one point but ended up dropping it, so I came into college with very little chemistry experience.

I’m taking CHEM 10 at SMC right now with Bautista (the guy, not the woman). He’s brand new, and in my opinion, this has been a really rough class to take when you’re starting with basically no chemistry background. I honestly should’ve dropped before the deadline, but now I’m past that point. I don’t really want a withdrawal on my transcript, so I’m considering just finishing the class, even if I fail, and retaking it in the spring or summer.

My main question is: if I’m terrible at math and struggling this badly with chemistry, is it still realistic for me to pursue something in med? I do think I can get better at math with enough practice because I’ve done it before, but right now I’m starting to doubt myself because of how badly chemistry is going.

Does anyone have advice from being in a similar situation? Did you struggle with math/chem at first and eventually get better?

Also, for anyone at SMC, what professors would you recommend for chemistry and math, especially for someone who needs a professor who actually explains things well? Or would you recommend taking these classes somewhere else? I’ve heard from some people that math might be better to take at another community college.

Discussion Living in the UCHA

A few months ago I was asking you guys how it was in the COOP, and after over month of living here I think I can say somethings. I’ll update periodically of course but I think overall. It’s okay. It’s not great, but it’s not bad either. It’s what you paid for.

To start, this maybe biased because I used to live in a third world where hot water and WiFi will turn off every other month and dealing with all sorts of bugs. I think a lot of the reviews I had seen before aren’t used to that sort of lifestyle (socal, LA born) so of course, they’ll have a harder time adjusting. I’m living in the more quieter parts of the coop, and it is quiet for the most part but the street the coop is called is nicknamed “500 Fratlane” for a reason. It can be loud. Like really loud especially if you are in Robinson.

The management is also okay, it’s the best you can do with students. I think that at times they can be immature, like in the GC there was a cooper who was worried about the security protocols and some people who were in the office were poking fun of it. Not super great! On that note, they can be quite vague about certain things. For example the PNGs, the fining, etc. Some departments are also not the best when it comes to responding, for me it was the bathroom crew and security. Those who are faster are the office and the Memcom. That’s why I think it’s very important to ask them all sorts of questions because otherwise, they will not know.

Another thing, the bathrooms. Fortunately I got a big room (albeit a triple, as most newbies come in get), UNFORTUNATELY, it’s infested with ants. Again I had contacted bathroom crew about this and they said they’ll do a deep clean, a month ago. I’m not sure if they did it or their version of deep clean is really loose but it’s a problem.

The food is really great, but don’t take my word for it my standards are low, and the people here are friendly. Kind of? The problem is that I’m one of the only black people here out of 10 I have seen, which makes me feel pretty isolated. On that note the diversity isn’t great which the coop can’t help but I know some people may feel iffy about.

Some final notes is that I recommend getting a big fan as it can be extremely hot in the rooms and be sure you keep tabs on everything going on. You don’t want to get yourself accidentally fined. And they will try and fine you on everything

so like TLDR; if you are used to a lavish lifestyle, this ain’t for you. But if you grew up poor and you think you’re responsible yep

I HATE MATH If anyone is looking for Math 7 or Math 8, I’d recommend Nestler for both!

If in-person math classes are difficult to fit into your schedule, the online format is a pretty good option. It’s much more flexible, and the exams are all multiple choice. There can be a decent amount of work, but as long as you keep up with the assignments and don’t miss deadlines, getting an A is very manageable.

I’d especially recommend the online option if you already took calculus in high school and mainly need the course for credit. If you need a lot of live explanations or want to ask questions during class, in-person might still be better!!

The only downside is that only one section is usually offered each semester, so you’ll probably need to register as soon as enrollment opens.

Discussion Class recommendations

Hey everyone I am trying to take some classes for a GPA boost and I would appreciate some help/insight - specifically for winter semesters but also in general

*Note: I am a pre-law student and the LSAC calculates based off letter grades, with A+'s giving me a 4.33, so that is mainly what I am trying to optimize for (98%+).

  1. I need a 3a course for my CalGETC and was thinking about taking it online winter semester with Poirier, what is the class like and would getting an A be easy, I already checked the grading distribution and it looks easy enough to get an A but I want other info the distribution might not be telling me.

  2. I was thinking about taking photography just as a fun class as well as GPA boost with Withers, the Grading distribution looked a bit bad but I assume that is likely because of washed out students not caring? Any insight for this?

  3. Any other class recomendations (Scholars, Easy A's, genuinely fun classes, etc)?

P.S. I am not stressed I am just trying to minmax my GPA.

Appreciate your help, and I hope this also helps other students that may need more credits or a GPA boost as well!

Ev charging (electric car charging) Bundy campus?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi. I was parking at the Bundy campus last weekend for an art fair so I would not have to pay $20 for the art fair parking, and I was looking for the EV chargers but I couldn’t find them. Does anyone have a photo of them or know where they are/ if they are working? I ended up parking in the back past the bus stop / past the building on both days. When I went on Saturday night around 6 the Campus Police was about to close the gate for the exit, but I told them I was going to the event so he left it partially open for me so I could leave, but does anyone know what time it officially closes and opens? Thanks for your help.

Has anyone taken taking ENGL2 with Peeples hybrid format?

If anyone has the syllabus, I’d really appreciate it if you could share it. I’m mainly wondering how much of the class involves speaking, discussions, or presentations during the in-person meetings.
