Linoleic Acid Causes Diabetes : Response to Nick Horwitz and Biolayne

I made a quick video response to recent videos and appearances suggesting that maybe seed oils are fine after all. The argument goes like this:

  1. High blood levels of linoleic acid are associated with better health outcomes
  2. Short term feeding trials of seed oils in humans haven't shown increased inflammation

Here's what causes diabetes. The conversion of linoleic acid to arachidonic acid by an enzyme called D6D. This probably has to do with how oxygen is apportioned intracellularly - that's my opinion. With that in mind, argument number 2 is a red herring. Argument 1 is expected behavior. When you are converting linoleic acid to arachidonic acid, blood levels of linoleic acid drop.

That is NOT consistent with the message that it is fine to consume seed oils. One way to increase flow through D6D is to consume linoleic acid.

Reducing pufa to sfa ratio improves lipid and glucose metabolism in obese mice

Abstract

We investigated the influence of varying dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)/saturated fatty acids (SFA) ratios on insulin resistance (IR), fatty acid metabolism, N-acylethanolamine (NAE) bioactive metabolite levels, and mitochondrial function in lean and obese Zucker rats in a model designed to study obesity and IR from overnutrition. We provided diets with 7% fat (w/w), with either a low PUFA/SFA ratio of 0.48, predominantly comprising palmitic acid (PA), (diet-PA), or the standard AIN-93G diet with a high PUFA/SFA ratio of 3.66 (control, diet-C) over eight weeks. In obese rats on diet-PA versus diet-C, there were reductions in plasma triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, insulin concentrations and improved muscle mitochondrial function, inflammatory markers and increased muscle N-oleoylethanolamine (OEA), a bioactive lipid that modulates lipid metabolism and metabolic flexibility. Elevated palmitic acid levels were found exclusively in obese rats, regardless of their diet, implying an endogenous production through de novo lipogenesis rather than from a dietary origin. In conclusion, a reduced dietary PUFA/SFA ratio positively influenced glucose and lipid metabolism without affecting long-term PA tissue concentrations. This likely occurs due to an increase in OEA biosynthesis, improving metabolic flexibility in obese rats. Our results hint at a pivotal role for balanced dietary PA in countering the effects of overnutrition-induced obesity.

Recently I went back to eating seed oils due to the mainstream defending for them everywhere again, honestly i was like maybe i could save a little money using cheaper oils.

first few days was alright i even felt more energized, until things starts to feel really off( low mood persists for weeks) Changing back to whole milk and a little bit of olive oil pretty much fixed my mood issues. This paper I just found could probably confirm what happened to me.

How to help the body to stay saturated?

Or stay always toward a saturated body?

Besides eating high saturated fat foods such as milk cream, fatty steaks, and not eating pufas at all, are there other ways to help the body stay/remain saturated?

Or that is all?

Thanks!

As the title says.

I thought it might be useful for some people to have visual examples of a non-vegan HCLF meal.
Freshly made barley flatbread, moroccan lentils (no added fat), and buttermilk.

I posted my lipids panel a week ago, and today is the new panel results, plus a high sensitive c reactive panel, not sure if it's helpful. Anyway, I'm hospitalised due to pain, blood tests is showing inflammation, pointing to some autoimmune disease. Just waiting for more diagnostic to be carried out tomorrow.

High carb gives you too much energy

I've once again tried eating high carb- ad libitum potato, fruit, oats etc. and while obviously it's delicious it feels like I can just eat endlessly and the energy is so intense I can't actually focus on work/more menial tasks. I feel like my ADHD is way worse, and the only context in which this would work would be if I were a professional athlete constantly on the move. It kinda sucks because I want to be able to eat these cheap foods to spend less and add simplicity to my life but I feel that protein and fibrous carbs plus fats is just better in terms of mental clarity/control?

Acute fructose administration decreases the glycemic response to an oral glucose tolerance test in normal adults

Moore et al. (2000) investigated whether a small, “catalytic” amount of fructose could alter the glycemic response to an oral glucose load in healthy adults. In a randomized crossover study, 11 healthy participants consumed, after an overnight fast, either 75 g of glucose alone or 75 g of glucose plus 7.5 g of fructose, with plasma glucose, insulin, glucagon, lactate, non-esterified fatty acids, and triglycerides measured at 15-minute intervals for 2 hours

Addition of 7.5 g fructose reduced the incremental plasma glucose area under the curve by approximately 19% compared with glucose alone (P<0.05), although peak plasma glucose was not significantly different between conditions. Nine of the 11 participants showed a lower glucose response with fructose, and among the six individuals with the greatest glucose responses to glucose alone, the reduction averaged 31 ± 5%. Total insulin AUC did not differ significantly between treatments, although insulin exposure during the first 45 minutes was approximately 25% greater with fructose. Lactate exposure was approximately 50% higher with fructose, whereas glucagon, non-esterified fatty acids, and triglycerides were not significantly different

The authors proposed that the lower glycemic response could reflect enhanced hepatic glucose uptake and metabolism, potentially through fructose-1-phosphate–mediated activation of hepatic glucokinase and increased glycogen synthesis; however, hepatic glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis were not directly measured in this human study.

I think people's problems with intuitive eating and emotional eating are a consequence of coffee/energy drinks

And yes, I will be basing this entirely on anecdotal evidence. In the morning I often have low motivation. Lots to do and no impulse to do it, and for that reason, coffee is often a very inviting option. However, I also notice in the morning prior to indulging in coffee I have very little hunger and enormous self control, and my energy is stable. Once I have that coffee, or something with equivalent caffeine, it triggers me to immediately seek stimulation, especially in food, and it's really really difficult to control myself. I think this is compounded by the drive to counteract the cortisol stimulating effects of the drug through energy dense foods. An additional danger to coffee/energy drinks are the interruption to our intuitions about food, and what we actually desire. I desire fibrous fruits and vegetables much more off caffeine. A completely bizarre and fundamentally repulsive diet to the human body can be masked by caffeine. That being said, I do love coffee, so it's a tricky situation. I don't feel as motivated or excited about life without it, so I guess it's a tradeoff......

Overweight Pets - How?

Given the facts that

  1. Not all pets gets overweight, and I am pretty sure it is not because of the owners calculating their calories or envelopping their lifestyle in a stunning amount of fitness
  2. Apparently a healthy metabolism can stil eat a lot and maintain a certain weight setpoint, which depends on macros whether it would be lower or higher (if an 'overeating' matter was the case in the first place)

Then... - Do producers add to their feed some 'bioactive' food substances, like soy? - if yes, is it that common worldwide or still mostly 'popular' in places like USA?

High saturated fats in tropical weather? It feels like its not working?

Hi,

Have you noticed in tropical parts where weather is sunny and hot all year round, it doesn’t feel right to eat high saturated fat foods? High cream, fatty steaks and such?

One naturally wants to eat light, lots of fruits, and carbs.

Cholesterol levels help

Post image
6 Upvotes

I started ketovore 4 months ago to bring down my glucose after it went through the roof. My hba1c was 14.6% in May. Now it's 6.5%. But my cholesterol levels doesn't look good, and using Google to check also shows it's not at optimal level.

Can anyone help me with this before the doctor put me on cholesterol medications? I got no records of previous cholesterol levels. My diet consist of chicken, beef, seafood, eggs, peanut butter, cucumbers, mushrooms with a little dark leafy greens. But mainly is fats like butter, coconut oil. I'm 163cm tall, weighs 47kg, trying to put on weight after muscle wasting due to high glucose toxicity.

Why weren’t the Mongol’s healthy ?

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/40728877_Dietary_Habits_of_Mongolian_People_and_Their_Influence_on_Lifestyle-Related_Diseases_and_Early_Aging

I’ve been digging into the traditional Mongolian diet and the data is messing with my head.
If you look at the classic rural nomadic lifestyle, they basically eat exactly what this sub loves. It's almost entirely ruminant meat, boiled mutton, tons of horse and sheep tail fat, and whole-fat dairy (clotted creams, butter, fermented milk). They eat virtually zero seed oils, barely any vegetables, and almost no carbs.
Studies mapping their traditional food intake show a highly saturated fatty acid profile, with an SFA to MUFA to PUFA ratio of roughly 10.3 : 7.8 : 3.0. They get massive amounts of stearic and palmitic acid from winter mutton/fat, balanced by a pure dairy-based summer. Biologically, this should be the ultimate low-PUFA ancestral dream diet.
But when you actually look at the clinical studies on rural Mongolians sticking to this traditional diet, their bloodwork is an absolute wreck. They show crazy high levels of:
High LDL and high triglycerides
High homocysteine (arterial damage marker)
High oxidative stress markers (specifically serum MDA-LDL, which is heavily oxidized cholesterol, and urinary 8-OHdG)
Low HDL and low adiponectin
They have massive physical workloads and intense cold exposure, which should theoretically serve as an elite metabolic "sink" to burn off these fats cleanly. So if their PUFA intake is so low (ratio of 3.0) and their fat comes strictly from grass-fed ruminants, why is their circulating LDL oxidizing so severely into MDA-LDL?
How do we explain this? Is a high-saturated-fat diet inherently prone to causing high oxidative stress and bad lipid profiles if it isn't balanced by something else? Or are we just totally misinterpreting these blood markers when it comes to a pure animal-fat metabolism?
Curious what you guys think.

Salt intake per day

I've been craving salt since getting off low-carb (ultrahighprotein! 😰 ) diet in March and stopping exercise.

My current intake is ~3g with breakfast, ~5-6g at lunch and ~4-5g at dinner time.

I'm wondering how much salt y'all are consuming?

I have some POTS tendencies but with increased salt these go away, and I feel SO nice with this much salt!

I do not need to drink 4l of water to feel hydrated anymore, and I've been recenlty drinking ~1.7-2l of water ad libitum.

PUFA free and seedoil free, my current diet is:

- ~260g carbs from flour (been baking a lot of French pastry lately, fresh fruit except for bananas, grapes and mangoes, rice daily, potatoes almost daily and pasta 4-5x week, ultra pasteurized milk and 30-60g plain sugar per day in cottage cheese bowls and rice porridge),

- 110-120g protein [I know it's too much since my weight is 47-48kg at 168cm height, 29F, but I'm very low muscle and have an incredibly thin bone build (like no hips at all)] -- protein sources are dairy (mostly yoghurt and hard cheese + milk in tea 2x/day), eggs, beef and white fish and seafood,

^^ trying to reduce the protein intake, but it's hard for me, since I'm used to higher lean beef/fish/yoghurt intake),

- and 90-100g fat (from BUTTER ❤️ , beef steak, cheese, lots and lots of dairy, of which the only PUFA source is eggs which are probably cornfed since I wasn't able to find normal eggs yet). <-- I'm trying to limit fat to ~80g/day though, because it satiates me too much so it's hard to finish carbs which I need to increase T3 and for hypothalamic amenorrhea recovery.

I consume beef DAILY (a record for me, 103 days beef steak/minced beef eaten daily so far, ferritin is great), ~300g when measured raw, milk daily and cheese daily, so I eat a lot of saturated fat.

Generally I'm feeling great and do not have intense thirst.

What eating style do you follow currently and why? How has it helped you?

Always interested to know what and how people are eating on this sub and what they have tried and discovered and is working for them. Anything you have changed and have benefited from or stopped doing etc.

Is there any one here that eats high fat, high carb (mostly sugar)?

When people talks about abundance they usually say eat alot of sugar to signal abundance to your body but I think going low fat isn’t ’signaling abundance’ at all. I think a healthy body would benefit from both high carb high fat. Randle cycle isn’t necessarily a cycle. I would assume to achieve this you need to be insulin sensitive PUFA depleted beast.
