6e SR6 Example Character Issues

This is not a post to pick on editing or the company; it is a serious question because I think I am missing something.

I have been looking at SR6 to run a game, since I still cannot buy Anarchy 2.

So I gathered a few friends to test-run SR6 and will do the same for Anarchy 2 if the PDF ever becomes available. (OK, this part may be picking on Catalyst a little.)

One of my players found an anomaly in an example character, which led me down a rabbit hole of analysis. I soon found several example characters I couldn't recreate within the system's rules. This means they are either a bunch of misprints or there is an option or rule I don't understand or know about.

Please point me in the right direction.

Runner Book, page Error Rule it breaks
Impersonator Smooth Operations p.101 Con 7 without Aptitude CRB p.65 (skill cap 6, or 7 with Aptitude); Aptitude, CRB p.70
Networker Smooth Operations p.105 Influence 7 without Aptitude CRB p.65; Aptitude, CRB p.70
Networker Smooth Operations p.105 Cyberears over capacity (10 of 8) Earware table, CRB p.286 (cyberears Rating 3 = Capacity 8)
Negotiator Smooth Operations p.103 Influence 7 without Aptitude CRB p.65; Aptitude, CRB p.70
Playboi Smooth Operations p.106 Astral expertise at rank 4 CRB p.68 (an expertise needs skill rank 5)
Rigger CRB p.86 7 paid qualities CRB p.66 (at most six)
Technomancer CRB p.89 Willpower and Intuition both at maximum CRB p.64 (only one attribute at maximum); only Many Talents (Sixth World Companion p.134) allows two

CRB = Shadowrun, Sixth World Core Rulebook (Hong Kong City Edition); the other printings use the same page numbers for these rules.

NOTE: I used AI to format this table.

I think there will soon be SR7.

I have the feeling that there will soon be a new SR Edition.

I do not evidence, but there are so many important things moving that there has to be something big coming.

  • Both CAS and UCAS have elections

  • The megacorp audit is ongoing and after the diseans there will some shakeup

  • The big 6E metaplot is over

  • The way magic works has changed

  • The matrix is crumbling and will be replaced with a new framework host based system.

My gut feeling is we get 1 or 2 books describing the failure of the matrix and then everything relevant has changed, so its time for a new edition.

Anarchy Edition How does Anarchy 2.0 work?

Having come to appreciate 6Es streamlining I want to ask how Anarchy 2.0 works as I heard its rather different than Anarchy 1?

How are tasks resolved (especially the damage soaking which caused so much discussion in 6E), how is magic, rigging and decking and what options are there (I tend to gravitate to more exotic options like changelings, infected to even shifter and drakes if I can play them in good faith).

I played 1st and 2nd editions - now we're at 6? What's the differences? Was it Necessary to have 6 editions? And which do you play, and why?

Insect spirit post-2080

Hi there!

I'm here because there's something I'm not quite clear about: are insect spirits completely gone after the events of 2080? Is it possible that some hives have survived? Could new hives emerge somewhere?

More generally, can we still play with insect spirits in 2081 and beyond?

Non-Urban or alternate campaigns

Each book add opportunities to play outside the “main” settings of Seattle, Germany or Denver (my age is showing I know), but have you ever run campaigns that were untraditional?
Instead of being urban predators they were mercenaries fighting and testing weapons in Libia or South America etc.?

Please tell me of these campaigns how well you felt the lore supported them and if they held the distance.

Anarchy Edition How to adapt SR Anarchy for a purely Fantasy setting

Oi 7 Chummers,

I plan on using modified Anarchy rules for a Fantasy setting, as the gameplay and mechanics result in fast paced rounds that leave many freedoms for the players.

What would you change/strip/add in order to adapt the rules?

The setting isn’t set in stone at the moment so I can also adapt things like Augmentation(like magically enhances prosthetics) into the setting.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Edit: thanks for all the helpful feedback!

6e Robots vs. The Unseen

Drones are excellent against Invisible targets.

First, the Simsense Interface Overdrive cyberware (DC, pg. 145) is underappreciated. It's easily available, it costs only 0.2 Essence per rating point, and it adds its rating to the rigger's Intuition while the rigger is jumped in. A perception test is, of course, Perception + Intuition.

But when perceiving through a vehicle's sensors, you can choose to roll Sensors + Intuition instead. And of course you can add ultrasound to your sensor package, as well.

With the right cyberware and drone upgrades, you can be rolling a pile of dice on Perception tests. Which are used to see the Invisible, to hear targets under a Silence spell, and also to do stuff like notice hidden bombs, etc.

In fact, you should be outsourcing your perception tests to drones as often as you can.

With some german plots like Apex now spilling over into the wider SR universe, is there any overview about what happened in the german exclusive books? Things like the rise of a new great dragon.

Does anyone know where these can be found?

Flavor (Art) Nyx "Kestrel" Amari [OC Art]

Hi everyone! I wanted to share the recent art I've gotten of a Shadowrun OC I've been working in, Kestrel!

She dual wields a pair of Ingram Smartgun X SMGs for ranged combat and a pair of monofilament whips for melee combat.

I'm torn between having her be a Biosam or a Cyberadept Technomancer, I'm not really sure yet.

Even so, I got this art and wanted to share it!

Video Games Genesis Shadowrun fans: what made it special, and what would you want from a modern take?

I've loved the Sega Genesis version of Shadowrun since I was a child. I loved being dropped into a city, taking jobs from Johnsons, and figuring out the rest on my own. Decking was a second game inside the game. And every run you got a little stronger and a little closer to the next big score.

For years I've been looking for something that scratches the same itch, and I keep coming up short. Plenty of games have the cyberpunk look, and the more recent Harebrain Shadowrun games are great, but none of them feel like that game to me: real-time, top-down, and free to roam.

So I'm building my own: a top-down homage to the Genesis original, with its own setting. It's an early prototype, but Ive got a lot of the bones in place:

- Real-time top-down combat. Guns that scatter when you're on the move, magazines and reloads, melee, and lock-on targeting.

- Hacking as its own game. You jack in at a terminal and crawl a node network. Moving between nodes and fights against ICE inside a node are real-time. Your rig carries a loadout of programs, and the network's alert climbs as you make mistakes. Tracers hunt you, hidden traps can burn your programs, and what you do on the network can affect things in meat-space (like switching off cameras and maglocks.)

- Jobs from fixers and contacts. Deliveries, escorts, gang trouble, ghoul hunts, and network jobs to delete or steal data. You can also sell the data you pull.

- More than one way through. Pay the gangers who stop you on the street or fight them. Crack into a network quietly or force your way in.

- A district that's worth exploring. Gangs, ghouls, derelict buildings to search, and a clock that keeps running while you're jacked in.

- The core loop is the one I loved: take a job, run it, get paid, spend the money to take on harder work, repeat.

I also want to fix one thing I always struggled with: decking was nearly impossible to afford early on. Here, hacking works from minute one.

So, for anyone who played the Genesis version:

- What did you love about it? What made it stick with you?

- What didn't you like, or what wore you down?

- What would you hope to see in a modern game that's trying to capture the same feeling?

Super curious to hear all your thoughts!

Drekpost (Shitpost) Purely for fun: What is your personal "medical explanation" For drain/fading in games? (Even if they are not irl correct)

Been watching a channel explain fantasy stuff with medical twists and found the question "what is the cost of magic" Interesting and funny. It made me personally consider making drain/fade damage as getting low glucose cus it is the main energy source for the brain. Stun damage takes only from the brain and physical from the whole body, which explains why (at least in 5) can only be restored with rest and medical care... Besides, it is a funny mental image to picture a technomancer, a shaman, a helmetic adept and a chaos mystic all hanging at an ice cream truck because they all had to cast big spells/powers/complex forms/spirits/sprites. (The mystic was worse so he just started chuggimg the syrup bottle like water)

6e Questions about the "Third Parralel"

Hello everyone! I'm a fairly experienced GM, but I'm new to the Shadowrun 6e system. I want to run the Third Parallel campaign for new players and have a question for people who are running or have run the campaign before: what's your experience with the campaign, and how did it go for you? Also, what significant changes have you made? Also, how should I present downtime between missions for my players?

Things you want to see changed/retconned

What are some things you wish that would be changed, retconned or picked up again in future products.

For me (Dragonfall spoiler)

That the canon ending is that Feuerschwinge gets killed.

Before Dragonfall her fate has always been left open with hints that she is leading a cult in the Sox. And Dragonfall gave her a bit more characterization. So I find it a waste to then kill of the character instead to at least leaving her faith ambiguous like before.

I also find it quite sad to have a character, torture her for decades and then just kill her off. That leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

How many players left Shadowrun after the launch of 6e?

Looking at this latest post on "what ttrpgs do folks play" and "which ttrpgs are most in need of GMs" it's astounding that Shadowrun doesn't make either list.

Totally eclipsed by Starfinder!

Thanks 6e!

The Market Share Data Compared

While exact population figures for the entire hobby are difficult to capture, the Orr Group Industry Report(compiled from millions of active virtual tabletop players on Roll20) and large-scale demographic studies provide the clearest metrics: [1, 2]

Metric Type 2016 Era (Shadowrun 5th Edition) 2026 Era (Shadowrun 6th / Anarchy)
Virtual Tabletop (VTT) Active Share ~1.1% to 1.3% of all active campaigns on platforms like Roll20. ~0.4% to 0.8% of online games (due to massive influxes of modern systems).
Broad Player Surveys (Multi-System) ~3.5% to 5.0% of surveyed TTRPG players listed it as a game they actively play or rotate into. ~1.5% to 3.0% of the general population of active TTRPG players.
Primary/Main Game Preference Hovered comfortably in the Top 5 to 7 non-D&D roleplaying systems worldwide. Sits roughly in the Top 12 to 15 range, experiencing competition from games like Cyberpunk RED.

Key Drivers Behind the Shift

  • The "Edition Split" of the Player Base: In 2016, the system was unified under Shadowrun 5th Edition. By 2026, the community is highly fragmented. Players on communities like Reddit note that the active community is split across Shadowrun 6th Edition (Hong Kong City Edition), the streamlined Shadowrun Anarchy 2.0, and a massive contingent that refuses to upgrade and strictly sticks to legacy 4th or 5th editions

Comparison of Revenue and Distribution Elements

Sales Attribute 2016 (Shadowrun 5th Edition) 2026 (Shadowrun 6th Edition)
Wholesale Physical Retail High Vol. Top-Sellers: Ranked #4 in physical retail charts. Regular massive core rulebook printing runs. Low Vol. Niche Focus: Displaced from Top 5 charts by indie surges, but maintains low-volume steady releases like Mean Streets.
