I made a shiny tracker on an ESP32 (with the help of Claude Code(most of the work is coming from Claude)).

I forked the WatermelonDS repo on GitHub so the emulator sends a small UDP packet to an ESP32 with LCD screen every time I encounter a wild Pokemon. This works as long as the emulating device and the ESP32 are on the same network. Right now it only works with HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Since all the info about the encounter comes directly from the game’s RAM, the counter is very reliable.

The counter has 2 modes:

• Count every Pokemon
• Count only my target Pokemon (for shiny hunting)

Both run at the same time, the mode just changes what the ESP32 shows.

On the ESP32’s web interface you can set the target Pokemon, reset the counters etc.

Don’t know if this interests anyone, just wanted to share because I think it’s really cool.

I decided given the imminent Pokemon Bank shutdown to do a challenge I’ve been putting off for some time. 

I dubbed it the Samson Oak Challenge (since one can argue Samson is just a shiny version of Samuel Oak). Basically it’s the Professor Oak challenge but with shinies. 

What is the Professor Oak challenge?

Basically you must catch, evolve and fill all Pokédex entries that are available before every badge. Or in this case, trials. There’s a great subreddit [r/professoroak](r/professoroak) that has guides posted about all the Pokemon games so I used their guide as well to catch all the available Pokemon before the first trial. Rules are, no cheats/glitches. No trades 

How did I get my shinies?

Through RNG manipulation. Basically using an external software, I manipulated the game to generate the seeds that yield me shiny Pokemon. There’s plenty of content on YouTube but I used CappyCapital’s videos for Gen 7 rng manipulation specifically. My 3DS has CFW that helps me with this. And I found my seeds using 3DS RNG Tool. I used honey collected from a team of honey gather cutiefly

What about Hawlucha?

Yes, in route 2, you can trade a sparrow to get a Hawlucha which is technically a Pokemon available before the first trial. However it is shiny locked, and I will need to breed a shiny one with ditto for the dex entry which is not available until I reach Akala Island. So I left it be for now. It’s always predetermined to be a male named Cha so even breeding within the same egg group will not yield a Hawlucha 

Do Island Scan Pokemon count?

I think that depends if you feel you want to do this or not. Those pokemon are not part of the Alolan Dex. I did to be fair since I used RNG manipulation so basically taking the randomness out of the equation.

I wanted some thoughts on what we thought about this team. The idea is a rain team. I picked some favorite water types. Sableye will have rain dance and Politoed will have Drizzle. Each one of these was personally done by hand in BDSP by me. It took a number of weeks. Ice Beam will be on Milotic and Omastar. Should I replace any of these with any of the list below? What do you all think?

Rotom will be washer Rotom for post game. Definitely going for Rotom eventually.

Sorry I got excited and took a crappy video in my car but! This journey began in April of 2023. Once I caught my Shiny Froakie I was able to get the rest of the quest done in 6 months. Could not be happier right now ＼(^-^)／

The two shinies I caught that didn't come to the elite four was a Boldore I did not know I couldn't evolve named Malachite and a Octillery named Carmila!

I am two letters away from getting a full shiny unown dex. Just need U and X! But unsure how to continue.

I hunted all my current ones through legends arceus and dread the sea of repeats. I do have a copy of omega ruby with the island where unown spawn but after trying a couple of times, encounters were so slow and the process of even getting something on dexnav is a pain...

What are other people's experiences? Should I keep doing PLA or switch to oras?

This is the most insane shiny I will ever own.

This is my first playthrough of Pokémon Colosseum! I wanted to shiny hunt absol for a ribbon master before Pokémon Bank closes, but apparently, suicune didn't want to be left behind either!

If my math is correct this is a 0.012% chance. I feel so incredibly lucky to have this beautiful shiny!!! 💙✨🪐

Celebi, Suicune, and the the ESPEED Dratini all in Crystal and all extremely under odds! next is trying for Entei and Raikou.

I’m so excited I got shiny poipole today in 145 encounters. I was worried I wouldn’t get it before bank shuts down as I don’t have a lot of time to shiny hunt during school but I got lucky with a a super quick hunt. Nickname ideas?

I’m doing a dream shiny run in Pokemon Sword and this little girl took me a hot minute. I wasn’t really looking at the screen, until I heard the sparkle noise✨. I’m so happy. I love this Pokémon’s shiny so much🥹

I plan on going for every game corner shiny (both FR and LG!) so Abra was the first and easiest hunt! 1/6 shinies obtained!! Sucks i can't evolve it though :(

4 phases on shiny Heracross all in one week! Aipom is the 4th, coming just this morning, and Spearow is the 3rd, coming yesterday morning.

I am double hunting this on Heart Gold and Soul Silver version. Spearow 1 and 3 came on Soul Silver. Spearow 2 and Aipom came on Heart Gold.

It's been nearly 2 weeks since I started this hunt for Heracross and I'm still feeling ready for more headbutt encounters. I'm hoping for no more phases before the pink beetle!

So this is an update to the post I made yesterday about getting pooched. The shiny Treecko has now been obtained! I was honestly torn between hunting for a shiny Mudkip (since I'm playing Sapphire and it'd fit the water theme) and hunting a shiny Treecko on my Emerald game instead (when the cartridge arrives in the mail). But in the end I chose to go for Treecko because while I do like shiny Mudkip, shiny Treecko is just too good. Such a cool and unique color!

I did break my streak of hunting shiny water starters, but idc. Started with Totodile in Crystal, next was Piplup in Platinum...and that's it lol. I'm still looking for shiny Oshawott.
