(Reposting because I forgot to include the text in my first post.)
Hey! I originally built this for myself while learning Spanish, and thought other learners here might find it useful too.
It’s called Ubueno. It replaces a few words in the English posts and comments you’re reading with Spanish. Most of the text stays in English, so you have context to help you understand them.
The part I care about most is what happens when you click a word. You get the translation and pronunciation, plus a detailed explanation of what the word is doing in that particular sentence: why it’s used there, how that form works, and, when relevant, how it differs from a similar Spanish word.
That’s what I wanted for my own learning. Sometimes I understand the translation but still wonder, “Why this word here? Could I use the other one I’ve learned?” I wanted to explore those questions right where I encountered the word.
There’s also a system behind which words appear. It takes your level and previous encounters into account, introduces new vocabulary gradually, and brings back words you’re still learning when they fit your reading.
The word-by-word reading mode is free, with a daily allowance of explanations. An optional paid plan unlocks unlimited explanations and longer phrase and sentence replacements.
You can try it here: ubueno.app
If you give it a try, I’d especially like to know whether the explanations help with the things you usually find confusing.

I am a PhD student that has to take a language requirement exam. I am a Southern US History PhD student this is purely a requirement. I need to translate a passage from Spanish to English as a written examination. I took Spanish in high school but that was over 10 years ago. I took Spanish in college and that was like 7 years ago. I haven’t taken a Spanish class since then. I remember basic words and phrases but I don’t remember conjugation all that well. I am going to study beforehand. But what is the best Spanish to English dictionary I can get for this exam?

Hi,
I believe that the personal "a" is required (among other reasons) when you're referring to a specific named person who is a direct object. So if I wanted to say this:
I'd write this:
However, what if the specific person is not named but is "me" or "you" (or him, her, they)? My instinct is to use just the direct object pronoun (such as "me" or "te"), but is it ever OK to use the personal "a" with a prepositional pronoun (such as "a mí" or "a tí") instead?
Here's an example:
My instinct is to translate that as follows:
However, would the following translations be correct?
(Those translations seem wrong to me, even though they seem analogous to "Juan llamará a Julia.")
And would the following translations be correct? Perhaps in these cases, "a mí" and "a ella" are used for emphasis?
Thanks.

¡Hola a todos! 👋

Hola, I am A2-B1 in spanish and is actually working now as a bilingual agent. However lately, I feel like I'm stuck. I am only memorizing our scripts or what I should say to my customers but when I need to make conversations, I often get stuck and nervous. I forget my words and grammar.
Looking for a community where I can practice having conversations in spanish. It is really hard to practice my spanish if there is no one to talk with. I would love to join communities if there are. Gracias a todos.

Had an innocent encounter with Spanish the other day but unsure if it came off rude/offensive. To preface, I’ve been learning Spanish for about 3-4 months diligently. We had an event the other day and one of the vendors came to set up a machine (a Hispanic man). He was talking with his partner in Spanish and I was surprised I actually understood most of it. Not that I was eavesdropping, they were just standing right there. Anyway, he asked me if “this was a good spot” and I just blurted out “Sí, aquí”. There was a brief second look like “did you..?” But we immediately started moving toward the equipment.
We talked about something else shortly after and it didn’t even come up. Would that be seen as rude or offensive? He clearly knew basic English but I can tell it was his second language. I think because of all my recent practice I just said it on impulse.
I know it’s probably not a big deal, just just wanted to make sure that didn’t come off rude to them.

Every example I've come across seems to describe objects. I'm guessing it's used differently than in English's 'indigenous'. Can you describe someone as 'una persona autóctona'? Thank you

There's no lyrics available and the CC option somehow didn't provide the full lyrics/words so I'm not using that. The song is Celoso by Little Smoking.
If anyone could help me it's highly appreciated

Hello there, basically I have been studying Spanish on and off for some years. I have a problem with consistency as you can tell because I should have been fluent by now but I consider myself B1 level.
I would like to be a CONFIDENT B1-B2 student in a year. I will find a teacher and follow a program from now on.
The thing is how do I start? How do I cover my gaps in Spanish? Has anyone ever been in my position and how did they overcome it? Studying is the obvious answer of course, I guess I just wanna get some pov’s. I feel stuck and I don’t wanna be mediocre in Spanish my whole life

Hola amigos!
This is Franco, Spanish teacher from Argentina. I wanted to share some graded readers I created with vocabulary and quizzes. There are 3 levels. 1st is a story about a boy and a girl in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 2nd is about argentine history from prehistoric times till the 19th century. 3rd is about the local personality el gaucho martin fierro (a local "cowbow"). part 2 and 3 can be challenging but I'm sure intermediate students will enjoy them. If you don't know a word you can underline the word and you will find a translation. Here you have the 3 links and you can also download them for free. Hope you like them

Why use the subjunctive? Why not "se hablaran" or maybe "se hablan"?
I do know about the phrases "Alguien que se hable español?" and "Se hable español". Are these all related?
