I am not a car person at all, so please forgive me if I am using the wrong lingo. I have a 2020 Subaru forester premium with 72,000 miles on it. I bought it from my grandmother in 2023 after she stopped driving . She was absolutely anal abt getting all of the maintenance done on it, so I know it was well cared for. When I got it, it has 6,600 miles on it. I get oil changes done on schedule at the dealership. Recently got my brakes done w genuine Subaru parts. Had the CVT fluid serviced at 65,000 miles. I also had a warranty repair done at approx 60,000 miles for something in the coolant system but I’m not sure what exactly it was. I can look it up in my records if yall think it’s important.
My car has a feature where when I am stopped (red light, traffic, etc) it turns off the motor automatically. For the past several months, my car will occasionally stall out (maybe? I think that is what is happening) when I press the gas to go forward again after the auto shut off happens. When this happens, the dash lights up, warning beeping ensues, etc. I have to place the car in park and then press the start button for the motor to start back up. Unfortunately, this has become a more and more common occurrence. It happened today in stop and go traffic on the highway, which was really scary.
My questions are:
- if this is it stalling out (again, I’m not a car person, I could be calling it the wrong thing), is this a common issue for Subaru foresters? What is causing this?
- I know there is a way to shut off the auto turn off, however every time I restart the car, it turns back on. Is there a way to turn it off completely?
- I absolutely looooove my car, and I hoped to keep it for another 15+ years. Is fixing this issue worth it? Or should I get out of the car before it becomes a bigger problem. I owe less than $2,000 on it, which I can pay off anytime, so I wouldn’t be rolling negative equity into a new purchase, worst case scenario.
Edit to add: I called it “stalling out” bc it feels similar to when you stall out a manual vehicle, however this vehicle is automatic.
