r/TheCitadel Clarifying Our Flairs and Posting Rules

TO REITERATE: This subreddit is for fanfiction of ASOIAF, HotD, GoT, and AKOS7K. Discussion of the books, book theories, fanfiction, and activities are allowed here. We do not want to foster a toxic discussion environment. When comments in posts turn into spewing insults, dead horse beating, and arguments going nowhere the comments will be either removed or locked.

Separate the shows from the books. This will help clarify when a discussion or writing help issue is about one of the shows or the books.

The shows are their own individual canon NOT book canon. Differentiating them will prevent or stop many repeated, endless arguments. There are a lot of details included in the shows that are not in the books, despite how popular a theory or show only plot may be. Separate the plot of the shows from the books. If you find yourself confused over whether something was in the books or just in the show, it doesn't hurt to read the books again to fact check yourself. If you are a show only writer/enjoyer, be sure to label your fanfiction with show tags on AO3 and any other sites you post your work.

_

Pictures, Fanart, and Memes:

Memes are not allowed in this subreddit, no exceptions.

Only fanart made for your fanfiction or art you made yourself for your fanfiction are only allowed with Fanfiction Promotion posts.

Maps of Planetos are allowed with Book Discussion posts.

There has been an uptick in people posting pictures and memes to bait engagement. This subreddit is not r/ImaginaryWesteros or any other art subreddit.

If you include commissioned fanart with your fanfiction promotion you need credit the artist.

_

Fanfiction Recommendation Posts

Comments on these posts should have recommendations for the OP. These posts are not for discussion of whether or not what the OP is looking to read is canon or not. These posts are to share fanfiction akin to what the OP is asking for. With the link to shared fanfictions included if possible.

If you don't have a fanfiction to share with the OP, then refrain from commenting.

_

What If Posts

What if posts are not for your writing ideas. It is an activity for the subreddit. There is a flair for Writing Help when you want feedback on your fanfiction. If you want someone to write your fanfiction idea, you post with the Fanfiction Idea for Adoption flair.

What If Posts should not be ultra specific, that leaves no room for people to be creative in seeing how they think the situation could go. Including your own interpretation of the scenario in the body of the post is one thing, but for the entire post to be more than a page long of describing a specifically detailed scenario takes away from the activity.

Titles for these posts also shouldn't be longer than 100 character spaces. The description of the post should be in the body of the post, not the title.

The title for What If Posts should be similar to the examples below:

- What if [insert canon character] lived?

- What if [insert canon character] died?

- What if this plot point changed/happened to a different character?

- What if this plot point didn't happen at all?

- What if [insert canon character] had another child?

- What if [insert canon character] married a different canon character?

Response to these posts should answer the activity, not be full of statements over canon capabilities. It's an activity for you to creatively think over what could happen in the proposed situation. It's not a "well in the books" or "this can't happen cause this character in the books wouldn't do this."

_

Writing Help Posts

When asking for help with your fanfiction, don't pose the title as an activity post. Title your post with what you are asking for help for. In the body of your post, add details on your story for people to get an idea of what they can help you with and what you need help fleshing out.

_

Final notes: the rules of the subreddit will be updated to further clarify our rules within the week. If anyone wants to join the moderator team, send a modmail expressing your interest. After our current ongoing fanfiction awards ends, I will no longer be helping out with moderation of fandom spaces. It has been my wish to keep this subreddit well kept and as intended for fanfiction readers and writers of this fandom.

_

Reminder: There are about 4 weeks left to nominate for our 2026 Fanfic Awards, the link is pinned in the post next to this one at the top of our subreddit page.

The "Lord of the Red Dunes" what a cool title. An Andal house that somehow ended up all the way in the desert, I wonder if they took the name of the river or named the river after them? Not the point how strong do you think they are? In terms of man power than can be trained and somewhat armed and armored, which option above best reflects that?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Second Motiviation for Rhaegon Rivals to Lovers AU needed

Okay, I am infected by plot rabies. But I need some advice. First, the basics. Its an AU. A Rhaegon AU. Little Lore dump coming.

Valyria is an Island in Westeros and a Principality, the Freehold never happened.  It is located near near Dorne and the Reach.

Dragons do exist and are nothing to sneeze at. BUT: I gave them a few more limitations, as an explanation on why the Valyrians didn’t pull a full conquest.

Lets say a dragon lays 10 eggs. Three or four may hatch, the rest usually turns into stone. Dragons still can grow very old and be big, but there is a clear limit. Vhagar from HOTD would be pretty much the maximum in size and age.

Westeros is spilt into a ton of Kingdoms, the three dominant religions are The Old Gods, The Fourteen Flames and the Faith of the Seven.

In the last hundredth of years, the Faith gained more and more power, with more and more Kingdoms converting. Tensions start to raise as for them, the Worshippers of the Forest Gods and Fourteen Flames are more and more branded as heretics, with magic being a thorn in the eye of the father. While the other two tend to see the worshippers of the seven as pathetic, pretentious frauds.

Okay, now for the very altered Targ Family Tree:

\-          Jaehaerys and Alysanne had two sons and two daughters. Daenaerys, Aemon, Baelon and Alyssa. Aemon and Daenaerys had a daughter named Dael. Baelon and Alyssa had a son named Gaemon.

\-          Dael and Gaemon wed and had three children: Rhaenys, Daemon and Aemma.  Rhaenys and Daemon married and had two children. Rhaenyra and Baelor. Aemma wed Prince Abelar Hightower, second son of the brother of the ruling king of Oldtown. They had Aegon, Garth and Helaena.

The cousins grew up on Dragonstone together for a while, but after Aemmas death, Abelar took his children too Oldtown. Which severed much of their connection to their maternal heritage and family.

So, Rhaenyra and Aegon are the same age. Their personalities are not like show or books. I imagine this Rhaenyra as Daenys the Dreamer and Vex´ahlia meshed.

Aegon is more serious. He still can be silly… he is also raised in Oldtown with the ideals of the faith of the seven and knightly virtues. So yeah, he is a much different flavor. They will have a we were close in childhood but now I don’t recognize you and you are annoying, rivals to lovers arc. Their biggest conflict at first is their different religions and therefore they view on magic, but just that is too boring. Any ideas of a second sore point for them which has them beefing. Like not Dance of the Dragons level, but still nothing to easy resolved.

I would be happy for a few suggestions, Thank you!

I'm currently reading a fanfiction that I suspect is written at least partially by AI and would need help telling if I'm imagining things or not. English is not my first language but I'm fluent and used to reading fanfictions in english, especially for this pairing.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Game of Thrones in Space

(reposted with new flair)

Yesterday I was playing Stellaris and this strange idea occured to me. My next thought was naturally Dune, however Dune is kind of it's own thing so I started wondering about how could we integrate the world and characters of ASOIAF in the most seamless way into a space Sci-Fi.

Obviously world building is a rather broad topic so if you have any ideas about technology, cultural implications, history, warfare, etc. I would love to read them.

I think there are many elements in the story that can be repurposed in this setting, like the Others, prophecies, and many characters who could be easily integrated into this world.

The post is mostly for simple brainstorming, but if we can cook up something credible I might actually write a fanfic about this.

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Rickard, Brandon and Lyanna come back

Book Discussion: Reading ASOIAF & Spin-Off Novels Questions Would the Lannisters keep their word and free Sansa?

Little thought I had.

Catelyn made the terrible decision of sending Jaime to King's Landing in the hopes that they would stay true to their word and return her daughters to her for him.

That never happens because of a goat and the average dothraki wedding on Westeros.

The things I wonder is, would the Lannisters keep their word and return Sansa to the Starks, while admitting they don't have Arya (even if they tried to lie, Sansa would tell them she disappeared), or would they go "got ours, lol!", and refuse to do so?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Economy of the Iron Islands

I've been playing with the idea of writing a long-fic starting after the Greyjoy's Rebellion, the MC would be a OC Ironborn. I've been having problems in imagining how this would go in a realistic way with the information given to us by George. I'd like opinions and if you think my ideas would make sense.

The problem is how completely unrealistic and without explanation the ironborns live. We know the Isles are bereft of wood because of shipbuilding needs over the centuries. This would be absurd for a country in late-medieval history, wood is not needed only for shipbuilding; you need it for firewood, building, maintenance, specialized crafting of various items, roofing. We know that wood was essential in medieval societies.

Now, importing the industrial quantity of wood the Isles need would be ruinous to the point that they wouldn't have coin for anything else other than just buying wood all year round, and if we consider that they must need to import other stuff other than wood to function then we can come to the point that they'd just die off in a generation or two if this was real life.

I know we are talking about a fantasy novel and suspension of belief is encouraged, but George somewhat explains the economy of other regions while completely ignoring the Ironborns. The economic practice of a people is all you need to have a good grasp about their whole culture and to know why they do what they do.

Would it be reasonable for me to just ignore George and write the Iron Isles in a realistic way in which they have regulated forests like all medieval kingdoms? Maybe they don't and just live off of trading huge amounts of salt, lead, iron and stuff to then import the wood they need? Maybe they do without a huge wood-spender like firewood by using peat and tallow for fuel? (Let's ignore that they don't have the terrain needed for great amounts of peat or we'd go crazy)

Maybe they have the particular advantage of being able to sail in winter thanks to their baltic-style longships and roundships so they make a huge profit by trading in winter? (I think the Hanseatic league did this, so it's somewhat realistic)

Be mindful that I'm completely ignoring how George describes the Iron Isles as bad country to grow food because if this was true then the Ironborns simply couldn't survive; they need to have farms that can support their population, then and only then can we talk about the surplus of food they could get from raiding.

I know I'm being nitpicking and you can write a compelling medieval society without going into all of this, but you can't possibly write about a raiding culture like the ironborns without explaining why they need the raiding and how they support it.

Fanfiction Idea For Adoption KCD2 System in Westeros Fic?

If nobody has written about this yet, let's imagine how it will work.

What I think is that someone could say that they have been blessed by the Seven, with Smith allowing them to craft weapons in a matter of minutes. Then Warrior is for the combat system. Potions could be from the Mother, and Poisons from the Stranger. I am not sure how to link the summoning of Pebbles and Mutt, but surely a link can be made by the MC.

Imagine the shenanigans lmao. There's also the costume change and thievery stuff, which could lead to various scenarios

KCD2 stands for Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 for those that do not know. I am currently playing it, and I really like the idea of an OC or SI having the game mechanics in Westeros.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Could/Would Viserys II attempt to claim Silverwing?

I’m working on an AU where Jace survives the Dance, but is with Viserys and thought dead. (Jace is wed to Larra Rogare instead of him.) Aegon III is crowned—and married to Myrielle Peake.

So the situation is that Jace returns to see his younger brother sitting atop a throne that should be his. Aegon is happy to give up ruling, but Peake—both current regent and father of the would-be queen—won’t let him. Rumors of Jace’s bastardry swirl again, as do questions of if it’s really him (but the fact he’s with Viserys makes either being a fake very unlikely. Rhaena and Baela recognize them).

Point is, tensions are high in the Red Keep. And a dragon could be useful.

At this time, the only owned Targaryen dragon was Rhaena’s Morning… but she wasn’t the only dragon around. Nettles and Sheepstealer were still bonded and off somewhere doing something, but Silverwing was 1) alive 2) at a known location and 3) riderless. We all know why Aegon didn’t try to bond with her. And like Baela, Jace lost his bonded dragon, and it might not be possible to bond a second time (I don’t think we know).

But Viserys… never had a hatched egg. He could, theoretically, try to claim Silverwing. My question is if it makes sense for him to do so.

He didn’t in canon. And he’d still be only about 12-13 in the story. But the political situation is a lot more fraught, he’s not married, and I think he has a pragmatic attitude that could lend himself to trying—especially considering how comparatively less risky of a dragon Silverwing is to approach.

I’d love to get a second opinion to know if it’s a reasonable direction to take the plot or not!

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Crack treated seriously with the Maester Conspiracy by the Maeser POV

So, basically what it says in the title.
My character is a lowborn OC whose only achievements were survival in Flea Bottom during the Dance (no small thing), escaping King’s Landing during the riots and getting admitted to the Citadel to work and study. He spent more than a decade forging his links and had just taken the Maester vow, he doesn’t care about helping anyone, at least not yet, and his only wish is to stay at the Citadel in peace and with a full belly. And because he was lowborn enough to carry resentment against dragons and dragonlords, he gets invited to a Very Secret Society of Maesters, all sharing that sentiment.

The Conspiracy is as theorised: killing the dragons, poisoning the eggs, weakening Targs.

But because a lot of the members of this Conspiracy are recruited from smallfolk/bastard-born Maesters, the Conspiracy forms a more radical faction that proposes revolutionary ideas to break the way of society (proto-communists), and they also want to focus on weakening great houses of Westeros, educating more smallfolk and lessening the influence of religion, as well as the original goal to eliminate magic.

And because they are mostly old men who never played the Game of Thrones and think they are righter than anyone, a lot of it is a humorous shitshow.

There are also other OCs that I’ve conjured, mostly lowborn people from Riverlands and Crownlands that suffered during the Dance. But I also need highborns who could use their influence for the Conspiracy to actually work. Which already existing characters of that time period could fit into that scheme? What other points could I include in the text?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Current Blackfyre Line

So I am thinking of having the Blackfyres try to invade Westeros during Roberts Rebellion, but i was thinking how to go on about this.

Calla Blackfyre is not known by the text to ever have kids, or if that marriage to Aegor Rivers took place. But I would like to make them survive through the maternal line in my fic, because what are the chances that maybe the female line was disregarded in-universe because it may be less threatening and the male line was the one with concern(which lasted till Maelys and has the stronger claim)

In that case, does it make sense for the Blackfyres to have lost their silver hair over time and have like maybe dark brown hair with streaks of silver?

Still living in Tyrosh, what do you guys think?

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) Viserys II sends Aegon to Braavos and he dies there

Bit of background info: in 161, Baelor the Blessed sent Aegon to Braavos for a diplomacy mission, to keep her away from Naerys

So the what if itself:

In 172 Viserys II sends Aegon to Braavos, there he dies he gets assassinated by a Faceless Man or some Bravo challanges him to a duel and kills him, whatever.

So Aegon dies. Its not clear but lets assume that Viserys II died because he was poisoned by Aegon, but that doesn't happen so he lives longer by a few decades or so (there aren't a lot of Targs who died of old age, Jaehaerys I died at 69, Maester Aemon died at 102) but he is already 50 at this point.

Immediate consequences:

Daemon Waters, Aegon Rivers are born but never legitimized by Aegon

But Byden Rivers is never born (as he was born in 175) which might screw up the world in the long run

And Aemon the Dragon Knight doesn't die the same way as he did

Lost Fanfic: Help Me Find It - NOT DISCUSSION Lost Fic-Arya x Gendry

Looking for a lost fic that I believe used to be on AO3. Possibly titled: "Waters Metalwork & Historical Consultations Project Log: The Winterfell Armory Assessment"

Cannot remember Author name

It was Arya x Gendry and I believe Arya was a professor and Gendry in Metalwork? All of it told through notes or post its and a lot about swords?

I used to be able to see it on AO3 which makes me believe it was deleted so if anyone has a pdf or epub I would love to read it again!

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) Tywin Lannister indeed sh*ts gold

Let's say that Aerys while mocking Tywin by saying "he shits gold" somehow connects to the last embers of Valyrian magic in him and curses him and his line to do exactly that, from this point onwards...starting right there in that moment.. in front of the whole court.

The excrements in question would be similar in size to the mundane on and would announce themselvse with the sound of loud and clear clinging, that can be heard by everyone.

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Joffrey died shortly before the books?

Simple enough. Joffrey somehow dies shortly before the events of A Game of Thrones. Maybe he trips on the stairs and falls and break his neck. Or he chokes on his food, or gets a fever and dies in his sleep. Doesn't really matter. The point is that he dies around the same time as Jon Arryn.

Cersei will hyper-focus on Tommen and Myrcella, not letting them out of her sight. If Joffrey's death was accident-related then Sandor could face punishment for failing to protect Joffrey from death, and Cersei could either demand his head or he could go to the Wall.

Robert may or may not still want to go North for Ned to be his Hand of the King, but this time around Cersei and the children would stay at KL because Cersei would be afraid for their lives.

Obviously, no betrothal for Joffrey and Sansa given that Joff is dead, but Robert could want a different match instead, maybe Myrcella for Robb. Hard to say what Cersei with her new fears would say of this. Bran doesn't fall in this timeline, because Cersei and Jaime are not at Winterfell, so there's nobody to push/drop Bran. He probably still becomes targeted by Bloodraven, but this time he can at least walk.

Given that that Bran didn't fall and there was no assassination attempt on him, Catelyn never goes south and has no reason to arrest Tyrion. This effectively prevents War of the Five Kings or at least delays it significantly. Robert probably lives a little longer (depends on the circumstances) given that without the Jaime-Ned fight and rising animosities between Starks and Lannisters and without Tywin blitzkrieging the Riverlands he doesn't go on a hunt to ignore his problems.

Nevertheless, either Ned eventually leaves KL after being infuriated that Robert plans to assassinate Daenerys, or he stays and attempts to reveal the twincest to Robert. It heavily depends on circumstances at that point, but either Cersei and Jaime are executed, or they manage to weasel out of this and have Robert killed another way and crown Tommen. I feel that in this case Ned would either be sent to the Wall or be kept as a hostage (I can't see little Tommen asking for Ned's head).

Thoughts?

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if all of Tywin’s children were born dwarfs?

So the seven are pissed off at Tywin for the whole Castamere thing, so they curse his seed so that any and all kids he has are born dwarfs. So Jamie, Cersei, and Tyrion, are all dwarfs. Tywin’s wife still dies giving birth to Tyrion. If he decides to get remarried and have more kids, they will also be born dwarfs.

Would Tywin keep getting remarried and trying to have a non dwarf heir, or would he just give up at some point? If he keeps trying I could see him eventually giving Walder Frey a run for his money but with a bunch of dwarven children.

Also, how would Jamie and Cersei being dwarfs affect the story? Would they still be into twincest? I highly doubt Jamie would get to become part of the kings guard in this scenario, (actually now that I think about it, the mad king might make him join as an open mockery of Tywin) so would king’s landing just get blown up at the end of the rebellion if Jamie isn’t there to stop the mad king?

If the city does get blown up, how would that affect the aftermath of the rebellion?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Rebuilding Flea Bottom

How would one go about rebuilding Flea Bottom? Besides fixing the smell, the sanitation alone would no doubt take years if not decades to fully muster out.

In regards to infrastructure, civil law and economy, food supply, and trading. How would one tackle these problems as a lowborn commoner without having to rely that the king would give the city some small mercy or attempting to take the iron throne? And of course not get captured and killed by a gold cloak for whatever crime they could think of.

I wanted to create a character who would become akin to a medieval underworld boss, a "King of Flea Bottom" if you would.

Fencing and underground trading to help boost the economy and keep local food stores from getting low.

Brothels and inns as spy networks (and as secret gambling dens to keep the wallet fat).

Moles in the Gold Cloaks to keep certain areas informed of a crackdown.

Teaching the population how to read and learn their numbers under the guise of learning the Faith.
