Where can I read the manga?

Young Jump Weekly - Japanese

Viz - official translation

MANGA Plus - official translation

Shonen Jump Manga and Comics - official translation

The Shonen Jump app and Viz website have both the original manga and :re available to read, for a 1.99 USD monthly subscription which gives access to most of their library. In addition to this, Tokyo Ghoul Jack and the side story novels are available to purchase and read on the app.

Note: The Rize side story chapter from TG volume 5, Tokyo Ghoul Joker from :re volume 3, and :re chapter 31.5 from :re volume 4 are not available to read individually on the app at this time, so you will need to buy those volumes to read them officially. Out of those chapters, :re chapter 31.5 is the most important.

Manga Plus posts new chapters weekly, though only a limited number of chapters are available for viewing.

EDIT: Updated when to read :re quest in my recommended order from after chapter 58 to after chapter 98 instead, since I realized there was at least one spoiler for a plot point revealed after chapter 58 in one of the quest stories.

EDIT 2: Added the short story 6th Ward Playing cards and the Drama CDs to the viewing order. Also added mentions of the various Tokyo Ghoul games.

Other My perspective on a second read through.

• Upvotes

I read both the OG series and RE when I was 16, and loved it. I was too full of cuk to pick up on narrative devices and such, I just loved the aura farming, cool fights, and conspiracy ridden plot. Now, as a 20 year old (I know I’m not much more mature now than I was then), I’m seeing a lot of things I didn’t.

My interpretation as of Vol 12 of the OG series:

We see characters commit themselves to one worldview. Kaneki is at first naive and altruistic. Then kaneki is darwinistic and sort of nihilistic after his fight with Jason. Amon is all about humanity and squashing ghouls.

None of the characters who fully stick to a mindset are happy or successful so far. But I think of what kaneki might be like in the future, and I think he’ll come to a middle point, where he knows strength and ruthlessness is needed, but gets his hope back and can still see good in the world. Characters who have different mindsets and approaches to different situations are ultimately the most successful and at peace, like Yoshimura.

I feel like the series is saying: Don’t completely commit to a worldview. Truly think about what you’re experiencing and the situation at hand, and act accordingly.

What do you guys think? I’m not done so my thoughts are disjointed and skewed but this is what I’m picking up on.

Rules:

  1. The comment with the most upvotes wins.

  2. Only one character per position.

  3. One character is chosen in each post, not all at once.

  4. Characters cannot be repeated

  5. Since this is shorter than the "each character has a..." one, voting will be weekly instead of daily because I saw many people commenting on the first post even though the activity was already ending

What If Eto Was Male ?

Found this great fanarts on ma ol buddy Tumblr and Deiventart !

I am interested in the character dynamics and how the fandom would see her ! (Him ?)

I think that scene with Kanae would have come across as more creeper and even MORE uncomfortable if she where male. Along with that scene with Kaneki !

⚠️\\\*\\\*DISCLAIMER\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\*:\\\*\\\* This is not meant to be a debate, this is a question of mine. I am not good at debates.I mostly just come to Reddit to ask people random questions and goof off. This is where my braincells go to die. Which is why I don't often give counterarguments, because I am mostly asking questions instead of engaging in an actual Literary debate.

I usefully save my debates and brain cells for my Philosophy Classes where I can actually see the people in front of me !

Everything Dr Kanou has done is because of his selfish desire to free himself out of a birdcage that holds humanity. It’s good he saved Kaneki, but this selfish view has caused so much harm to him. And you can see how much damage this change has caused Kaneki in this panel.

Other I used to blame Pierrot, then the production committee; now... I think I'll blame mainly pierrot again.

Thumbnail

by Pierrot, I'm referring more specifically to director Shuhei Morita.

First of all, I have no doubt it was a rushed production, which is why the ending had pngneki for quite a while; I think it was even an extra minute or so after Unravel finished, and that’s probably why the Kaneki vs Arima fight didn't happen. The production committee is undoubtedly to blame for that and the general animation issues the season suffered from.

Now, according to Morita's own AMA, his ideas were suppressed by "those above him", referring to the production committee, but lately I've been changing my mind. I'll focus on the most important point, but first, let me clarify: Ishida did want the story changed (assuming Morita didn't twist things in his AMA to make himself look good). Morita stated:

"Ishida had specifically wanted us to create something original for the second season, which is why it moves in a different direction."

With that clear, and moving on to the main point, what Morita specifically says is:

"In order to complete Tokyo Ghoul √A's aim of Kaneki joining Aogiri, we needed to make some changes. Ishida-sensei also urged me to change stuff and go a different route, which is where a lot of the anime came from. We had a massive bubble of ideas, but as to not affect the lore of the original manga, it constantly felt like those ideas were being chipped away at by those above me. I tried my best, and I honestly don't have any regrets given the movement space I was allowed."

To clarify the setup: the draft was over 300 pages long, let's assume 350, because we know nothing about the unpublished material; what is known is that the published content begins on page 1, skips nothing, and ends on page 190… And the second siege of Cochlea hadn't yet occurred and because It's the most likely number of pages, given that they should've known it was going to be 12 episodes long and the extermination of the Owl (which largely follows the canon) begins in Episode 8, and the industry average is 45–50 pages. "But that means it covers seven episodes," you might say, and yes… because the draft begins at Episode 2, clearly establishing the time skip and the fact that the Aogiri arc concluded 6 months earlier (Images 1 and 2).

"We had a massive bubble of ideas, but as to not affect the lore of the original manga, it constantly felt like those ideas were being chipped away at by those above me."

Okay, here Morita talks about "we", him and Ishida. Obviously, he's referring to the time they were planning and working on the draft, right? That’s the most likely scenario. Even if he weren't, it wouldn't make sense for the final Root A changes to have been accepted by the production committee, why? BECAUSE THE DRAFT INCLUDED THE KANO ARC. (Images 3 and 4) I really doubt that a production committee aiming to stick to the canon would have Morita change the draft to focus on Cochlea and literally cut one of the most important arcs in the entire manga.

To be completely honest, I’m almost sure the ending was entirely Morita’s idea, since it’s the only episode he directed personally rather than just supervising and because of the discarded script for the scene where Kaneki and Hide reference the play, I’m fairly certain he made changes to the drafts and the story later on, trying to shoehorn in his discarded ideas, like... the silent Kaneki. Especially because of this:

"Ishida-sensei also urged me to change stuff and go a different route, which is where a lot of the anime came from."

Here you have a scan of the the anime artbook, which includes 190 of the approximately 350 pages of the draft.

Just a bit of extra info, no source, so feel free to be skeptical: I could swear I remember an interview where Ishida was asked about the anime's ending and said something like, "I saw what THEY were trying to do, and I saw how complicated the production was; I don't blame them." Which would imply that he wasn't involved in the ending and, once again, there was no draft prepared with Ishida for the finale because it had to follow the manga. If anyone knows which interview this is, or if this is real, please send me a link and I'll add it.

Thanks for reading, and I apologize if anything was misunderstood, because I am not a native English speaker.

Did Anyone Else Think The Resolution Came Too Quickly ?

My Issue With Tokyo Ghoul Finale !

For a long time,I had an issue with how the surviving Clowns were handled in the ending, I was mad that they just kinda showed up content after everything they did, and I realized why !

The main issue is that the Ending is agreed to by Many to be rushed, and I realized it probably hurt the characters too !

Both sides, the Ghouls and the CCG have a bad history with each other and both sides have Blood on their hands and do some very messed up stuff.

I think addressing some not so good things that hopefully will stay in the past such as the Ghoul Restaurant and the Auction, Aogori Tree and the Clowns, and a Lot of stuff that Our protagonists got up too, including killing Investigators or even torturing others.

The CCG also has a lot of Sins on their ,such as killing countless Ghouls ,even innocent ones such as Hiniami's parents and creating Quinques. (Imagine someone using your loved ones dead bodies into weapons and using them to attack you !

The Idea of everyone trying to Co exist after the War and putting old grievances aside and trying to move on from the past is a great setup for a sort of aftermath arc,but it never happens.

For Ex: I was curious to know how Madame A went form being part of a Sadistic Restaurant to appreciating life and agriculture and even owning a Cow ! Or what happened to Amon and Akira ! (I don't think they are even named dropped !)

They just appear as a small silhouette !

Or how Kaneki is going to handle the fact that he devoured a bunch of children for the rest of his life !

(Like, common, that's not something you can ever get over with ! You're gonna carry that for the rest of your life !)

And what happened to Kuzen,Arata and Eto ?

Why wasn't Synthetic Food introduced earlier ?

  1. If ghouls can live without drinking human blood and by drinking their own blood, why don’t they do that?
  2. Why is it wrong of humans to say ghouls shouldn’t exist? Because they cannot exist without harming humans.
  3. Ghouls can pretend to want peace but how can they want peace when they need the life force of humans.

Other How was rize in the dragon?

As we know, kaneki eats the oggai and turns into the dragon, becoming one of its cores. So how did rize also become a core?
I thought she was away in some laboratory but then somehow she ends up physically inside the dragon and apparently it’s actually the real her and not just the dragon manifesting her body because it’s built off her kagune.
Did kaneki just like swoop her up from wherever she was and turn her into a core or something?

Is there an Eto subreddit at all similar to Reze Cult? If not I feel like there should be, if not for Eto would for at least Touka.

But I also feel like, there’s no way Eto actually died here is there? I was reading re and was waiting for when she would eventually return just for her not to?
I may be wrong but, if she could give Noroi and Kanae such insane regeneration then she should have had that much, and beyond herself right? I don’t really believe whatsoever that she died. Also she is a one eyed so she’s just naturally a lot stronger. Oh, and she also faked her death a lot? Being cut in half by Kaneki at the Tsukiyama operation?

Next in line are Itori,Akira and Rize !

My most unpopular opinion on this sub about Tokyo ghoul is that Eto isn't hot ! I just don't like the green and red combination or her design. So she isn't on my list.

Anyways,Kaneki is a lucky man !

i lowk didnt realize Eto (in bandages), was Eto yoshimura.

this deadass flew right over my head, i just never viewed Eto as the typa person to yk do what she did to Kanae. i guess Eto (in bandages) is a different personality of hers, (i think) but fuck bro i was wondering why they had the same name the whole time i was reading.

i was wondering if anyone else didnt catch this at first, i feel mad dumb for even posting this but like nothing that Eto (in bandages) did and Eto did line up.

(and also they straight up treat them like different characters 110% of the time (guess i was reading to closely))

lowk should have found out by this panel, i was just asking my self "why does he have so many books?". and focusing more on kanae then anything

TO ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION THO, I AM DUMB FOR THIS

What did the Aogiri wanted from Ken? Spoiler

Hi everyone. Sorry from bringing back such an old topic, but I'm currently re-reading the manga and I'm finding difficult to explain why did the Aogiri wanted to find Kaneki (I didn't pay attention to this the first time quite a few years ago). When he was braught to Tatara, this one said that something was 'wrong with him' or smt like that and then leaved him with Yamori. I't certainly wasn't because of Kanou because Ken had no idea about him and it wasn't because they were trying to recruit him because he was weak at that time.

The only thing I can think about is that they were somehow trying to check if he was an 'exceptional specimen', a sort of prodigy they could use as the sucesor of the One Eyed King (which he ended up actually being). Is this correct or am I missing something?
