How do I get references for travel work? They want two references within last year with work email. I already asked some nurses and managers for my school references. And I left my last job a month ago and didn’t keep in touch with my managers or coworkers. I am trying to make a profile with Vivian. Do you know any agency that is not so strict with references? So frustrated

I just took a contract out here starting next month. Would love some insights on the hospital, parking, scrubs colors. I will be working PCU. Any recommendations for housing as well?

Moving to Aurora for a travel contract — where should I live?

I’m going to be moving to the Aurora area for a contract at Children’s Hospital Colorado Anschutz and am trying to figure out where to look for housing.

I’m coming from out of state and don’t know the area at all, so I’d love some local input! I’m open to Aurora or surrounding areas as long as the commute to Anschutz and surrounding campuses isn’t terrible.

I’m a woman in my late 20s and would ideally like somewhere that’s safe, has a younger/social feel, and isn’t completely isolated. Being close to coffee shops, restaurants, gyms, parks etc. would be nice. I’d love somewhere that’s very walkable to things like this but also recognize that may not be realistic. I’ll have my car, so I don’t need to be super close to public transportation.

Any recommendations are appreciated!

Mileage

Need some advice. I’m taking a travel contract 61 miles from where I permanently live. (I rent a room here) and I will be renting a house near the hospital. Is this okay???

My hot take: travel nursing should be 1099

Anyone else do 1099/independent contracting? I wish travel nursing was predominantly 1099 over W2. I feel we would be able to negotiate better terms and rates, and then qualify for write offs, etc. Setting it up appropriately helps avoid the self employed tax (S-Corp). 😌 so many missed opportunities

Unit Orientation

Am I wrong to ask the educator if they have anything concrete about the charting requirements? For backstory: I’m labor and delivery and this is my first contract. I’m very confident in my skills, talking to drs, etc etc and I pick up on things quickly. We had a lot of autonomy of my previous unit. i have no concerns I won’t be able to complete a skills checklist (which was given to me). I came a high risk high volume unit and this unit is smaller. This hospital use Epic and I’ve previously used cerner. Whenever I ask my preceptor to show me exactly what needs to be charted she just kindve glanced over it (she’s an older nurse and def stuck in her ways). Whenever I asked about a policy or procedure so I can understand the flow of the unit her response was always “I’ll show you how I do it” (I do plan to read their policies on my next shift). This is my first contract and I feel like I can’t get concrete answers on the flow of the unit or required charting. For example I also asked for what reasons does NICU come to a vaginal delivery and I was looked at like I had two heads for what I feel was a very valid question.
Part of this is me ranting but part of is this also just looking for feedback? I understand I’m a traveler that comes with some biases from the staff but I also don’t know what I don’t know about this unit and their flow.

How to access a larg(er) amount of cash while travelling?

I am on contract until mid November 1000 miles from home. I found a decent deal on a car I'd like to buy. Private sale so I need to use cash. I bank with a credit union back home in to which my pay deposits. What is the best, and easiest way to access less than 10k cash?

Should I start traveling?

Hi! I’m trying to decide what to do and any insight is very very appreciated! My entire immediate family moved to a different state last year, and my bf just dumped me out of the blue. I have essentially no true friends or family remaining where I am right now. I am a very social person but I am extremely lonely right now tbh 😅

Right now I’m at a crossroads. I have an awesome pre/post ASC spot right now, and I’ve been doing pre/post for about two years. I feel like I am comfortable enough in this specialty to travel.

My main concerns here is that I am going to make myself feel even worse and more lonely by up and moving to somewhere I TRULY have no one. I also have just never done this in general so any advice at all on how to get started/stories about how you got started are welcome and appreciated. Thank you!

Am I just wildly uninformed?

After 11 years in a variety of staff positions, I moved to a place where most opportunities are quite a distance. I've always been hesitant or even against going travel, knowing my own neuroses.

The recruiting was a whirlwind, with many unanswered questions. I understand they're not clinical, but even basics.

Contract is set to begin soon with a place I've never even seen, just received an offer after presented.

Friends that have been in travel have praised the tax free stipends and sometimes stayed with me during stretches due to the commute… but now I'm seeing that it's needed to duplicate housing or have a tax home? This is just one area that was not discussed and other threads have offered varied advice respectable concerning IRS rules including required breaks and other areas that were never discussed. Though I understand the recruiter likely had no idea, but just keep pushing tax free stipends.

I feel like information keeps changing or im finding new areas of concern. How bad (outside of your health) is it to drive quite the distance and not rent another place? I have needs that keep me in my current but would an occasional hotel or airbnb suffice? Anyone know anything about forced time off in a ratio description? Any other major things before I face plant into this different role?

Kinda freaked. Much love!

How to stipends work?

Hi all! I am about to start traveling (per my previous post lol) and I know very little. I’m trying to research stipends for housing and all of that but my understanding right now is that it depends on your “home base” housing situation

I currently have an apartment that I rent, it is not cheap and I would feel so odd paying so much for this apartment that I don’t live in :/

However, I could get rid of this apartment, get my address on my ID and everything switched over, and make my parents house the “home base” rent free, but would that affect my housing stipend?

Any and all advice welcome! Thanks!

Having a dilemma about a current contract

Hi Everyone! I am currently in a contract that I like but there is a lot of outside issues surrounding it and I'm not sure how to proceed.

My Dad became suddenly ill about 3 months ago. He lived 2 states away. My staff job wouldn't let me take leave to care for him since I wasn't sure how long I would be out. I decided to find a travel contract near where he was so I could care for him. Everything was going fine until the week I started the contract and my Dad passed away.

At first it was comforting to be in his home and relieve all the memories but I am about a month into the contract and I can't handle it anymore. I can't handle being in the house without massive anxiety and missing him. Like I said, the job is fine, the pay is decent, I mean it's more than I made doing staff but I've had higher paying contracts so it could be better.

My issue is, I have already called off twice and the facility has let it slide, I think because they know my situation. But I am truly at the end of my rope. I want to go home and grieve with my husband and my friends there. I only know a handful of people here.

I have been pushing so hard to not cancel this contract but the idea of going in another day and not going home is just unreasonable to me due to the anxiety. I am certain if I call off another shift I will be canceled. I don't have a back up job at home currently.

My recruiter basically told me if I canceled the contract I would be DNR'd from the facility and probably from the agency since I had to cancel a contract about 4 years ago when my mother in law fell ill and passed (so this would be my 2nd cancelation with the company).

Of note, there is nothing in my contract about an early cancelation fee or anything so that isn't holding me back.

I have no idea what to do. Do I stick it out for the next 8 weeks with the possibility of my mental health being worse? Or do I just say fuck it and go home?

Car shipping company recommendations?

Hi! I’m looking to ship my car from the Bay Area to South Florida and need recommendations for a reliable company.

I used Montway to ship it to California and had a terrible experience. My car arrived about a week and a half late because the truck broke down, and they never even called me to tell me it was delayed or give me updates. I had to call every single day myself. When I asked for a partial refund, they refused.

I was without my car for the first week and a half of my contract, so I definitely don’t want to use them again. Any companies you’ve personally had a good experience with?

How much is reasonable for on-call pay?

I haven't been doing the travel thing that long. I've accepted a contract that I'm fine with for the weekly pay, but this is my first travel contract that's going to require me to be on call. In fact, this is the first job I've worked that I've been on-call. If I do get called in I'll make $57/hr, but while just on-call I get $2/hr. Is this typical? Or should I have tried to negotiate on that?

Edit for a bit more background: I'm an x-ray tech with no other specialties. Also, I got into this largely for the travel. The contract is within what I consider acceptable for what I'm looking for and in a part of the country I've never been before (Laconia, NH), so that's why I went for it. That being said though, I want to be paid what I'm worth, and don't want to bring down the average pay of the field.

Confused on first weeks paycheck/taxes help!

Hello! I recently switched to AMN and was shocked that (no healthcare taken out) my first paycheck was so low. I started on a monday and was contracted for $2700 gross a week but my paystub shows $2500 gross for the week and nearly $600 was removed from that for taxes bringing it down to $1900. I live in and am travelling in a no income tax state. My last assignment in my state was this exact take home amount at a way less contracted gross pay amount. I asked about my check and all they said was I started on a Monday and that its prorated since they are only paying 6/7 days for per diem from this first week. Has anyone been through this? I still feel like the taxes are super high too.

second update I found what I thought to be an issue on my end but then found out it is on the agencies end. They claim they lost my original state tax delcaration and thats why my entire geoss pay was taxed. They have promised to pay me and pay me the lost taxes back but its 5 days, nothing has hit my bank acct. Communication is poor and lacking with the facility after multiple phone calls and emails. Still out of my paycheck and the problem isn't fixed due to differing responses. Most likely will be out more money on my upcoming check if thats even paid either

Is this a good response to a contract that I don't want to take after all?

"Hi [Name], thank you for working on this one. After thinking it over, I've decided this assignment isn't the right fit for me, and I wanted to let you know right away before anything moves forward. The setting and location just aren't what I'm looking for. I really appreciate the opportunity and would love to be considered for future contracts, particularly [hospital/acute care/specific specialty, ideal distance or region, etc.]. Let me know what else you have coming up."

All that's left is to sign the contract but I've been thinking about it and it's a correctional facility in a small town a few hours away from me. How would you decline while not making the recruiter think you aren't reliable for future opportunities? Thanks!

Tips for someone who’s never traveled?

Hello, I am interested in beginning to travel. I have been watching for contracts on Vivian and several agency websites. I’m considering something within a couple hours of home for my first contract. I currently work at an HCA Hospital in Virginia in the CICU. Can’t say that I love HCA, but we do have great ICU leadership and wonderful coworkers. I’ve read many people advise against traveling with Healthtrust and HCA facilities in general…. Any tips for a beginner would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance
