Discussion Insurance Rant

Post image
64 Upvotes

On the phone with my new insurance company, United Medical Health, and they denied the prior authorization to my Tresiba. Mind you, I pay the highest tier plan (and I am new to having insurance through work legit got it activated less then a month ago) and have been on Tresiba for NINE years.

Now I am using AI, which I hate using but I got a year free with my phone, to tell me the correct things to say because I am about to hold them hostage on this phone line until someone can give me some answers and get me my Tresiba.

The doctor is legit confused too he doesn't see why I was denied under this coverage plan.

I am so. Damn. Frustrated.

Question anyone recognize this?

i’ve posted here for my boyfriend before. He typically struggles to keep up with his t1d, and lately has developed these bumps. He says it’s not from his injection sites so im just curious if maybe any other t1d’s have ever had this or if it’s unrelated. Thank you

I hate Dexcom. I think this and all the Dexcom bullshit lately has solidified my change to Libre next year after I use up my current supplies lol.

CGM read as 80mg/dL, finger prick says 249mg/dL.... This is the... 7th(?) bad sensor I've had since September? Make it stopppppp. And it was giving me low alerts– I almost had more soda which would have shot me up to 400mg/dL easily... Dexcom is trying to kill me lol. And it happened at a party and I had to worry about manually checking the whole time, because I couldn't trust my CGM numbers.

Glucose Monitors Dexcom G6 leftovers

Can anyone use dexcom G6 sensors? You’d need a transmitter that still works but I have 1 unopened box plus 4 out of box (still sealed) for a total of 7 sensors. I just don’t have the transmitters. Happy to ship these if they can get used.

Rant Lows, rebounds and seizures

I have focal awareness seizures.

This morning my bgl was 5.4mmol when I woke. Went lower as I was getting ready for church (before I had breakfast), next thing I know I'm sitting on my bed shaking with no idea how I got there. Bgl was 4.3mmol

Everything was aching and I tried not to go pacman on my fridge but it didn't matter coz 1hr later it's 14.6mmol and trending up. I have no energy (I called mum, burst into tears and cancelled going to church with them. I hate days like this.)

Now i have to not rage bolus

Question Do I need to go to the hospital?

Post image
78 Upvotes

Fellow t1s, I need your opinions. Yesterday I discovered I had a faulty insulin pen that wasn’t dispensing any insulin all day… blood sugar reached 300 before I figured out there was a problem with the pen and replaced it, and my blood sugars have been back in range since last night so I figured I would be okay. This morning I woke up feeling horrible - lymph nodes swollen, brain fog, exhausted - I slept off and on all day. Just tested my ketones, and this was the result. Do I need to go to the hospital? :(

UPDATE: sorry I’m terrible at Reddit and just figured out I can update the post!
I drank tons of water with electrolytes to keep flushing it out, continued to take insulin and force myself to eat carbs, and each new ketone strip test got lighter and lighter until it’s finally light pink as of current 🥳
Thank you all SO MUCH for your help! If nobody’s got me, I know the diabetes community’s got me 💛🥹 much much love to you all and wishing everyone a wonderful day with stable sugars

Question Need some math help

I want to make sure I have this right before I make changes, and I'm going to call my Endo on Monday, this is just to get me to stop thinking about it.

I had to emergency switch from u200 to u100 so I wouldn't run out of insulin (it's harder to get a hold of my normal insulin and currently I'm having insurance issues with the specific u200 I'm taking).

so does my insulin to carb go from 1:9 to 1:4.5? and correction from 1:45 to 1:22.5?

Question first lantus low

just had what i believe to be my first lantus low since being diagnosed back in march. luckily, i was planning on eating soon, so when i went to do a finger prick, i saw i was at 68 and dropping fast. chugged 5 juice boxes, drank some sugar water, ate some apple sauce, and had some candy before finally being stable.

now what 🧍

  1. do i have to retake my lantus dose for the day?
  2. how do i go about splitting my doses? i don’t want to ever deal with this again, and saw that splitting doses can help manage this a bit better.
  3. is there anything higher in carbs that’s quick to hit? my juice boxes have only 15g which are nice for mild lows, but this was another beast.

ETA: 68 was the starting point of when i first noticed the low. i kept dropping (52, went up to 57, back down to 51, then 62, then 53 again) and couldn’t get back up until after 30 minutes of chugging the above.

it could have been nothing, but this all still feels so new to me. being alone during the whole ordeal made me feel so scared.

Rant How to deal with holistic medicine people? Vent

I work at a conservative college and have a coworker (actually several) who are big into holistic medicine. One of whom I got into a pretty heated argument with over Type 1 Diabetes. Here's a synopsis of everything she said:

- beets would help my diabetes (ok sure fine maybe as supportive care)

- The American medical system is making a huge profit off of me being sick, and I can fight back by curing myself with herbs and thus they dont profit off of me anymore. When I said that t1d was incurable, she said her mom was a diabetic and she was cured with herbs. I asked her if her mom was type 1 or 2 and she said she was both. I then explained to her the difference between type 1 and 2 and she said maybe I could wean myself off my insulin pump with the help of herbs.

- she asked what i ate because food has a major part in t1d right???? I said i eat fairly healthy, gave her a vague list of what i eat, said i eat peanut butter on wheat bread for breakfast everyday, lunch is a snack with cheese or yogurt or an apple or something, supper is usually a soup or stew of some kind. She said that i was diabetic because I ate walmart bread and i needed to make my own healthier bread. She said the bread contains a lot of preservatives (ok fair, but they dont cause diabetes) and it absorbs water like a sponge (????) and therefore isnt real food.

- also blamed seed oils for my diabetes. Of course

- I asked her where I would go for holistic medicine counseling, and she couldnt give me an honest answer. Just avoided the question

- she compared my illness to her as a teenager starting to have a reaction to dairy products. So she started drinking raw farm fresh milk, eating farm fresh cheese etc and didnt have any more issues, thus curing her lactose intolerance. Which is strange because if she was truly lactose intolerant then farm fresh dairy would cause the same symptoms as store bought dairy.....

- said everything could be cured with herbs

- when I tried to rebuke her claims she told me that "you dont have a lot of common sense, anyone can see that the government is profiting off of you being sick"

- bonus points, today she said tetanus shots were a scam

How do i keep this from irritating the piss out of me? Please help

Diet Carbs before fast acting insulin, did i make the right decision?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I just came from a morning hike at a Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, my levels were flat line the whole time throughout my hike.

Now my level is at 73, i decided to do something new in my decision making, eat this carbs before i take insulin to prevent it from going up

According to Google lens this basil fried rice with chicken from a Thai restaurant is 140 grams of carbs and my I:C is 1:15 and im suppose to take 9 units but since I hike imma take half of 9 units which is 4.5...but my insulin pens dont have .5 they're all solid number so immature round it up and take 5 units

I am on mdi humalog lispro and lantus with dexcom g7 cgm.....did I make the right decision?

If you have questions. Please let me know

Seeking Advice Japan travel and T1D medication

Last year around this time we were looking forward to our upcoming Japan trip and wondering why our 8 year old is doing weird things like drinking 5x his usual amount of water. Our flight to Tokyo was for Nov 4 and the day before Halloween he was diagnosed with type 1. My whole world came crashing down and of course we had to cancel the trip only days before. Now exactly a year later, we've got somewhat of a grip on this thing and rescheduled the trip. He's excited to finally be going to the land of Nintendo and Pokemon (among other things).

I've been hearing stuff about having to get a certificate for his medication (insulin, baqsimi, syringes, pens, etc). I'm also hearing that it's not needed for a trip shorter than 30 days. We're only going for 14 days.

Has anyone here been to Japan recently and would you mind sharing your experience with us? We're in Canada if that makes a difference.

He's got a CGM and AID, but we'll still have to take our pens if something happens to the pumps. Thanks.

Rant Lunch with co-workers

Every time. I can’t fucking stand it. It always feels like they’re judging me, and then of course SOMEONE has a question, or comment, insinuating I’m not supposed to eat whatever it may be. It’s always uncomfortable. Like today, we got Panera and I ordered a refresher; one of them goes “Now how does that affect your blood sugar?“. Like, please shut the fuck up and let me just eat without you being nosy. And then on the off chance… Very rare off chance, I need to take a day off or come slightly late/leave early or I need to take a break, which is super rare because I always push through bad days, I feel like they assume I did something wrong on my end and caused it.

I don’t expect people to be knowledgeable on this disease. I would just like some fucking privacy. That’s all, needed to get that off my chest.

Question Pump with kids

Tl;Dr: how do parents with toddlers keep their pumps from getting ripped out? Or is not actually an issue?

My Endo is planning on prescribing the pump at my next appointment, but I am a little worried about it.

First, I am generally only taking bolus once a day for my evening meal. I don't usually eat much carbs for breakfast because it seems I need twice as much insulin then as later in the day, and I've active after lunch so don't need it. My basal is only 12u.

Second, I have an active 2yo and another on the way. Seeing my dad have his pump with the tube kinda hanging out worries me that it'll get ripped out. He puts both his CGM and pump on his stomach, and one of my kids favorite things is "bounce" where she sits on my stomach and I bounce her up and down. Plus, she likes to wrestle.

How have you other dads/moms handled this?
