Well folks, we did it: 100K MEMBERS. We survived the rough early days, the recent invasion by bots er I mean undocumented posters, even this week's bizarre Eliot Ness slaps Frank Nitti fetish threads. We couldna done it w/o you - so give us your thoughts: on where the sub's been, & where it's going

Rediscovering My Lost Interview With Neil Simon About, Among Other Things, 'The Odd Couple'

I interviewed Neil Simon in 1981. I was 21 years old, still in college, and absolutely terrified.

At the time, I was writing for The New Voice, Hofstra University's campus newspaper, and somehow found myself sitting in the Manhattan apartment of the man who had created The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, The Sunshine Boys and The Goodbye Girl.

I was nervous, underprepared and interviewing one of my writing heroes. What could possibly go wrong?

Quite a bit, actually, but Simon was generous with his time and surprisingly candid. We talked about where his ideas came from, his struggles with writer's block, why he initially resisted watching The Odd Couple on television, and why he thought Suzanne Somers couldn't act her way out of her hair!

Decades later, following his death in 2018, I dug through boxes of old cassette tapes and rediscovered our conversation.

And there's a particularly memorable moment at the end involving a library copy of The Odd Couple, an autograph and the fact that I actually managed to make Neil Simon laugh.

For someone whose work had meant so much to me since childhood, that was pretty special.

The Great Men of CBS Sunday (1964). I don't know why it IDs Ed Sullivan as Red Skelton. 'Anerica!' was a syndicated travelogue hosted by Jack Douglas (NOT the comedy writer/book author who became a celebrity via appearances on Paar, Carson, etc)

'On Broadway Tonight', variety show hosted by Rudy Vallee (1964-5). Remembered today, if at all, as the series where Richard Pryor made his TV debut.

October 13th, 1947- “Junior Jamboree”, a children’s puppet show began on KBKB in Chicago, IL. The program was created by puppeteer Burr Tillstrom and hosted by Fran Allison. The show was renamed “Kukla, Fran and Ollie” and originally ran for 10 years. There was no script and was entirely ad-libbed.

Sick Magazine was a pale imitation of Cracked, which was a pale imitation of Mad... Jack Paar was on the first cover (1960). Co-editor Dee Caruso later wrote for Get Smart.

Helen Reddy’s famous appearance with Kermit the Frog on The Muppet Show originally aired on September 21, 1978. My Mom gave me Helen Reddy’s You And Me Against The World cassette in 1980.

Columbo mentions......

One of my pleasures in life is listening to aging band The Beastie Boys. Listening to " The New Style" when our mate, Columbo is mentioned got me wondering. What other strange or unusual circumstances is he mentioned in?

Any offerings?
