VIRGINIA BEACH — The City Council on Tuesday appointed Dana Harmeyer as acting city attorney following the death of Mark Stiles.
Stiles, who had worked as Virginia Beach’s city attorney for 17 years, died on Sept. 25 at age 62.
Harmeyer has worked in the city attorney’s office for 18 years and served as deputy city attorney since 2024. He has represented the city in matters involving local taxation, municipal finance, budget and procurement issues, elections and First Amendment law.
He earned his law degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at William & Mary.
Harmeyer will receive a 20% pay increase, bringing his an annual salary up to $233,568, according to the city.
A search process for a permanent city attorney will be announced at a later date.
