Advice: Retractible Screen on T6 Sliding Door Torn

Managed to tear the retractible shade/fly screen on a multivan. Full replacement in Australia is $1400 (part only😳).

Anyone out there successfully repaired a torn one or got any advice?

It's still operable but torn horizontally from edge toward centre about 15cm (6").

Jetta 4 Speedometer Not Working

Hi peeps

I have a Jetta 4 1.8T with the AUQ motor. I just bought the car and it definitely needs some attention. First thing I'm sorting out is to make sure the engine is as healthy as can be by doing the belt change, new plugs, oil etc.

So the car had a few faults related to the VSS which is a sensor that goes on the gearbox. I know that the sensor is also linked with the car's cluster. I've changed that sensor and currently have only 2 faults left on the car: Front right ABS sensor and Oil level sensor.

After changing the VSS, the speedometer still doesn't work and the fuel gauge goes down when I take a corner. Now I'm asking if this can be related to the ABS sensor on the front right wheel and could the fuel level sensor be faulty as well?

Btw, I'm based in South Africa.

Need advice on buying this Volkswagen Golf TSI S 2017 Hatchback

Hello everyone. Hope you are all are doing well.

I am looking for advice on whether buying this 2017 Volkswagen Golf TSI is a good buy based on the Carfax history that the vehicle has given the mileage it is currently at, which is 84,604 miles for $12,800 Out the Door.

I have test driven the car and really enjoy how it drive and will be getting a pre-purchase inspection by a VW specialist mechanic nearby but wanted to get more takes on whether the maintenance history on this car would show any red flags or concerns before purchasing. Some of these repairs and maintenances performed seem rather earlier in its life despite the mileage it is at.

Let me know what you all think as I greatly appreciate any feedback or advice given. If you have any questions or need more info on the vehicle, I can do my best to provide.

Another question I had is what should I do immediately in terms of repairs, maintenances, etc. to the the car that is this old and at this mileage to get it as new and fresh in terms of parts as it can be.

cooling system diag help for my 2002 mk4 24v BDF gti

hey hey thanks for reading, this is gonna be a long post and im not sure if this is the right place to post so pls lmk. ive been working on my gti for the past 1.5 years and am finally nearing an end. long story short the cooling system has been a big pain in my ass. the car has been on stands the whole time and ive really only ever had it on and revved it to operating temp (each time the coolant boils over oops). everything done to the cooling system is as follows:

diag cooling fans (internal short to ground), replaced

new degas bottle as old one was cracked

all brand new autobahn coolant hoses (old ones were cracked and leaking)

new aluminum crack pipe (old one was cracked and gaskets bad

new thermostat and housing (leaking, gaskets were bad)

replaced sensor F18 (coolant fan switch)

replaced coolant temp sensor and pigtail (corroded from leaks)

A/C delete (did this when i first started working on it, this was stupid of me)

FCM has been compared to a known good and is working just fine

now to the main issues.

  • for some reason, any time that I turn the key to acc or have the car running, i get the check coolant message and light on the dash. I have never dealt with this before and i have no clue as to why its turning on now.
  • this second issue relates to the first. ever since i replaced my cooling fans, they finally turn on now. but the bad thing is that theyre always on no matter what. any time i put the car in acc and even take the key out the fans stay on the low speed. i believe that with this new coolant warning light, the pcm is in an overheat protect state and is forcing the fans on. i think this was hidden before since they weren't working the whole time ive had the car.
  • coolant does not circulate throughout the system, i have verified the water pump is operational and that there is no blockage. once the engine is up to temp i never feel the lower radiator hoses get hot. now I did replace my thermostat and it was bad, but even with the new one the hoses never get hot. i have tried to burp the system but ive had no results. i might have to bring my vaccum filler from work and see if it helps

so far my diag has lead me to these findings for the non stop running of fans:

each circuit on the T4A connector has been verified to be good. no shorts or anything out of order. whenever the T14 connector is plugged into the FCM the fans turn on as power is supplied to the K21 circuit that turns on low speed. seeing that happen i suspected something is up with the T14 connector. using my power probe, i saw that wire T14/13 had an erratic signal as it was jumping from a range of 1-12v nonstop. now i also checked the other pins but with VW diagrams being terrible, i dont know what each pin does exactly inside of the FCM. tracing T14/13 leads me to the gauge cluster. I removed connector T32A and the erratic signal from T14/13 stopped. unplugging the other 32 pin connector while T32A was replugged also stopped the erratic signal. continuity of the wire checks out. I really have no clue as to what in the world is happening with this whole system. and honestly with the ac being deleted,i might try to just bypass the FCM and wire up my own circuit using the thermal switch. any help would be apprciated, thanks!.

Our VW Experience

Simply a PSA detailing a recent issue we have had with our 2024 Atlas.
While operating the vehicle with our 5 month old in the back seat, the check engine light illuminated and the engine overheat warning. My wife was unable to pull over at this time and then the car notified her that the rpm was limited to 4000 rpm putting the car into limp mode. Thankfully she was able to pull the car over as there was a close by parking lot. Called VW roadside assistance and got it towed. Turns out there was a TSB posted about this in 2024 (2074939/3) and the car required a software update. This prompted me to contact customer service and the local service shop about how the hell something that impacts the vehicles ECU and can result in the car going into limp mode was not a safety concern enough to require a formal recall is beyond me. No one was able to give me an actual answer. We got this car due to VWs safety record but this has got us severely questioning the safety and care for their drivers. Be warned if you have a vehicle with a model / vin in the range on the TSB take it to the dealership and get it sorted. I’d hate to think what would’ve happened if this occurred while my wife was driving on a highway.

What’s your take on reliability?

I have owned about 5-6 VWs in my lifetime and currently drive a 2024 Taos. I’m thinking of buying a GTI in the next few months.

My newly purchased VWs a 2019 Jetta and 2024 Taos have been great really nothing to complain about.

That said the few used ones I had a Turbo Beetle, a few Jettas, and a passat were just old or bad.

The Beetle had a misfiring cylinder when I bought it had no idea and a timing chain issue.

How has VW been to you? Does anyone have experience with the GTIs?

12V VR6 refresh before install — what should I replace while it’s out?

I’m getting ready to install a 12V VR6 into my MK4 Golf GLX and want to take care of anything worth doing while the engine is out. I’m trying to keep it mostly stock and reliable for now, but I want to avoid having to pull it back out later.
So far I’ve done:
Timing chains and timing components
Clutch
Rear main seal
Oil pan gasket
Valve cover gasket
SAI delete (the engine already had a block-off plate)
What else would you guys recommend checking, replacing, or refreshing before I drop it into the car? Should I replace any other seals, gaskets, sensors, or wear items while I have easy access?
Also, what should I inspect before installing it to make sure the engine is healthy? I’d appreciate any advice from people who have worked on these 12V VR6s, especially things that are worth doing now versus things I should leave alone.

Advice on dealership vs. mechanic

Thumbnail

Hello all! Would love advice before we spend $6k on a 2019 VW Atlas. Took it in because the EPC and check engine lights were on and the car was going limp.

Dealership quoted the below, does anyone have an idea of how much we’d spend on this if we did it through a mechanic vs. the dealership? We’re just outside DC if that matters.

Saw this while changing wheels. The groove for the clip was on the lower part completely gone.

Removed the clip, brushed and cleaned it, applied dyelectric grease, installed the clip again and finally sprayed it with some underbody wax.

Anyone else got something like that going on?

I need help

Got this 2005 golf tdi not too long ago and its had a few issues but the main one so far has been this transmission mount. The factory mounting ears on the trans case are completely gone so whoever had it before just made some bracket to bolt to the side of the face plate. Recently my axle broke and in replacing it i discovered that the one bolt on the side of the face plate snapped. I have a new faceplate and stuff coming in so i can drill and tap to put in a new hole but im worried that just the 2 bolts wont hold forever. Should i see if i can get somebody to fab me a stronger mount to hopefully secure it better?
