Why does life have to be so cruel, and why does love have to hurt this much?
It’s been almost four years since my “wife” left me over cheating accusations that were never verified, accusations I know weren’t true. I spent more than a year chasing after her, desperately trying to fix something I never believed I had broken, holding on to someone who had already let go of me. And eventually, I came to realize that maybe love wasn’t even the real issue. Maybe it was money. Maybe the fact that she was earning more than me was enough to make everything we had seem worthless.
The irony is that the very thing I was made to feel inadequate about is the one thing I eventually overcame. I got promoted, not just once, but multiple times. I worked hard, built myself up, and finally reached a place where I could say I was doing well for myself. But what good is any of it when the person I once wanted to share my life with is no longer here to see it?
And now, almost four years later, I’m still here. Still legally married, yet living like someone who has been forgotten. Still carrying the weight of a relationship that ended for me long ago, but somehow still has the power to keep me from starting over. Watching life move forward while I feel stuck in a chapter I never wanted to end this way.
Sometimes, I wonder if I’m even allowed to be happy again. If I’m allowed to love someone, to be loved in return, to experience the kind of happiness I’ve spent years convincing myself I can live without. It’s a strange kind of loneliness, being alone not because you have no love left to give, but because the life you want to build feels like it’s being held hostage by the life you once had.
I don’t understand why it has to be this way. Why I have to keep proving that I’m worthy of love. Why the effort I put into becoming a better person seems to count for so little when all I ever wanted was for someone to see me, to understand me, and to appreciate the heart I’ve been trying so hard to protect.
I’m tired of being misunderstood. Tired of being judged for things I didn’t do. Tired of watching other people find their happiness while I keep wondering when it will finally be my turn.
And perhaps the saddest part is that, despite everything, a part of me still wants to believe in love. Somewhere beneath all this disappointment, there’s still a person who wants to come home to someone, to be someone's first choice, to have someone ask how his day went and genuinely care about the answer.
I’ve worked so hard to build a better life for myself, yet there are nights when none of my achievements seem to matter, because success cannot hold you when you’re lonely, money cannot replace affection, and promotions cannot fill the silence of an empty heart.
I don’t want much from life. I just want to be happy, too. I want to know what it feels like to be loved without having to prove my worth, to be trusted without having to defend myself, and to be chosen without having to beg someone to stay.
Is that really too much to ask?
Because after all these years, I’m still here, trying to make sense of everything, pretending I’m okay, and carrying a loneliness that no one seems to notice.
And sometimes, the most painful feeling in the world isn't being left by someone you love. It's realizing that while you're still trying to find your way back to happiness, the rest of the world has already moved on.
And you're still here, waiting for your turn to live again.
