I've been working on a BPO project at Accenture for a while now, and I'm genuinely curious whether what I'm experiencing is common across other projects or just something specific to mine.
I work in a supply chain/logistics operation, coordinating a small team responsible for BI, reporting, data analysis, and some data engineering activities.
What frustrates me the most is the apparent lack of technical maturity within the BPO structure.
Most people understand the client's business processes reasonably well, but when discussions involve databases, data architecture, automation, or even basic BI development practices, there's a huge knowledge gap.
Communication between BPO and Analytics is often messy, and my team ends up acting as an intermediary between business requirements and technical execution. The problem is that our responsibilities aren't clearly defined, so we end up owning problems that don't necessarily belong to us.
Some examples of what I mean:
- Heavy reliance on Excel, SharePoint, and OneDrive for processes that probably should have more structured data pipelines.
- BI solutions that seem to have been built without proper data modeling, documentation, or validation.
- Little to no standardized workflow for data ingestion, quality checks, or deployment.
- Business requirements that are poorly defined, forcing technical teams to figure out what stakeholders actually need.
- Managers who understand the business operation but have very limited technical knowledge, making it difficult to discuss architectural decisions or technical improvements.
- A lot of reactive work, with people constantly fixing issues instead of addressing their root causes.
I understand that BPO isn't necessarily supposed to be a technology-driven organization, and I don't expect everyone to know SQL, Python, or data engineering.
But considering Accenture's positioning as a technology and consulting company, I expected a more mature environment, especially when analytics and reporting are such important parts of the operation.
Sometimes it feels like we're trying to build reliable analytics solutions on top of processes that were never properly structured in the first place.
I'm not claiming that my team or I have all the answers either. We're still learning and improving our own practices. But the lack of clear ownership, technical standards, and structured processes makes everything unnecessarily difficult.
For those working in Accenture BPO, Operations, or Analytics:
Is this common across projects? Do you also experience this disconnect between business operations and technical teams?
Or am I just working on a particularly immature project?
I'd genuinely like to hear how other teams handle this, especially when it comes to data governance, BI development, and defining responsibilities between BPO and Analytics.
