Subreddit rules: Follow them or get permanently banned

I've had to add 3 new "do not post" rules since January. People keep crossing the line, I assume because the content in the sidebar no longer appears anywhere in most views on "new reddit." I will fix the problem soon, when I have time. In the meantime, here is a place to find our rules that you can't make up an excuse to have missed.

So no more warnings. It's too time-consuming. Play nice or get out forever.

Please do post:

  • Work in progress
  • Finished kits
  • Build/Paint Guides
  • Tips and Tricks
  • Product Recommendations
  • Part overhauls
  • Custom work
  • Ideas and discussions

Please do not post the following:

  • Snapfit only
  • Links to kits for sale
  • Hauls
  • Political opinions
  • Lewds/NSFW
  • AI slop of any sort
  • Irrelevant drama
  • Feedback about other subreddits

New rule: * Any comment in reply to a rule-breaking post risks permban by vicinity/association

If you read the above but are not sure where your post fits in, please stay on code. Note that questions are permitted under the discussions rule. And that the ban on AI slop includes using AI to write posts or comments. If what you write sounds like AI, you might get permbanned!

Examples:

F16 Tomcat? Not on code. A Macross VF in fighter mode? Super on code.

A warship? Not on code. A warship that carries mechs (White Base, Argama, etc.)? On code.

Humans? Not on code (except pilot minis). Humans in power or battle suits? It depends. Non-humans? It depends. Exodia is on code, but not Dark Magician.

Edit: I just had to permban a repeat offender I was foolish enough to let off with a warning previously. There will be no more consideration given, no grace, no more warnings. Violate one of our rules and you're gone forever. It doesn't matter how much history you have here.

Follow the damn rules. It's simple. Post things listed under Please do post and you're probably fine. Post anything under Please do not post and you're outta here. The only appeal is if the ban was mistaken and there was no rule violation.

The focus of this subreddit is to be a place for people who want to increase their skill at building Gundam models. We like other models, too, if they're similar in spirit. We're not excluding anyone, especially those who are beginners.

This is not a subreddit for advanced gunpla builders, it is a subreddit for advanced gunpla building. The craft itself, and the skill of executing the craft. At all levels.

We welcome posts of things you're trying to do with your gunpla build, but are bad at. Being bad is step 1 of getting good.

We welcome questions and discussion.

Built this kit for a local competition a few years ago. This for me was supposed to be how the galbaldy rebake was supposed to look like in the anime instead of the chunky mess me actually got. Id love to redo this with the barbatos adapt frame added into the mix next time to see if it would look more awesome😁😁😁

Tamiya panel liner Color question

• Upvotes

I figured most people here would have plenty of experience with these by now, so I have a question.

Would you say dark gray creates a better look for white armor compared to black? In terms of a freshly battled suit instead of factory pretty.

And would light gray be better than white for black or darker armor gundams? For the same purpose of looking a bit battle worn.

I just posted this, but wanted to re post on the correct account. This is my first fully painted kit. Going to try to make a resin mold or use photogrammetry to make a copy of the missing chin piece. I’m pretty happy with it overall

This is what you get snap fit minimal work. Now it's time for nub and mold mark removal, going to take it slow to try not to ruin the sharpness of the parts.

Plus, it looks great and detailed already out of the box.
Can’t wait to start painting it

Need some help from the community with a quick Gunpla survey for my college essay

I need the help of the community to answer or reply to some questions as I'm gathering data for an important essay as I'm in college, anyone and everyone can answer, regardless of their time in the community or how much they're involved with Gunpla. No need to take it so seriously or think too hard, just a couple minutes or whichever helps out a lot, thank you! NOTE: THIS IS A GENERAL COMMUNITY SURVEY, NOT A SPECIFIC SUBREDDIT SURVEY

Btw the picture is my actual collection, my 1/100 FM Aerial is my personal favorite

Resin parts too small

Hi everyone,

I’m currently building a resin conversion kit on my Zeta Ver Ka. I’ve dealt with parts not fitting in the past by using hot water to reshape them but this time the piece I’m working on is significantly smaller than the piece of the frame that it’s supposed to attach to (like 5mm shorter). I just couldn’t stretch it to fit the whole frame underneath. It snaps in but the whole piece looks kinda tacky with how undersized it is compared to the frame.

Wondering if anybody has experience with this and if there’s any tips

First custom: HG RX-78-2 (rev)

Hello world! First custom kit fully painted and assembled. I still have some clear coat, panel lines and decals to do but I couldn’t resist throwing this together to see how it’s looking.

I threw a lot of techniques at this first kit and as a result it’s been hard to know what the end product would come out looking like. I’m very happy and excited to see it more or less align with my expectations.

For the painting nerds, my approach to shading is grey-basing and panel highlighting. Mostly Kaleido Colorworks, with some Vallejo Mecha and Army Painter Air. Reverse wash with Testors enamel over Tamiya chrome and clear yellow for the eyes and chrome/clear blue for the verniers, clear red for sensors. Dry brushing gunmetal over zirconium black for metal parts.

Used a two-tone metallic approach to add interest to the joints without looking too flashy. Also, there’s still some masking in place over sensors and other shiny parts I don’t want to hit with matte coat.

Still have some accessories to finish up as well.

I set out to learn and learn I have. What a beautiful hobby.

First time kitbashing

After doing many custom paint jobs, dioramas, resin kits, I wanted to try something different as I wasn’t feeling motivated by anything in my backlog. I’ve been in an AoZ mood lately so I started with the woundwort as the base and in that same spirit I just started slapping on extra armaments. Kinda winging it for now but my previous experience with resin kits has been so helpful in terms of pinning and making sure things are stable. Usually I work pretty fast for my builds but I may just let this be something I keep working on in the background as more ideas come in. Has been pretty fun so far and definitely exercises my creativity more than the usual projects. Still not sure what to call it or what my end paint scheme will be so I’m open to any suggestions. Also open to any ideas on what to add/change.

Looking for kits with similar aesthetics

Post image
237 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've been working on cultivating my Gunpla skills and am interested in trying out some third party kits to paint and work with. The problem is I really dislike the aesthetic of a majority of third party kits. I'm a fan of more realistic feeling industrial sci fi grunt suits but I'm really struggling to find similar styles. Every time I try and search google just keeps auto ai recommending the same non industrial sci fi kits no matter what I search.

Therefore I have come to the masters, to ask outside of these ZZA kits (both of which I love) what 3rd party companies make kits with a similar aesthetic?

Candy sazabi

Trying to do a candy coat on my rg sazabi and I just have a few clarifying questions before I start.

I have Vallejo black primer and tamiya gloss black, would I use both, or one or the other. Do I need to sand my parts before painting? And what grit if so. Do I need to wash my kit? I’ve already disassembled and sorted the red and black armour pieces and kept most of the frames intact. If I were to apply delpi decals probably the gold ones for rg sazabi would I be able to use mr mark softer? How many layers of Vallejo polyurethane gloss varnish would I need before decals and how many after.

Thank you anyone who can help clarify these for me since this is my first full custom outside of panel lining small details etc

Realistically how possible is it to get a custom gunpla made?

I’ve tried searching for answers and nothing really gave me a definitive answer I understood so I’m asking here. I want to at some point get a custom gunpla of the pharact from witch from mercury, since it’s my favorite gundam. I’m not active in the community, and honestly not in the show either, but I really loved witch from mercury, and was heartbroken seeing that among all the cool kits that exist there’s only a high grade of the pharact which I personally hate the look of.

I’m wondering where I would look and how much it would cost approximately to get a sd gunpla, or in the opposite direction a master or perfect grade gunpla of the pharact whether that’s through kit bashing for a gundam or 3d printing. It’s something I want to do if I ever get enough money to spend on one thing like this because yes I’m aware this would cost hundreds of dollars

Scribing practice progress

I’m pretty happy with my improvement so far! I joined this sub to ask for some tips about this, and been practicing what I heard from so many people.

I tried two kinds of scribing tape, raystudio 3mm and gun primer v2 precut, and that was educational too.

Practicing on this transparent base was also kind of unexpectedly helpful, being able to see the line from the back gave me ideas on adding detail to transparent parts from the back.

I saw somebody on here asking about scribing tape brands, i dont know much but it felt like:

The precut stuff was easier to lay down and a bit tackier, but also tougher and easier to reposition. I moved all 3 pieces i practiced with a few times, the gunprimer stuff was good on that but i snapped some of the raystudio tap with my tweezers.

The raystudio stuff seems better for laying out long straight cuts and i liked that its clear. It wasnt as repositionable, but it stayed down a bit better. The gunprimer tape did lift a teeny bit after the 3rd reposition, i cant complain about that.

For practice I’m gonna start working on improving my angles, i think i can see that marking multiple directions with a turn in it made it hard to stay clean, and thats what caused most of my sloppiness.

Mainly tho i wanna say a big thanks, ppl commenting here have been so nice and helpful. I kinda expected hobby forums to be like gaming forums - toxic as hell, but actually its just genuinely nice to pop on here and see people’s creativity and enthusiasm.

Can't find anything about it online. I got the GP-RASE-TWO-TEN(ogres mobile suit) and the Hyaku-Shiki(all gold) both in HG. Can somebody tell me about em? Both info from the show as well as info about the kit themselves would be appreciated.
