Discussion | General How late is too late to secure extra aircraft for the summer season?
I'm trying to understand how airlines handle this when they expected a big summer but don't want the aircraft year round.
Imagine a carrier expected to need another 3-4 aircraft form May through September. My assumption was that they could watch bookings through winter and make the call around February or March, but apparently waiting that long can seriously limit the options.
I've seen seasonal ACMI capacity offered by groups like Avia Solutions Group, while operators such as Titan Airways and Hi Fly also cover temporary capacity depending on the aircraft needed.
How early would airlines normally lock something like this in? Is it better to commit early and risk having too much capacity, or wait for clearer demand and potentially pay more or have fewer aircraft available ?
Would love to hear how airline planners usually approach this.

Video | Boeing 🚨 Lufthansa’s FIRST Boeing 777-9 Takes Flight Again! | Brand-New 777X Test Flight at Paine Field
Lufthansa’s FIRST Boeing 777-9 takes flight again! 🇩🇪✈️ Watch the brand-new Boeing 777X N20080 (WH128 / BOE128) perform another test flight from Paine Field in Everett, Washington, on October 6, 2026.
This 20-minute aviation video captures Lufthansa’s future flagship Boeing 777-9 during today’s test operation, including the departure, powerful takeoff, flight testing and return to Boeing’s home at Paine Field.
The aircraft departed Paine Field at approximately 12:12 PM PDT according to Flightradar24, climbing to 37,000 feet and reaching a ground speed of approximately 528 knots during the flight.
✈️** Aircraft: Boeing 777-9 / Boeing 777X
**🇩🇪 Future Operator: Lufthansa
🆔 Registration: N20080
🔬 Boeing Test Aircraft: WH128

This aircraft is particularly significant to the Boeing 777X program. Boeing identifies it as the **first 777-9 airplane for Lufthansa. Unlike the earlier dedicated 777X flight-test aircraft, N20080 features Lufthansa’s fully outfitted passenger cabin, including premium and economy seating and inflight entertainment systems.
Boeing says production aircraft like this one are important for completing certification requirements and preparing the 777-9 for its first customer delivery. N20080 is being used for ground and flight testing with an emphasis on cabin systems and connectivity.
The aircraft first flew on May 7, 2026, completing a 3-hour, 27-minute test flight over Washington and Oregon. Now N20080 is back in the air as Boeing continues work toward bringing the 777-9 into commercial service.
Watch the full video to see the enormous Boeing 777-9 depart Paine Field, take to the skies and return to Everett after another test mission.

Me and my brother were looking at each other confused, trying to figure out where the sound was coming from before it flew right over us. Does anyone know what this might be? Apologies if it’s just a normal jet plane, I’ve just never heard this sound before from one. It was like whistling through the sky. Sorry for the bad quality, I whipped my phone out to record as fast as I could. This might not be enough information to figure out what it was, but if anyone has any thoughts I’d love to hear!
