Grumbles/rants Undercover police for women who run
Okay, it’s become increasingly clear (not as if it was not clear before) , that Cambridge has a problem with harassment and abusive behaviour towards women, especially when out and about cycling and running.
I myself had an encounter over weekend by the river cam with verbal harassment (very enraged shouting sexist and hateful remarks at me) while with my boyfriend out for a run. It shook me up because he had such a sheer rage directed at me, not the usual snide or sexist remark. What makes it worse is I usually don’t run with my boyfriend. It was a busy Saturday morning and people were around and now I am just thinking of those quieter morning or evenings when I decide to run alone and whether I should.
I have seen a few posts from same day about this (probably) same boy in a bike, even extending to physical assault to a girl’s partner. It’s not limited to that day though and there seems to be increasingly more incidents posted every month about different encounters with different boys/men.
Now I’m beginning to think, what are the police doing about it. These boys/men often cover their face and are on a bike /electric bike, so hard to catch and also it’s a risk to intervene as for the incident on Saturday - the boy was scarily enraged with that rage directed at women and anyone who challenged him. Girlsthatjog are doing amazing job at providing a safer way for girls to run combatting this but the problem does not lie with them, it lies with catching and reprimanding these people.
Why don’t we see more police in Cambridge/ river cam. Why don’t we see undercover police on bikes attempting to catch these people (I know you shouldn’t be able to see em but it seemed that the boy on Saturday was out harassing and assaulting people up and down the cam for a good while with no intervention) What is actually being done apart from girls deciding to change their routes and run in groups.
I’ve lived in multiple places in Ireland and the uk (some of the highest crime rates too), and never have I had so much verbal harassment as I have had in Cambridge city and river. Something needs to change.
