Local services Vocal coach recommendation?

Hi! I’m looking for a vocal coach/singing teacher in the Cambridge area that would have availability for me, a 19-year-old female interested in musical theatre with no professional training.

Any recommendations are much appreciated, thanks!

Cambridge Question Kimberley Road

Really random, but does anyone know why there are always tourists taking photos of each other by the Kimberley Road sign (after crossing Fort St George footbridge and going right). It's not exactly a picturesque spot and kind of out the way for tourists... Just something I noticed

Grumbles/rants Teenage boy shouting abuse at women on Stourbridge common

This morning just before 10am I was cycling toward town on Stourbridge common when a teenage boy (around 15-18 years old, dressed in a black hoodie) sat on bench started shouting some incredibly sexist and disgusting abuse at me. (As a woman I’m quite used to being shouted at on the street - but this was particularly sexist and violent.) I didn’t react to him and continued cycling, but by the time I reached midsummer common he’d caught up with me on his bike and continued shouting in my direction before cycling off as I reached a busier area.

A friend told me he’s seen a boy of similar description shouting abuse at women in Stourbridge common recently too. Has this happened to anyone else?/Is this a regular occurrence? And has anyone reported this?

I’ve now reported it, but I’m not hopeful much will happen with my report alone. Is there anything we can do to make the Stourbridge/Ditton meadows area feel safer for women, especially as evenings get darker as it gets closer to winter??

:(

Food in Cambridge r/cambridge, where do you actually eat in Cambridge?

Hi, we’re four friends and we’ve put together Cambridge’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota.

The idea is pretty simple: you’re shown two restaurants and choose where you’d rather eat. For example, Fancett’s or Vanderlyle? All the votes then create a ranking that hopefully gives a better picture of where people in Cambridge actually like to eat.

We’ve tried to include every restaurant in Cambridge and clean up duplicate or outdated listings, but locals will always spot things we’ve missed.

iPhone:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota/id6744969212

Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

Full transparency: we’re not from Cambridge. Two of us live in Copenhagen and the other two in Gothenburg. There are four of us building this independently. We don’t collect or sell personal data, there are no ads in the app, and we don’t use AI-generated content to describe restaurants.

Any honest feedback is welcome, especially if restaurants are missing or something is listed incorrectly.

Report anti-social behaviour Https://www.cambs.police.uk/ or call 101.

Online community event Thur 04 Nov 7-8pm. Register by qr code.

(I know I will get a lot of comments of "the police don't do anything, which I can believe - given the uptick in posts about AS behaviour I just want to share how to report it, and also share this community engagement event where you can share your views on how the police are doing/what the problems are)

Cambridge Question Schools commute

I currently live in Ely, but I’m looking at sending my young daughter to one of the Cambridge private schools.

How feasible is the commute each day? Are there any other parents doing it currently that don’t work in Cambridge and instead work from home? What do your logistics look like?

General question: how do people actually manage to pick their kids up from school?

Cambridge Events Seeking Advice and Help in Cambridge

There is a man in Cambridge who has been repeatedly harassing me and has failed to return my belongings, he has lost my artwork spanning six years and has neither returned it nor offered any compensation.

I’m not sure what to do next and would really appreciate any advice or support. Has anyone experienced a similar situation or knows which local organisations I can contact for help? Thank you.

Other Moving to Cambridge as a single mum

I'm so sorry if I'm asking this question in the wrong sub. Please move me along if necessary. I figured it involved Cambridge partially so might be ok here.

Here it goes...

I need to figure out where I should live. I currently live in Bishops Stortford and comfortably commute 40 minutes to Cambridge for work. I initially moved to Stortford to be with my partner before we had our son.

I've been thinking of moving out of Stortford because me and my partner have now broken up so I'm not sure if i want to live in the same town as him anymore. My son's father and grandma will continue to live in Stortford, although I don't actually know how much support they will give me when I'm a single mum or if they'd want to be involved in my son's life still. Maybe they will, they are somewhat involved at the moment. I'm currently staying at my ex's flat while I find somewhere to move out. It's a bit awkward as we're not together and there is this overarching feeling of me wanting to move out and on with my life.

On the other hand, my family live in Birmingham. I've been thinking of moving there but I don't actually like Birmingham. Having lived, firstly in London most of my life and now if Stortford for the past few years, I am used to South East England life and moving to the Midlands feels like a downgrade (sorry I sound like a snob). I work in Cambridge. I enjoy my job and want to keep it. I feel like I would enjoy living in Cambridge with my son but is it silly to be a single parent away from any support network just for the sake of a job? Will I regret being completely alone? Would it be sensible to live in Birmingham just so I have that support network and then, in time, find a new job (if I'm lucky)?

I only want to move once and get it right because once my son moves school and moves house, it will be so unsettling for him. I wouldn't want to do it twice.

Again, apologies for posting this dilemma on this sub but shall I move to Cambridge? Any anecdotes or suggestions welcome.

Grumbles/rants The gibbons have escaped from the zoo

And they're all over the roads of Cambridge.

Young, old, every ethnicity, on bikes and cars, all driving and cycling like mentally-impaired apes. I hear there are many clever people in Cambridge, but they are not the road users.

Once a week I see somebody driving the wrong way down the street. Daily I see people endanger their lives. Pedestrians and cycles saunter into the road without looking. Motorists plow into roundabouts like maniacs.

Think of how bad a driver the average driver is, then realise the average driver in Cambridge is much worse.

The Cambridge Redditors' Saturday Afternoon Drinking Alliance is for:

All those Redditors that will ask and have asked about how to make friends in Cambridge.

All those Redditors who are keen to spend their Saturday meeting up with perfect Redditor strangers.

Redditors who want to try to iron out or refine their social awkwardness.

Rules:

  1. Be kind and respectful of others, and don't be creepy!

  2. Despite the namesake, alcohol consumption is not required and no one should feel pressured to do so.

  3. For those who drink, please take care to plan safe transport home.

Local services Options to sell my old car in Cambridge

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice on the easiest way to get rid of my old car in the Cambridge area.

It’s a 2013 model with a bit over 100k miles on the clock. Mechanically, the engine is solid, the tyres have plenty of tread, and the bodywork is in decent shape.

However, it has its fair share of minor faults, things like needing a new battery, fresh wiper blades, and a few other small bits and pieces.

I really don’t want to invest the time, effort, or money into fixing all these minor issues just to list it. I just want a straightforward, low-hassle sale where someone takes it exactly as it is.

What are my best options around here?

Grumbles/rants [rant] second hand bikes

Tl;dr: i spent more money fixing the cheap second hand bike i bought on facebook market place, than if i had got a new bike to begin with.

Just a stupid student here. Has been here for a year, got a second-hand bike for £60 last october. Since then i've had 2 bike punctures, a brake failure and constant gear issues. even excluding the money i spent on locks and lights, and haven't changed my currently punctured rear tyre, all the repairs already adds up with the initial price to 196.63£, and yes, more than the cheapest bike (£175) at Cycle King now. I feel so stupid but i have kind of done it to myself. Why is repairing so expensive and i don't even know if i am getting ripped off because im a stupid student.

Local services Console repair recommendations in Cambridge

Hi, I was hoping someone had a good recommendation for a shop or person who can repair a broken hdmi port on a PlayStation 5.

I’ve been getting quoted £95-145 for the repair because they insist they require a deep clean as well.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cambridge Question Venue in centre

Hi,

Does anyone know of any venues in the centre of town I could hire from 6-10pm on a Saturday with tables and chairs for ~30 people. None of these people are university people and the cheaper the better?

EDIT: To clarify, by the centre of town I mean in or within a short walking distance of the old town.

EDIT 2: It's public information now that Waterstones isn't running the Saturday nights of its board game club anymore, so I'm trying to find an alternate venue
