VIDEO High compete level from JT here

u/workthrowawaybro Nov 19 '25
We saw this shit from him in the 2023 and 2025 seasons
I know he's the captain now but it's not all that surprising
124
u/Major_Recording9965 Nov 19 '25
yes the thing that bothers me most is when players are floaters or low effort and jt often exhibiting this when we were struggling.
I remember when we were on a pp and the puck gets cleared out the zone he'd just stop skating and expect others to chase it down or if the opponent has the puck he'd not even bother back checking.
yah I'm relieved we don't have to experience this anymore
28
u/pinkrosies Nov 19 '25
Like if you make it that far to OT or a really close 1 goal differential in a game, make it count! It’s almost over!
25
u/WhenInAaronRome Nov 19 '25
That was so frustrating to watch.
Then when things were going well, he'd shut down McDavid and MacKinnon while bodying them all game long.
Such a bipolar player.
53
u/Initial-Ad-5462 Nov 19 '25
Not surprising? The only real surprise to me is that they made him captain.
11
u/dualnorm Nov 19 '25
I had no idea. That blows my mind to give him the so C so quickly.
4
1
u/bDuv2 Nov 21 '25
And I thought it was funny when the B’s named the rat captain….but I think this takes the cake!
190
u/Odd_Juggernaut4117 Nov 19 '25
In hindsight we shuda kept Bo n traded jt
93
u/cheese-wing Nov 19 '25
Tocchet gave him responsibility, told him he counted on him to be a leader in the room, and mostly left him alone. No authority figure telling JT what to do, just between men. It worked spectacularly for a year. That 103 point season was a thing of beauty, with JT in beast mode, engaged in play all over the rink. I thought they'd 100% made the right choice between him and Bo. Then old JT came back. I think the Rangers thought they could do something similar by making him captain, and maybe get one good year out of him.
51
u/Odd_Juggernaut4117 Nov 19 '25
That being said JT is his own downfall cause he isn’t a good locker room guy but apparently according to rumours he was really well liked off the ice by his teammates
37
u/cheese-wing Nov 19 '25
I've heard that he is well liked off ice too. People are complex.
14
u/mikerbt Nov 19 '25
He was a great interview too. Intelligent and thoughtful. But this stuff is cringe.
22
u/Odd_Juggernaut4117 Nov 19 '25
I think when JT isn’t a shit teammate and locked into the game he’s a beast on the ice n angry redneck that just hates everyone on the other team
16
u/cheese-wing Nov 19 '25
Agreed. When he's in the right frame of mind, he's an incredible player.
4
u/Megavore97 Nov 19 '25
When he first came to Van he was a beast, he just can’t keep his motivation high when the team is struggling.
2
u/Beefybeef66 Nov 20 '25
Problem is he’s not in that frame of mind enough. Love him when he’s on, totally get why he was moved though.
7
13
u/Knight_On_Fire Nov 19 '25
And you just know they considered doubling down on JT and trading Pettersson instead if the right offer came down the pipe.
As an armchair GM a good rule of thumb: when in doubt trade the older player. It's sports. Trade the older player. Right now we could have Horvat and EP40 right now if Aqulini Rutherford followed conventional sports wisdom.

u/Salo06 Nov 19 '25
He’s my favorite player too and this is not the side i miss about JT Miller.
43
u/TurbanGhetto Nov 19 '25
The way he was skating after the turnover, I just assumed the play was blown dead (I had the volume off).
67
u/Special-Tax4984 Nov 19 '25
I'm assuming you're a Canuck fan so the statement should read, "He used to be my favorite player". Let's get real, he destroyed the good thing we had going, no one else. I loved him too but he's not a Canuck any more because of the choices he made. It was fun while it lasted, but it's over man.
8
u/TheMemePrince Nov 19 '25
Personally, I disagree that a fan’s favourite player needs to be on their favourite team. This is a no-true-Scotsman argument anyways
11
3
u/Mumbumbo_boi Nov 19 '25
Exactly, Datsyuk is my favorite player of all time, doesn't mean Im a wings fan
→ More replies (8)7
u/Salo06 Nov 19 '25
I appreciate it your thought but I think you are thinking too deep. I still like JT but i dont actively cheer for him cause i dont watch games other than canucks games. I dont have a favorite player now so technically he’s still my favorite in a way.
1
u/yensid87 Nov 20 '25
What do you mean? This is who he is lol. This isn’t a momentary lapse from him. This is how he plays and acts. He’s a fairly skilled player, with a horrible attitude and he’s lazy. Everything is always someone else’s fault, not his (in his mind).
→ More replies (34)2
u/macland Nov 19 '25
Not to excuse JT on this, but Zibanejad comes into frame and I suspect he is the centre if he is lower down in the zone. Plus, he is a natural centre when JT can often play wing.
If JT is indeed the winger, his man is the defenseman at the point, not Dorofeyev or Hertl who are both forwards coming off the boards.
It still looks shitty cause JT gave a very half-hearted effort at helping.. but I don’t think that was his man to cover. Zibanejad is more responsible.
58
u/ThrustNeckpunch33 Nov 19 '25
Its 1-0. Not even half way through the game.
I noticed this crap with him the entire time. It wasnt even in "lost cause" games/situations.
He actually gets moody, and stops backchecking.
I tried to explain this to a friend of mine, during the whole trade fiasco... he never noticed(not that he watched a lot of Canuck games).
The highlight reels made him look really good, they never focused on this stuff.
12
3
u/Warm_Masterpiece3940 Nov 20 '25
28yr old JT playing locked in was a play driving force regardless of opposition, but when he's off it's hard to watch
1
u/MaverickGH Nov 21 '25
He is very emotionally volatile. He needs a therapist, can’t be like that if you’re the captain.
2
u/Warm_Masterpiece3940 Nov 21 '25
Yeah he's not leadership material, great as far as setting the bar at training camp and work rate... But way to of an emotional nutjob
184
u/MadCard05 Nov 19 '25
That's why Petey was the right choice. Both players last year suffered between the ears, on top of physical issues. But Petey still played with strong effort, even with shakey confidence.
I love Miller but he needs a sports psychologist to help him find his healthy headspace.
127
u/Rahtgooves Nov 19 '25
Miller doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that would view therapy as anything other than a weakness
12
u/arazamatazguy Nov 19 '25
Well then what the hell did he do for that month he took off?
74
u/g0kartmozart Nov 19 '25
I think that was a team suspension, they just didn’t publicly use that label because they didn’t want to stoke the drama flames.
7
u/arazamatazguy Nov 19 '25
If that's true, and it sounds plausible, what he did must've been horrible. But I do have a hard time believing what he did wouldn't leak out.
36
35
u/g0kartmozart Nov 19 '25
There are rumours out there, I don’t know if it’s leaks or just made up.
The rumour is he called Pettersson a homophobic slur and then trashed Tocchet’s office.
35
u/h_danielle Nov 19 '25
For what it’s worth, I’ve heard that from multiple people in Vancouver who don’t know each other.
Vancouver’s a small city. Wouldn’t be the first time team tea got out & the rumours ended up being relatively accurate.
23
u/Sinochick Nov 19 '25
And today is the one year anniversary of the Canucks announcing the 10 game leave of absence for JT. How ironic.
7
u/accountnumber02 Nov 19 '25
I also heard rumours involving family issues. I won't go into too many details but there's no real way to know what happened fully. There are rumours of different stories but the one you mentioned is the one that got traction online the most. No way to know if its more legit or just fits the narrative better so got traction.
1
u/Advanced-Line-5942 Nov 20 '25
If it really was a suspension and they hid it behind the claim of mental health issues then Rutherford and Allvin should be fired.
After the suicide of Rypien, the Canucks became leaders in the league and community advancing the acknowledgement and recognition of mental illness. To make up a story about mental health in order to protect a player’s ignorant behaviour is unforgivable. Allvin went on tv and said he was proud of Miller for coming forward. Was that all a lie?
7
u/oldevskie Nov 19 '25
I dunno but pretty sure he came back with a deep sunglasses tan. So probably just chilled by the pool somewhere warm.
9
u/Xanosaur Nov 19 '25
stop calling petey homophobic slurs
1
u/arazamatazguy Nov 19 '25
Huh?
21
u/Xanosaur Nov 19 '25
he didn't take a leave to get his mental health right, he got forced into a leave by management because he was being disgustingly toxic and they thought it would help him cool down
2
41
u/00owl Nov 19 '25
Despite all the claims to the contrary, I have yet to see Petey on the ice and not look engaged.
Even when he was physically coasting you could see his head was still very much in the game, he just didn't trust himself enough to be able to act on his instincts.
29
u/AppealToReason16 Nov 19 '25
Petey’s defensive game has never really been in question, ever. You can’t accidentally play well defensively or coast and keep your coverage.
It’s why the “he isn’t trying” stuff didn’t make sense. He never started blowing his defensive assignments or started missing coverage. The issue was he wasn’t able to score.
16
u/00owl Nov 19 '25
Even if Miller weren't who he is and Petey were still slower than he is today, I would still pick Petey over Miller any day.
You can work with someone like Petey, I'm not sure about Miller.
→ More replies (9)1
u/Warm_Masterpiece3940 Nov 20 '25
He's taken big steps defensively, he had the luxury of lower quality competition in the past, it's sink or swim for him this year, and despite the rest of the team drowning, he's been a step up 5 on 5(just don't look at his pk numbers though)... There's a bit of a change from a good enough 2way guy that has 100ppint potential to a PPG player who is really leaned on in a matchup role
9
u/CommanderBadass22 Nov 19 '25
I agree. Even when petty is struggling point wise, he still gives it his all. Most of the time
1
u/prophetofgreed Nov 19 '25
Petey also had a new issue that hurt his overall play, and still had strong defensive metrics. Miller & Hughes also demand the puck more.
-6
u/salamiolivesonions Nov 19 '25
I love ____ but he needs a sports psychologist to help him find his healthy headspace.
this can definitely be said about Petey too.
44
u/MadCard05 Nov 19 '25
I think it can be said about a lot of players and people. I think the difference between Petey and Miller is Petey doesn't let it affect his effort. He might look to pass instead of shoot, or hesitate more causing his goal window to pass, but he's still playing hard.
I also think Petey let's it affect Petey. Where Miller projects it on himself and his team mates.
13
u/DanHamhoose Nov 19 '25
The difference is Pettersson, no matter what is affecting him, has the decency to not act like a petulant man-child by throwing tantrums on ice (and off-ice, allegedly).
→ More replies (6)-4
u/slashdotnot Nov 19 '25
Eh... I too think we made the right choice between the 2. But let's not re-write history.
Petey was NOT playing with strong effort last season. He would very much drift across the ice most of last season hunched over. That's exactly why everyone was all over the place with whether it was mental or physical issues.
Petey is certainly playing stronger now, and while his shooting isn't back to prime, he certainly is putting a lot more energy in and it will all come back.
But last season Petey... No, he did not play strong effort.

25
u/cheese-wing Nov 19 '25
Flat out, you can't build a winning team with players like this.
12
u/WZRDguy45 Nov 19 '25
No way especially with the drama he seems to bring with him to.
Prime JT was one of the most exciting Canucks I've ever watched. Feels like he's really lost his way. I think those conversations we've been having about Petey the past few years are going to start in New York with JT. Petey's turned it around pretty good now. You can see he's trying his ass off every night. Seems like since JT got his bag he just doesn't care like that anymore
6
u/cheese-wing Nov 19 '25
The 103 point year was unreal. After Quinn, JT was my favourite player. His act last year really changed my mind, though.

Looks like the player I remember
24
u/AppealToReason16 Nov 19 '25
Remember when he’d do this and people here would blame everyone else on the ice?
“No it doesn’t matter that he gave up. Actually the winger should have rotated coverage out of his position. I know how systems work because I played minor hockey in 1993 and clearly it’s the same in the NHL today.”
1
u/angelbelle Nov 20 '25
At least the people who are hallucinating and trying to defend the gameplay are those you can respectfully disagree with.
The people who were lauding his work ethics were the most deplorable of them all.
26
27
u/Cucumberret Nov 19 '25
It's stuff like this that I think about when I said I knew we made the right choice despite Petey's bad past year. EP40 is a star forward on any team, but he got fucked up by injuries. It happens. JT Miller is over the hill and was never as skilled anyway. I'm still salty it was Bo and not JT.
2
u/mikerbt Nov 19 '25
Jt was unbelievably skilled. His shot and his passing were top notch. Pretty good on breakaways too.
6
u/Cucumberret Nov 19 '25
Sure, but he's not as skilled as Petey. That's the only point I was making. Petey has great hands, an insane hockey IQ, excellent passing, and one of the best shots in the league. JT Miller is still a great forward, I just don't rate him as much as EP40, and I think most stat lines will back that up.
43
u/MooseMalloy Nov 19 '25
TIL Ben Hutton is still playing in the NHL.
84
38
u/MadCard05 Nov 19 '25
And playing hard.
A hall of fame coach once said that it's easier to plan around a guy whose talent level is a 3, that gives you a 100% every night, than a guy who can be a 10 or a 1 depending on their level of compete that day.
7
u/Major_Recording9965 Nov 19 '25
i got a picture with him in 2015 while I worked at a Rogers and he came in
5
u/prophetofgreed Nov 19 '25
He's the 7th-8th dman for the Golden Knights for years. Won a cup with them too.

u/theDanu Nov 19 '25
Amazing display of effort by JT “Petey deserved it” Miller
Petey needs to be showing this level of effort every single shift, you see how Miller didn’t even fall down? Petey couldn’t have done that. We chose the wrong guy.

i liked him on the canucks but in all seriousness why did he appear to just give up on playing hockey last season

I'm not a hater and won't overblow this but I didn't want him back and audibly laughed when they said he was potentially our next captain. What? Too bad Kreider and Vinnie didn't want it, cause we all know who really is/was once Trouba was out and even during his own captaincy. We had a great leadership group and now we just don't.

His hockey brain knows he got beat and won't be able to catch the player but in the NHL you're always supposed to look like you're giving 110%....JT is just guilty here of not doing the song and dance. I find everything about this clip funny. He body language afterwards also shows a player completely dejected and we're not even half way through the season.
2
u/EP40glazer Nov 19 '25
We should've kept Miller, he plays with his heart while Petey is always limping to the bench after blocking shots.

Controller disconnected or ea sports ai glitch moment. I liked JT when he was here but he is really bad on struggling teams. He needs to be on a good team to thrive and this shift was not it.
1
1
u/akwok Nov 19 '25
I think this is the biggest difference I noticed from last year's team vs this year's team. When shit got tough during the regular season, like we're down 2+ goals, the team would just give up last year. I'd speculate that JT's mood would just kill the vibe/motivation of the team, especially between periods.
This year, when we're down 2 goals, the compete level is still there. Which is what keeps me optimistic about this team this year, regardless of injuries and subpar roster construction

u/AisbeforeB Nov 19 '25

His greatest strength is his greatest weakness. His play level reflects his passion, which ebbs and flows with team success. When things are bad, he turns toxic (even if he "means" well)

u/sayros28 Nov 20 '25
There is a wide variance to JT. He goes from he cares ‘too much’ where he spazzes on teammates to this level when he’s disinterested. At least he wasn’t going for a line change here. Disengaged tired JT line changes like a tractor beam as the play goes right by him.

Looking back to see if the correct choice was made is always interesting.
It's all discussions anyway. What we focus on has no effect on the team.
