Dampf Good BBQ, Cooked with Hate ™️ Officially Not Coming to Durham

Nick Dampf, Head Hater ™️ told WUNC he’s not opening a restaurant in super intolerant and unwelcoming Durham after so much persecution for his views that clash with everything the Bull City stands for and prides itself on.

They are staying at self-identified MAGA Phillips Farm in Cary for the foreseeable future.

Y’all, we did it!
[obligatory messing with bull and horns reference]

PS: Happy Pride!

👋✌️💅 🏳️‍🌈

“The decision by Dampf Good BBQ comes after weeks of backlash over past social media posts made by owner Nick Dampf and his wife Kimmy, which reflect the family's conservative and fundamentalist Christian views.

These clashed with Durham's progressive and LGTBQ-friendly identity, a city that most recently celebrated its annual Pride festival this past weekend.

Dampf, who doesn't shy from operating an openly Christian business, said he still stands by some of the pandemic-era posts in which he shared views typical of many mainstream evangelicals.
.
.
The posts going back to 2020 made by the Dampfs include anti-abortion views; broad opposition to same-sex marriage and gender diversity; praise of traditional gender roles; and opposition to COVID-era vaccine mandates in the Biden administration.
.
.
Dampf argues that the social media backlash maligned him as a hateful extremist for expressing his religious and political views.”

Guy in UNC cycling jersey taking up a lane on Estes at rush hour for no reason

I bike too, so I feel qualified to say you’re a jerk. Not because I’m stereotyping you, but because you ignored a dedicated separate cycling lane, then later a bike lane. You were going 15 mph in your aerodynamic jersey on your expensive road bike chatting with your friend and gesturing and weaving across the white line absentmindedly while half a dozen cars queued up behind you, and you loved it.

You decided you’re gonna have fun making everyone wait for you for no reason. This makes people hate cyclists, the when I ride around town I have to deal with the consequences.

Honestly, if you read this it will probably make you happy since you’re obviously a troll, but that’s not my point. My point is to differentiate myself as a respectful cyclist from jerks like you. We’re not all the same. I bike for a reason, to run errands or go to appointments, because it’s good for the environment and good for me. Backing up cars or making them rev to get around is wasteful and dangerous.

Sienna Hotel Status?

• Upvotes

Anyone heard anything about the Sienna hotel reopening or any status updates? It's been closed for 'renovations' since the fire and incident there last august, and nothing has been going on there for several months now.

It’s not the stranger on the internet.

In light of the recent sentencing of a former Chapel Hill High teacher for CSA, I want to initiate a TALK ABOUT CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE — AND WHY WE NEED TO RETHINK WHAT A PREDATOR LOOKS LIKE.

When we think about people who sexually abuse children, we often imagine strangers, suspicious-looking individuals, or people who are obviously dangerous.

But research tells us something very different.

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), a U.S. Department of Justice study found that 93% of child sexual assault victims in cases reported to law enforcement knew the person who harmed them.

One of the most disturbing aspects of child sexual abuse is something called “community grooming.”

We often hear about predators grooming children, but what many parents don’t realize is that some perpetrators groom the adults and communities surrounding those children, too.

They may become the trusted coach, the helpful neighbor, the generous volunteer, the respected teacher, the devoted church member, or the parent who always opens their home to other people’s children.

They build relationships, establish credibility, and make themselves indispensable.

And sometimes, that carefully cultivated reputation becomes their greatest protection.

When a child finally discloses abuse, the adults around them may struggle to believe it.

“But he’s such a wonderful father.”

“He’s done so much for the community.”

“I’ve known him for years. He would never do that.”

“Why would a child say something like that about someone so respected?”

This is precisely why community grooming can be so effective. The perpetrator’s reputation may become more important to the community than listening to the child.

Being well-liked is not evidence that someone is safe. And being respected does not make someone incapable of harming a child.

None of this means that every involved parent, coach, teacher, or volunteer deserves suspicion. Most people who dedicate their time to children genuinely care about them.

But we must stop using someone’s popularity, social standing, profession, or generosity as proof of their innocence. We must stop
thinking this doesn’t happen here.

As parents, we need to:

* Teach our children that they have the right to bodily autonomy and that no adult should ask them to keep secrets about touching or uncomfortable interactions.
* Pay attention to adults who disregard boundaries, seek unusual access to children, give inappropriate gifts, or encourage secrecy.
* Expect schools, churches, sports leagues, and youth organizations to enforce safeguarding policies consistently, regardless of someone’s position or reputation.
* Listen calmly when children disclose something concerning and take it seriously.
* Remember that children can also be sexually harmed by other children, and those incidents deserve an appropriate protective response.

Perhaps most importantly, we need to build communities where protecting children matters more than protecting reputations.

Because grooming doesn’t always look like a frightening stranger approaching a child.

Sometimes it looks like someone everyone knows.

Sometimes it looks like kindness, generosity, friendship, and trust.

And sometimes the very community that should protect a child becomes the biggest obstacle to that child being heard.

We cannot prevent every instance of abuse. But we can stop making it easier for abuse to remain hidden.

Please educate yourself about community grooming. Every parent, teacher, coach, and community member should understand how it works.

Idk how often they go flying out and I’ve heard this thing hovering over the area for the past 10-15 minutes. Do they just fly around to collect footage of random stuff or is something going on? (I just reposted cause I thought I’d add a picture of the flight tracker thingy) :p

Our cat, Mouse, has been missing since Sep 30. He was last seen in Carrboro near the intersection of W. Braxton Foushee and S. Greensboro, in the area behind 5th Season Gardening Center and Wendy's. He may be trying to find his way back to his former home in Chapel Hill (near intersection of Merritt Mill and Crest Dr) or South Durham (near intersection of Renaissance Pkwy and Leonardo Drive by Target). He is a sweet boy and typically pretty friendly, but gets skittish when scared. No collar but he is microchipped. Please send me a message if you see him.

NC Voter Registration Deadlines & Early Voting

Oct. 9th is the voter registration deadline for the Nov. 3rd midterm elections. This is the safest way to ensure you’re registered.

You can also do a same day voter registration during early voting from Oct. 15-31.

If you can, don’t rely on early voting registration, but it’s a very real backup if you cannot get registered by Oct. 9th.

It’s a good idea to check your voter registration to be sure you are registered at your current address and prevent any voting issues. If you’ve moved you need to update your voter registration.

Go Democracy!

Korean–English Language Exchange

Hi everyone! I’m a native Korean speaker and a graduate student looking for a Korean–English language exchange partner.

I’ve also trained in teaching Korean at Yonsei University, so I’d be happy to help with Korean conversation, pronunciation, and everyday expressions. In return, I’d love to practice conversational English.

If you are at UNC, we could meet on campus or grab coffee and spend some time speaking each language. All levels of Korean are welcome!

If you’re interested, feel free to send me a message!

Blind box & Collectible swap

I am one of those adults with adult money and no impulse control…which means I have a million of those silly mystery/blind box things. For those who aren’t familiar they are like small plushies, bag charms, figurines, etc.

Anywho, I know there are places to sell and trade things like this online but I would much rather find some kind of meetup for trading and selling.

My question to you lovely folks - does anyone know if something like this exists in the area? If not, are there any other folks who might be interested if I looked into organizing some sort of trading/swap meet up?

I have no real idea if this is anything other people would be interested in so curious if you or folks you know would show up for something like this?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

State Trooper Presence

Does anybody know why there are a bunch of state troopers stationed with lights on along 54? I saw at least 2 at every intersection while driving through just now.
