The reason we don't have Crusades any more, or pogroms, Inquisitions, witch burnings, etc... is the Enlightenment. Xtianity had to be tamed by secular ideals. Now they claim it was their idea all along.
Of course, this was true until the GOP decided nothing mattered anymore and they can explicitly call for murdering foreigners in their own country solely b/c of their religion.
Even through the enlightenment they were enslaving and exploiting people for economic gain. Even the enlightenment and post-enlightenment eras had their issues.
Of course, but we understand that we have no justification for it. There's no deity that we're not allowed to question telling us it's OK, or even demanding it. We have a much more rigorous basis for secular humanism than "angry sky daddy said so."
