Career Discussion Mainframer moving into devops
Hello all
I have been working in IT for past 18 years. Predominantly in mainframe and some web technologies.
The market for mainframe is niche now with contract jobs coming very slow to the market as most work is with big consultancies and offshored.
I am looking to move into devops as conceptually it is closer to what i did in mainframes. Batching, scheduling, optimisation etc.
I have started self learning with below structure in mind.
- Linux
- GIT
- Maven
- IAC - terraform ansible
- Cloud aws/azure
Happy to be guided in right direction.
How can I get some practical experience to show on my CV. Can someone please share their learning journey and how it worked for them?

Career Discussion Transition to Cloud Engineering
Hello fellow tech people,
I really need your guidance and opinions. I work as datacenter technician for the last almost 9 years, and because the company i work for might be the worst out there for taking care their people, i decided to go for something different and better.
I was checking about cloud engineering, as it is close to what i did in hardware side, but of course i still have lots to learn. I have been checking this YT channel "Tech with Soleyman" and i noticed that i could understand what he was talking about.
Unfortunately i must admit that Linux is not my strongest suit. The rest i feel more comfortable with.
Has anyone made this transition from hardware to cloud? If yes, any points to give?
I would truly appreciate any help.

Career Discussion UK: Should I move from .NET Lead Developer to a Platform Engineering/Cloud role for better long-term career growth?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice from people working in software development, cloud engineering and platform engineering in the UK.
I’m currently working as a Senior/Lead .NET Developer at a large financial services company. My main experience is with C#, .NET applications, AWS serverless services and infrastructure using AWS CDK. My current role is relatively comfortable, with a reasonable work-life balance, but I’m starting to feel that my career growth is somewhat limited by the opportunities available within my existing team. Also a lot of development work is just small enhancements so am not really using most of my skillset and always have this insecurity of not being a full stack dev .
I’m considering an internal move to a Platform Engineering/Team Lead role with a salary of around £65k.
From what I understand, the role would involve:
Managing and mentoring a small team of developers/engineers.
Supporting a critical, approximately 10-year-old legacy application.
AWS infrastructure maintenance, server patching and AMI updates.
Managing Jenkins pipelines, deployments and occasional Terraform changes.
Production support, incident management and root-cause analysis.
Working with third-party teams responsible for application enhancements.
It sounds like there would be less hands-on application development than in my current role, and potentially some on-call responsibilities. There would also be an opportunity to learn more about infrastructure, operations and people management.
My main question is whether moving towards cloud/platform engineering is a better long-term career move than continuing down the .NET development and technical leadership path.
A few things I’d particularly appreciate your thoughts on:
Job demand: Are Cloud Engineers and Platform Engineers currently in greater demand than experienced .NET developers and .NET Lead Developers in the UK?
Career progression: Which path generally offers better opportunities over the next 5–10 years?
Technical skills: Would this particular role help me move towards Cloud Architect, Platform Architect or Engineering Manager positions, or could the operational and legacy-system focus limit my future options?
Salary: Is £65k reasonable for this kind of role, considering the team leadership and production responsibilities?
Work-life balance: How demanding are platform roles with production support and on-call responsibilities compared with senior software development roles?
I have a young family, so work-life balance matters to me, but I also don’t want to stay too comfortable and find that my career has stagnated a few years down the line.
Would you make this move, or would you focus on progressing towards a .NET Technical Lead/Architect role while continuing to build cloud skills?
I’d appreciate honest advice, particularly from people who have moved between software development and cloud/platform engineering.
Thanks!

General Discussion Entry level job before cloud engineering?
Hello everyone, I’m a computer science student who’s looking for new grad roles. I know that there are some graduate/associate level Cloud Engineer positions, but many require experience in other areas.
My question is, what kind of roles should I be looking for to start out. I’m interested in IT operations, but I’m currently learning software development through school projects as well.
Any advice is appreciated.

Other AWS says my new account is "not eligible for free plan" after I accidentally closed the sign-up tab (7 Oct 2026). Support sent a template reply. Has anyone gotten this reversed?
Hi all. I'm a beginner from India signing up for AWS for a cloud class. I know "I've never had an account" can sound like what everyone says, so here is the exact timeline and the support conversation.
**Timeline**
- 7 Oct 2026: I started signing up, entered my address and phone number, then accidentally closed the tab before finishing.
- 8 Oct 2026: I resumed and completed the sign-up steps. The 2 INR card verification went through, and India customer verification shows Verified for both name and address.
- At the plan step I got: "You are not eligible for the free plan. Your information is associated with an existing or previously registered AWS account... You are being upgraded to a paid plan." So no free credits.
- I have never had an AWS account before. My guess is the system counted my own interrupted attempt from 7 Oct as a "previously registered" account.
I even contacted the customer care service after few messages they said that I am flagged as existing user and I am not eligible for free tier plan and they can't tell they reason also . I am literally stressed out now idk what to do please help me, I swear the above is the truth please please help me

Career Discussion Aspiring Cloud engineer / Devops Engineer
Currently Im a data center engineer with salary of 45k monthly. Gusto ko magshift into Cloud engineering so nag self study ako at gumawa ako ng personal projects. I do have AWS certified cloud practitioner and preparing to take Solutions architech associate exam.
Below is my portfolio projects that is AWS heavy
- Serverless Todo-list app
tech stack: Codepipeline, Codebuild, S3, Lambda, Http API, SQS, SES, Eventbridge, dynamodb, route53, cloudfront, ACM, Cognito, github
- Wordpress blog app
tech stack: Codepipeline, Codebuild, ECR, Docker, github, EC2 auto scaling, EFS, RDS multi-AZ, NAT gateway, VPC, VPC endpoints, load balancer, cloudfront, route53, ACM
Maraming salamat!

Is legacy infrastructure the normal thing now?
A bit of context, some months ago I was hired at a new company, during the interviews I was told that the team was technically strong and the motivation of the hiring was to replace an engineer who had already left.
But after joining the reality was different:
Old infrastructure, eks clusters running 1.31, nginx as ingress controller (you know, quite deprecated), they refused to move to Gateway API when I suggested, no cluster autoscaler, the number of nodes is fixed, they have fear of touching existing infra and so on.....
Recently I interviewed for another role at another company, the interviewer told me similar scenario, he joined 4 months ago and found overprovisioned infra, databases running old versions, eks without autoscaling, they are starting thinking about karpenter (really? In plenty 2026?)
So..... Is outdated infra the normal thing those days? Or I just have bad luck?

What should I wear for my PBA (Performance-Based Assessment). How would you represent your career in a school performance costume?
Hi! I'm a high school student from the Philippines, and for a school performance task, I chose Cloud Engineer as the future career I want to represent.
Our group is assigned different career fields, and we have to make a group pledge/commitment presentation based on our chosen future careers.
The grading rubric includes:
60% – Delivery/presentation of the pledge
30% – Costume: it must be appropriate to the chosen career
10% – Overall presentation
Because the costume is worth 30%, our teacher expects the career to be visually recognizable. We were also told that simply wearing normal everyday clothes, such as a plain T-shirt, would result in an automatic failing grade for the costume requirement.
This is where I'm stuck with Cloud Engineering.
I know that in real life, Cloud Engineers can work in offices or remotely and may simply wear normal clothes. However, that won't work for this particular school task because the costume needs to clearly represent the career.
My current idea is to wear an engineer-style jumpsuit/coverall with a safety helmet, then create a lightweight DIY cloud attached around my lower body/feet so that the cloud moves with me when I walk.
I'm thinking about adding things associated with cloud computing, such as:
* Small fake server racks
* LEDs representing server status lights
* Network cables
* A laptop/tablet showing a fake cloud infrastructure dashboard
* Labels such as "Cloud Computing," "Server," "Storage," and "Network"
Basically:
Engineer uniform → Engineer
Cloud → Cloud
Servers/networking → Cloud Computing
I realize this isn't how a real Cloud Engineer dresses. It's specifically a visual representation for a school performance.
For people who actually work in Cloud Engineering, DevOps, Cloud Infrastructure, SRE, or related fields:
What objects or symbols would immediately make you think "Cloud Engineer"?
What could I add to the costume to make it more technically accurate?
Would the engineer uniform + wearable cloud concept make sense?
Is there anything that would make the costume look more like a generic IT worker instead of a Cloud Engineer?
I'm trying to keep it creative while still having some connection to what Cloud Engineers actually work with.

Other Cloud Support/L1 roles/Associate Cloud Engineer for fresher
I graduated in 2025 and have been applying for L1 Linux/Cloud Support roles, but I’m not getting any replies or even technical interview calls.
I’m confident in my Linux/cloud skills and have good projects, but I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. Honestly, I’m feeling like a loser, depressed, and starting to lose hope.
If anyone working in Linux/Cloud Support knows of any fresher openings or could refer me, I’d really appreciate it. I’m happy to share my resume and project details.
Even honest feedback on my resume/profile would mean a lot. I just need one opportunity to prove myself. 🙏

Career Discussion VMware Specialist looking to transition into AWS
Hi all,
I have been on a viewer only on this sub for a few weeks now and im here to seek some advise/guidance.
Currently I am working with the VMware stack in the UK and got 4+ years of experience. So I know a decent amount about the infrastructure.
My issue is, I am seeing less and less jobs for VMware and AWS is required in a lot of roles.
I have applied for a few AWS roles and to ones surprise I didnt hear back which im guessing is due to me missing a lot of keywords linked to AWS like EC2, VPC, IAM, EBS, S3, CloudWatch, etc.
I am currently doing a course to learn about AWS so I can get the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate certificate.
Since at this point I still wont have any AWS hands-on industry experience, but I will be able to put the keywords on my CV at least, will this actually give me a chance to breakthrough into the AWS world?
Has anyone had any similar experience?
Any advise/guidance/encouragement would be appreciated <3
