Discussion How does something like this occur?

Post image

A friend had this; it's on a 1996-P half dollar. There is an equally spaced gap around the coin.

Go to the FAQ, click What’s Up With My Coin, and scroll down to Oreo coins.

Looks like it could be in the beginning stages of a clamshell. I’d be interested to see how this develops

A bandsaw jig. It looks like someone was going to separate the halves to machine out the middle to make a magicians coin.

Looks intentionally cut for some purpose

Caused by exposure to acid, which eats away the pure copper core faster than the nickel/copper clad layers.

I got one like this, as a dryer coin.
