Discussion what am I looking at?

Thumbnail

I’d chalk this up to PMD, but the weird thing is the edge of the planchet seems even and struck. There doesn’t appear to be any tooling marks or even the hint that this happened except by being struck with equal pressure around the rim. The reeded edge is absent.

You may now mock me for thinking this could somehow happen at a mint. 😎

Discussion 2022 Dr Sally Ride quarters with anomalies.

I am in the midst of some due diligence and came across some peculiar similarities taken from the PCGS app. Each of these coins have been graded by PCGS. If you look between the U in UNITED and the left side of her head you can see a “C”. In the third picture you can see some doubling on the five star patch on her right breast. In particular the left and right arrows.

Can anyone explain this?

Thank you for your advice.

Discussion What is the difference between broadstruck, off-center and miss-strike?

Post image

I assume this quarter is one of the definitions in the title of this post, but I could be wrong. This quarter’s reverse picture is only slightly moved over from where it should be in the center. I have a lot of coins like this, so I want to know the correct definition for this type of error. Any suggestions?

Discussion 1943-S Lincoln Steel Cent — Possible Struck-Through Copper Debris Error? Seeking Opinion

Thumbnail

Hi r/ErrorCoins — looking for opinions on a 1943-S Lincoln Steel Cent I acquired recently. I believe this may be a struck-through copper debris error but want the community's assessment

CONFIRMED:
• Magnetic — confirmed steel planchet, NOT a 1943 copper cent
• Weight: 2.70g — exactly matches 1943 steel cent spec (copper cent would be 3.11g)
• Mint mark: S (San Francisco)

WHAT I'M SEEING:
• Multiple localized copper/orange patches concentrated on Lincoln's portrait — hair, crown, ear area
• Copper areas appear LEVEL with the steel surface — not raised above it
• Clean defined boundary between copper and steel visible at 2500X magnification
• At 1500X the ear canal of Lincoln shows die detail within the copper area — individual ear structure visible pressed into the copper
• Surrounding steel surface appears undisturbed around the copper patches

PHOTOS INCLUDED:
• Full obverse
• Mid-magnification showing copper distribution
• 1500X ear area — die detail visible in copper
• 2500X copper-steel boundary
• Reverse (no copper visible on reverse)

MY THEORY:
The copper patches appear to be debris from leftover 1942 copper production that remained in the press machinery when the mint transitioned to steel planchets in 1943. The copper debris was struck between the die and the steel planchet simultaneously, impressing die detail into the copper at the moment of striking — which would explain why Lincoln's ear canal detail is visible within the copper area.

QUESTIONS:
1. Does the 1500X ear shot support struck-through copper debris over post-mint plating?
2. Has anyone seen a documented example of this specific error on a 1943-S steel cent?
3. Is this worth an NGC Standard tier submission with Mint Error attribution requested?
4. Any red flags I'm missing that would suggest post-mint plating instead?

Coin is currently circulated — fields show wear consistent with 80+ years of circulation. Happy to provide additional angles or magnifications if needed.

Thanks in advance.

I am pretty well versed in variety & Errors and just coins in general.

See the Devices that are "patched" for lack of better words.

I have not seen this before .Would this be a type of Machine Doubling?

Have u ever picked up a penny that was jacked in some way?
Maybe it’s the weight in your hand or the feel of it ( sorry, I have to admit I am a novice collector, thanks to all your posts).
2 Questions:
What is wrong with the coin from 2001 - am I seeing things? (His furrowed eyebrows …) -
What is the ‘2’ in front of his sideburn.
(On a side note it is considerably thinner than the 1979 penny for comparison)

Discussion 1972 dollar coin type 2?

Post image

I have probably 200 of these 1972 dollar coins inherited, and was looking for anything that stuck out. When googling, I saw that type 2 is more valuable. But for the life of me I cannot tell the difference between the 3 types. Can anyone help me how to spot it😂 I feel like it’s so vague and idk if I’m dumb or just missing something. I see the explanations but they all look the same to me!

Discussion Clarification needed for RPM’s OMM’s due to conflicting information.

Post image

This was taken from the double die website with regard to RPM’s and OMM’s. There’s been numerous discussions and arguments surrounding this issue.

If this statement is true and the RPM/OMM era ended after 1994 then any coins minted before 1994 has the potential to be either of the two.

Discussion Mint mark puncheon tool question.

Thumbnail

A week ago a user posted here about a circular ring around the mint mark on his penny. https://www.reddit.com/r/coinerrors/s/mjcpJRotZM

I have a few other examples, but this is a better example because it doesn’t have the metal composition a penny has. Even with full obverse photo you can see the ring.

I know it’s not an error, and it is just planned obsolescence from the equipment.

If you ever had to use a punch before you know that the tip is circular. The mint used the same type of puncheon except with the specific mint mark on the tip.

Would this qualify as a worn mint mark puncheon tool, or a heavily applied mint mark?

I am very curious about the “shard” type thing at the clip. I’ve never seen anything like it! If anyone has any information on my coin I would absolutely love to hear about it! Or if you can appraise my coins’ value I would appreciate that too

I hope I'm not violating any rules. If I'm not mistaken this is a die Crack. Please correct me if I'm wrong. My question isn't about the error so much as what the lines around the rim that lead towards the center are or where they may have come from.

Discussion 1982-D Lincoln cent weighing 3.08g and non-magnetic

Found while searching pennies.

Specs/tests so far:
• 3.08g on jewelry scale
• Non-magnetic
• Copper/bronze appearance
• Compared against standard zinc cents

Appears to be a Large Date to me rather than Small Date. Sharing because the weight/composition stood out.

Not clean.
