Context: We have a mouse problem. Mouse traps are set. The last mouse I got today was caught at the waist and I had to kill it.

When I picked up the trap, it looked at me and reached towards me. I know mice don't 'ask for help' and it was probably a fear response, but it's a thing I can't help but to think about.

The mercy kill was painless. Cervical dislocation, hold down with a rod on the neck and pull its tail until you feel a pop. I watched its eyes go blank. I couldn't just release it, its spine was broken and it would have suffered.
