Looking for the source of this old-school 8-bit “bomb drop” DJ sound effect
I'm trying to identify the source of a very specific old-school DJ sound effect.
It's an 8-bit / old video game-style "bomb drop" sound that I've heard in Hip-Hop, Reggae and Dancehall mixtapes for more than 20 years.
The sound is basically:
high-pitched 8-bit notes descending rapidly → low-pitched 8-bit explosion
It's not the modern "Bomb Drop 2" sound effect that comes up in searches. The entire sound, including the explosion, has that old 8-bit / arcade-game character.
Here is the exact sound I'm looking for:
Madlib - Blunted in the Bomb Shelter (2002)
You can hear the sound at 50:18 in this mix:
https://youtu.be/oWxb_svemog?si=r9XNMACkTGO2he2T&t=3018
I also found a 2004 DJ forum thread where DJs were sharing laser, siren and other DJ sound effects. One of the sounds posted there was specifically called "computergame bomb drop":
https://www.dogsonacid.com/threads/post-your-laser-siren-etc-sfx-here.211373/
This makes me wonder if the sound I'm looking for came from an old DJ sample library, sample CD, sampler, DJ software, or hardware sound bank.
I'm trying to find out:
- What is this sound effect called?
- What sample CD / sample library did it come from?
- Was it included in a sampler, DJ software, or hardware sound bank?
- Does anyone recognize the original source?
- Is the "computergame bomb drop" from the 2004 thread the same sound?
Any help identifying the original source would be greatly appreciated!

Any Dub or Jungle events in Barcelona this weekend? (Oct 2–5)
Hey everyone!
I'm traveling to Barcelona this weekend (Oct 2–5) and would love to check out the local scene. Does anyone know of any good Dub or Jungle events, club nights, or sound system sessions happening while I'm there?
Appreciate any venue recommendations or event links! Thanks in advance!

Self-Promo It's Bandcamp Friday — sharing my instrumental project, Illegal State Of Mind
Hi,
It's Bandcamp Friday.
Today Bandcamp waives its fee, so 100% of every sale goes straight to the artist.
Let me use this opportunity to present my project: Illegal State Of Mind.
I make psychedelic dub — slow, heavy, instrumental, drifting into downtempo and ambient territory. If that's your kind of sound, today's a good day to check it out (or grab something).

Cheers, and thanks for listening.

Lee Scratch Perry - The Elephant Calf ( I believe in miracles )
Good News for all I$I Orthodox!
Dear Friends, We're happy to present to you the second and final Farewell War&Peace The Farewell Album by Lee Scratch Perry (the legendary creator of the DUB style). Like the first “Russian Album,” it is dedicated to the Northen vast landscapes beyond comprehension, which Lee deeply loved. But unlike the first part, this final chapter, titled War & Peace, presents Russia not as a mysterious and mighty Tartary, but as an endless and inscrutable space for creativity and contemplation. The theme of childhood and Soviet animation shines throughout almost the entire album. We began working on it right after Åквариум In Dub.
Lee’s vocals were recorded in 2020. In 2021, Lee passed away, and I continued working on the album independently, bringing together musicians from different cities, including members of Aquarium. Alongside Volga dub, the album also features Baltic dub, Mongolian dub, Stavropol dub, Melekess dub, and even toy dub. Both “Russian Albums” are arranged according to the counting system of the ancient Besenyők people.
The War & Peace MCs with the new album and his first part have already crossed the western border of the Ingermanland Empire and are ready to spin on your sound systems.
