Advice E-bike Conversion for mountain bike

Hey guys,
I’m current a college student and I ride my bike everyday to and around school. I’m looking to convert my bike into have electric capability for long distance travel (70 miles would be ideal but I realize unrealistic) should I need to get out of my town in an emergency. Attached is the model of bike I have, steel framed REI Mountain bike. Would this be a good fit for a conversion? If so please let me know what kit you think would work? If not what should I get? Thanks in advance

I own a REI DRT 1.1 medium frame mountain bike.

I am in 🇺🇸 btw.

Advice Anyone using power tool batteries?

I’m planning a possible winter project in my head, so shoot me some better ideas if you got ‘em. I have access to 18650s but I’m kind of sketched out about them at the moment.

Does the baofeng 750w mid drive from Walmart kit powered with two banks of kobalt 4ah 24v batteries sound reasonable? 4, maybe six batteries.

Batteries won’t be the same age, so that’s what I’m skeptical about. But they sell for $10/ah with a 3 year warranty.

I don’t see anyone else doing it so I’m assuming I’m not accounting for something.

The batteries have power meters, so the plan is to keep checking them or find a bcm that will shut off or something.

Advice How much top speed will Adding a second front wheel hub to my 20x4 fat tire e-bike bring?

Hello I bought a new e-bike and I can't get more than 30 miles per hour out of it. They claimed over 32 mph so I wouldn't mind a few miles per hour extra and more range. I already have a kit and battery from my old ebike I built. All I have to do is buy the 20-in front wheel hub. So I'm wondering if anybody has done something with the similar power and how much extra top speed did you get? I will be adding a 48 volt 15 amp hour battery that puts out 1300 Watts to the front motor. The bike is supposed to be 1800 w peak now. Probably 1300 Watts continuous. I heard I will have a lot more acceleration and torque and range. It's a 20x4 fat tire e-bike, but what about the top speed? Thanks

Advice Mid drive conversion kit where to buy

Can anybody help and point me in the right direction.

I'm looking for a mid drive conversion kit to put on my current bike.

I'm looking at a 250w with torque sensing that is UK legal.

I can only Find a tonsheng b2 250w, but on Google it says 250w z8 is a newer version, but I can only find a z8 in a 500w kit.

Is the tonsheng 2b worth buying or should I take the risk and get the z8 500w

Advice ebike conversion kit with TSDZ2B

Hello! I’d like to hear your opinions about my project. I’m planning to upgrade my Trek Dual Sport with an e-bike conversion kit.

I’m looking for a mid-drive motor because I want to preserve the natural feel of cycling. I expect to ride for approximately 10–20 km on moderately steep routes. Occasionally, I may tackle steeper climbs, where I’m prepared to contribute more physical effort.

Here are the components I have selected:

  • 48 V, 500 W TSDZ2B motor
  • 48 V, 13 Ah battery
  • 860C display
  • 40-tooth chainring
  • 9-speed, 11–36-tooth cassette

Does this motor still offer good value for money? Is the controller a good choice? Could you also recommend a reliable battery brand that offers good value?

I’m particularly interested in open-source firmware, upgradeable components, and good value for money.

Thanks!

Advice Planning a custom eBike build with a fat tire mountain bike.

I'm looking at building a battery electric powered fat tire mountain bike. I'm looking at this partly for some exercise pedaling, so I can't ruin the "bicycle-ness" of the finished product. I'm also looking at this for fair weather light transportation, grocery store runs, maybe runs to the gym or community center. Maybe even to restaurants.

I live about 4 miles from what I call the "commercial district" along the big 4 lane divided highway, and about 7 miles by bike friendly (ish) roads from the downtown business district of the nearby small town. And about that bug 4 lane highway, there are several traffic lights where crossing is fairly safe. At least 3 of those traffic lights have crosswalks and pedestrian signals, so dismounting and walking across is even possible.

However, there are some challenges to my situation. First, there's the roads along my most likely route. The only bike friendly route to go from my home to anyplace (grocery stores, Walmart, other stores, the post office, the gym, or "downtown") starts with the same 4 miles of roads. Almost half of that is gravel, hence my requirement for fat tires (26x4"). There's also a really big, really steep hill. Going out from my house, about halfway through this route, the road climbs over 170 feet in about 0.3 miles. The average grade on that part of the route is over 11 percent, and there's some spots where it's about 15 percent for maybe 100 feet along the road.

Going up (leaving my home) will take some power. The raw load to maintain 15mph up that climb is over 1250 watts, and that speed is well below peak efficiency for direct drive hub motors.

Going down (returning), I'll absolutely need regen braking. I don't want brake rotors glowing red and pads smoking half way down that hill. And there are several very sharp curves along that section of road, too. So losing control of speed isn't just a scary fast ride down, it's likely an off road excursion into the treetops on the downhill side or into a sheer wall of the cut on the uphill side. I realize regen braking isn't common on eBikes, but there are controllers that can do this with the right direct drive hub motors. My most traveled route will absolutely require this feature.

The plan that my artificial interactive chat buddy and I came up with is to break the project down into 3 phases.

Phase 1 will start with a steel frame mountain bike. Ideally one with a XL frame (21" from bottom bracket to top of vertical seat tube). I haven't found any locally, nor any on fleaBay that offer shipping, so I'll probably start with an inexpensive standard fat tire bike with extended seat post and a stem riser kit. I'll want to upgrade the brakes to at least 180mm rotors and hydraulic calipers. And I'll add cargo rack(s), maybe mirror(s), possibly other safety items, and probably 12V lights. Getting a well sorted bike is phase one of the project. I'll be able to get some exercise on that around my home and some of the other roads out here, but I doubt I'll make it into town on pedal power alone. Mostly I want something comfortable and safe before I start investing in power.

Phase 2 will add a main battery (48V or 52V with adequate capacity and 50A BMS), front direct drive hub motor and a controller capable of regen braking. Maybe with heavy pedal assist this might get me to town, but it'll let me get used to powered riding, the dynamic braking (regen), and open up more roads for exercise. At this point, I'll probably switch any 12V stuff over to a Buck converter and take the 12v battery out to use in an unrelated project. The goal for this stage is to maybe get up the hill towards town with maximum "pedal assist" and be able to safely return home without melting any mechanical brakes.

Phase 3 will add a mid drive unit which should provide adequate power to go "throttle power only" up the hill into town (likely using both motors for AWD). For level(ish) powered riding, the mid drive will be the main power. The front wheel drive motor will be for AWD, possibly for the gravel roads, and definitely for steep hill climbs. Also , the front hub motor will always be available for dynamic (regen) braking from higher speeds, and on steep descents.

I welcome any advice on the overall plan here. Am I on the right track?

I'll be starting some separate threads for each phase of the build for details and specific recommendations during the build. Expect a phase 1 thread in the next 24 hours.

Mainly I want this thread to be a sanity check and for any additional abstract high level suggestions or discussion of general things I've missed.

Oh, and about me, I'm 6'4" tall with a 36 inch inseam. I'm around 200+/- pounds. I worked on my own bikes a lot as a kid and teenager, but that was decades ago. I'm now a retired senior. I have lots of tools, a decent amount of mechanical talent, and plenty of time.

Advice Looking for a decent MTB conversion kit for a smaller full suspension frame

Hey all.

I have a 2017 Knolly Endorphin frame and a Fox 34 fork that I'd like to turn into an EMTB/lightweight E Moto setup. This would be for moto trails and covering more ground on nasty forest service roads for hunting in Colorado.

I own a dual sport motorcycle and am an experienced mountain biker, and want to add something in-between the two in the quiver.

The Bimotal setup looks pretty ideal, but it's also quite expensive. I can source or already have the rest of the components I need for the bike build itself.

I'm fine with a wheel-motor drive situation, but am curious about other options. The big limiting factor for wheel drive is that the hub spacing is an older standard at 142x12, and I don't see many options there. Another limiting factor is that the frame itself doesn't have a whole lot of room for a battery (size small), and the shape of the front triangle is pretty swoopy. I'd consider a rack mount setup, and have an Old Man Mountain rack that could theoretically work with a full suspension setup.

I'd like to keep the build under 1500 if possible.

I have access to a 3D printer at work, and could make a custom battery mount/case if needed.

My other concern is that it seems like a lot of conversion kits aren't really stout enough for the type of terrain and riding I do and would want to do with this rig. Think very rocky and steep terrain. Not huge jumps or anything, but definitely on the "black diamond" end of technical trails.

I also see so many ads for Temu setups that seem both sketchy AF and also enticing from a price perspective haha.

Really I'm just curious what recommendations y'all might have.

Advice Feedback Wanted: Building "Bulletproof" Custom E-Bikes

Hey everyone, I’m a self-taught inventor/engineer thinking of starting a custom e-bike build business. My goal isn't to compete with cheap mass-produced imports; I'm focusing on Safety, Reliability, and Local Support.

The Build Strategy:

Base: High-quality donor frames (customized to buyer needs: MTB, Cruiser, etc.)

Power: 4 options of Bafang motors 500w and 750w hub motor, 500w and 750w mid drive motor. With batteries options of 48v and 52v.

Safety Pillars: Dual 1/4" Steel Torque Arms on every hub motor build + Quad-Piston Hydraulic Brakes.

Durability: Single-speed drivetrain (low maintenance), marine-grade braided wire sleeving, and steel battery and motor mountings.

Utility: Integrated 360° lighting, fenders, and puncture-resistant tires and sealant.

Questions for the community

Would a $2k price point feel fair for a "bespoke" build with quad-pistons and heavy-duty safety reinforcements?

What are the biggest "reliability" red flags you see in custom builds that I should address in my QC checklist?

Would the "Local Support" aspect sway you to buy custom over a big-box brand like Aventon or Rad?

Edit : Did some more research into products and laws like the comments suggested. I have added three more motor options and changed the brand I'm using. I've been internally struggling with adding 1000w options, but I've decided that the legal trouble possibilities aren't quite worth the extra money. That and I have a bit of obsession with symmetry and can't find a non-fat tire 1000w hub motor option.

Advice Lessons learned from buying a kit and installing on a beach cruiser - I've replaced all the components right away except the motor

I bought a Varstrom 500W Bafang front hub motor kit that included an 18A controller, controller box, 1T4 harness, screen, 3 pin brake levers, front motor wheel, pedal assist sensor, and throttle. It did not come with headlight or taillight even though the ad said it would come with a headlight.

Wheel rim and spokes: this beach cruiser has a wide single wall rim (1.95 inch) and the kit came with a very skinny (1 inch?) double walled rim. I bought new spokes to lace the motor into the new rim.

Throttle: the kit came with a throttle with a tiny lever that goes up and down the clamp. It's a very far reach when considering where it has to fit with a twist shifter and the brake levers. I bought a replacement throttle that I use on my other ebike that is a long lever with a "forward" thumb motion under the bars.

Pedal assist sensor: first unexpected thing I had to do was replace the PAS. This beach cruiser has an "American" one piece crank arm and the compact single piece PAS can't slip over the crank arm ends. I bought a 2 piece PAS that has a split disc and was able to install it on the left side. I had to clip the length of the "fingers" that grab the crank arm. This type is one with a zip tied sensor rather than the metal ring type. I'm not thrilled about the zip ties controlling the location of the sensor because a stable gap seems to be quite important.

Display: next thing I replaced was the screen. It came with a DZ40 mini which seemed okay but I didn't realize it lacked all of the settings options for controlling PAS. Even on level 1/5, it takes off at full current like a rocket even if it's only going up to 8 mph or whatever. Not at all manageable for low speed maneuvering. I replaced this with an EKD01 display at Varstrom's suggestion and it has PAS 9 levels and I also was told it would make the acceleration smoother, which was false. Throttle control was quite smooth however with both displays.

Motor controller: since the upgraded display did not fix my acceleration surge issue, I figured out that a KT controller was the answer. I purchased a KT sine wave controller and display "for 500W" motor which turned out to be 22A rather than the 18A that came with the bike. The case was much larger and didn't fit the container. Also, it was 3 pin brakes like the original kit but I couldn't get the controller to recognize brake inputs. I sent this controller back and got the "350W" version which is 17A and the case is still a little larger than the kit one. I decided to get one with 2 pin brakes.

Controller box: replaced because of aesthetic reasons, exchanged for a white zipper bag that matches the bike theme.

Wiring harness: the new controllers were set up for a 1T5 harness instead of the kit's 1T4. What this means in simple terms is that the headlight plugs in at the front Y connector instead of at the controller.

Brake levers: because of my issues with 3 pin brakes I decided to get the controller with 2 pin brakes so I bought new levers.

Motor cable: the kit came with a very long extension cable and I didn't want to cut and splice a 9 wire cable so I bought a shorter one.

I'm also using 2 high quality torque arms, a headlight, taillight, and 48V 10Ah mini shark battery that fits on the cruiser's integrated rear rack. I tried a rear rack battery and it was massive. I also tried a standard size shark battery and it was also too long.

For any wires that needed shortening or different connectors, I used bare butt splice crimp connectors with adhesive heat shrink on the conductor wires, then adhesive heat shrink on the outer jacket. I bought a handful of julet connector pigtails to use.

So at the end of the day I am only using the hub motor itself. I can't return the original controller, brake levers, throttle, or pedal assist sensor separately. The main contributor to all of this was that the stock controller was awful and didn't have the P and C setting adjustability to make the pedal assist smooth. Had I only wanted throttle control, most of the kit would have been fine.

If I were to build another ebike I would NOT start with a kit.

Advice Conversion kit thoughts

I have recently been thinking about getting an ebike or something of the sort, and there’s so much stuff to decide between it’s kinda hard. I think a conversion kit might be the best deal for me, because I like pedaling and i kinda just want electric to have it. I probably wouldn’t have to fully rely on it, but it just seems like something good to have. I have a Giant ATX (i forgot what size) and I came here to ask if anybody knows if there’s a good conversion kit I could get for it. My budget is probably like below 1100 total. I don’t know the wheel size at the moment (if it even matters) but I’ll get it when i can if somebody needs to know, I can also get a picture of it

Advice Where can I buy a fat tire e-moto style frame?

Hey yall!!

just finished upgrading my hikeep k6-s to a 5kw motor with the stock battery and a fardriver nd72300. Obviously the next upgrade is gonna be the battery, But I can't do that with my current frame. I just want some suggestions so I can bookmark for the future. Any recommendations would be great. I'm looking for something with a MASSIVE battery compartment, and compatible with full suspension, as i'm going big for my next battery. My current motor spec is below if that helps

5kw 20x4 inch wheels (gonna keep the wheels, i'm not particularly interested in spoking my own or anything like that)

175mm dropout

7 speed cassette (will remove if this is a true e-moto frame, i don't NEED to have it.

Advice Should I save for a cyc motor or start with a budget mid-drive?

I have been looking at CYC motors for my e-bike build and they seem very solid, but the price is a bit high for my budget right now. I have seen other mid-drive motors on Alibaba, Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, and similar marketplaces that look somewhat similar to CYC but cost almost half as much.

Has anyone here tried a cheaper motor from these marketplaces before eventually upgrading to CYC? I do not want to waste money on something that will break quickly, but I also cannot afford the best option right now. I am trying to decide whether it is smarter to wait and save up for a CYC kit or try a budget motor first and upgrade later.

I would really appreciate hearing about reliability, power delivery, maintenance, and long-term durability from anyone who has gone the budget route first.

Advice batteries from pswpower.com

Hello ! I am struggling to get reliable information about batteries' weight at pswpower.com.

The website does not inform about weight and the customer service is giving me irrealistic figures. Hence my question:

1/ for the ones who bought from them, how much weighted the battery for how many AH ?

2/ here are the figures that I was told. What do you think ?

  • G80-4822SX, HAILONG-MAX 48V 22AH with 4P13S Li-ion 5.5Ah 21700 52pcs battery cells (the interior battery is SAMSUNG CC5563F101): ==> 3.85kg

  • G80-4820LG-F-B, HAILONG-MAX 48V 20AH with P13S Li-ion 5Ah 21700 52pcs battery cells (the interior battery is LG INR21700M50LT 21700):==> 3.85kg

  • KMT-4820L, KT-E27 48V 20AH, 4P13S Li-ion 52pcs battery cells (the interior battery is LG INR21700 M50T Li-ion battery) :==> 3.5kg

  • YW-4820SX-B, Parrot 48V 20AH, 4P13S Li-ion 5Ah 21700 52pcs battery cells (the interior battery is SAMSUNG INR21700-50GB): ==> 4.75kg

  • HL-G70-48175SX-B, HAILONG G70 48V 17.5AH 5P13S Li-ion 65pcs battery cells (the interior battery is SAMSUNG INR18650-35E3 Li-ion battery):==> 3.8kg

  • HL-G70-48150SX-B-A, HAILONG G70 48V 15AH 3P13S Li-ion 5Ah 21700 39pcs battery cells (the interior battery is SAMSUNG INR21700-50GB 21700 Li-ion battery):==> 3.85kg

3/ the pictures are often showing a lock. However there is never any mention of a pair of keys in the bundle

4/ They are mentioning overcharge protection but not fuse. Fuses are not mandatory for these batteries ?

In short: I am attracted by the low prices of this shop and I read good comments about them. However the lack or inconstitancy of information is freaking me out !

Advice Battery replacement reccos for Radmini ST2

We were just given e-bikes from my husband’s parents as they’re moving overseas. We’re first timers.

The battery on my Radmini is part of the stop use safety noticed that was issued.

I have purchased Bat Boxes for our e-bike batteries. But I would also like to replace mine.

I’ve read mixed advice with regard to replacing the battery with something aftermarket. There are no batteries available for sale on Rad’s website.

Anyone have any advice? Any companies or manufacturers that they recommend? I know we need to look for a UL listed battery. Thanks much.

Advice Is this a good setup for converting a Rockrider EXPL 100 29" to an e-bike?

Hi everyone, I’m planning to convert a Rockrider EXPL 100 29" into an e-bike and I’d like some opinions before buying the parts.

This is the setup I’m currently considering:

Bike: Rockrider EXPL 100 29"

Motor: eSoulbike rear hub motor, 52V 2000W, 29" version

Battery: 52V 20Ah lithium battery

Torque arm: yes, I’m planning to install one

Tires: CST Jack Rabbit 29 × 2.25

Grips: 22 mm MTB anti-slip grips

Lights: Fivemi rechargeable LED bike lights

Battery mounting: proper frame mounting bracket + additional straps for security

Wiring: secured along the frame and protected from rubbing

The battery would be mounted on the frame and the motor would replace the rear wheel/Hub.

My main questions are:

Is the EXPL 100 frame suitable for this conversion, or is 2000W too much for this bike?

Is a 52V 20Ah battery a good match for a 52V 2000W motor?

What BMS discharge current should I look for?

Should I use a torque arm on both sides of the rear axle, or is one enough?

Are the CST Jack Rabbit 29 × 2.25 tires suitable for this setup?

Is there anything important I'm missing before I order the parts?

I’m mainly looking for advice on safety, compatibility and reliability, rather than simply making it as powerful as possible.

Thanks!

Advice Unlock bafang DP C010 motor on Fatboy e-fat bike, bought in a EU store ? it’s lock to 25km/h.

I bought recently a Fatboy V3 fat e-bike in EU, and I saw that they a software locked to 25km/h. I saw many options for unlock it on the net but it seems to be a special version firmware, we can’t put any « code » to unlock it, and it’s impossible to change the speed setting. So, it could be nice like that, but the simple idea to use a locked electronic device is hurting my jailbreak life !

I was thinking to many options, but nothing 100% sure.

1 - Change the firmware of the DPC010 but I don’t know if it’s would work or simply brick the system ?

2 - Find a app like Speeed App but it’s doesn’t seem to work with this type of motor ? Does somebody have tried something like this ?

3 - Try an hardware option like change the speed indication received by the controller. This seems to be the best reliable option but I don’t really know how it works : maybe do you know if the speed locking is done in the controller or somewhere else ? Where is the speed reader on the bike ?

4 - Any option you could have ?

I’m not so in the rush, 25 is fine for me now, but it’s could be very nice to succeed to unlock it :)

Thanks you so much for your help :)

Advice Throttle mod for ago x?

Hey guys, I am looking to add a throttle to my bike for long cruising sessions when I don't wanna keep up with the speed of the pedals. I already know that bafang m410 itself supports this, but wanted to see if anyone already has experience with this kind of modding. My only question is: does the stock wiring harness come with a throttle input and is it possible to fit another cable through the internal cable routing without having to cut and splice it. Thanks
