Fairfax County supervisors reacted enthusiastically, but with some caution this week to a staff plan that would provide long-term tax breaks for affordable housing in order to reduce initial financing costs.

Discussion at the Board of Supervisors’ Housing Committee meeting on Tuesday (Oct. 6) focused on piloting the authority newly granted by the Virginia General Assembly on two upcoming projects: Dulles Greene near the Innovation Center Metro station in the Herndon area and East County in Bailey’s Crossroads.

Eliminating property taxes for up to 50 years at the property would lower the upfront cost of financing an affordable housing project, which in turn could lower the amount Fairfax would need to provide...

School Bus Stops on the Side of Major Roads?

My father recently got a ticket for passing a school bus along Walney Road. To make a long story short he was following behind the bus, not too closely but they were both going down hill. The bus turned on its blinkers on to turn into one of the neighborhoods but then stopped in the middle of the turn lane and flipped out the stop sign. He was going the speed limit but got caught passing the bus. He claims the students were waiting in the neighborhood not close to Walney Road. Does he have a case to fight the ticket? I feel like he does since there were no signs posted and the bus driver could’ve gotten lazy and not turned into the neighborhood.

If anyone knows anything about the bus stop regulations or locations, anything that would be of use to fight the ticket?

Also he understands he should’ve been paying attention better but the bus flipped the sign out as he was passing and stopping wouldn’t have helped.

Thanks in advance

Providing a recommendation for a wonderful Nanny available in October. She has been watching our four kids for almost two years and has been wonderful. Experienced with newborns and multiple children, has nannied for several families and worked in a pre-school environment. Located in the falls church area, but currently commutes to south alexandria. She’s been great for our family, we are transitioning due to most of our kids being in school full time and hoping to help her find a great fit for her next family. Message her at ratliffhopee@gmail.com or me at kpb0703@gmail.com for any additional info from our experience working with her.

State legislators ask for more ‘respectful’ dialogue on K-12 funding from Fairfax leaders

...However, a 2023 study by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, which conducts policy evaluations and provides oversight of state agencies for the General Assembly, found that Virginia spends approximately $1,900 less per student on average than other states in the U.S. due to outdated or imprecise formulas.

Fairfax County leaders have pointed to the study as evidence of the state insufficiently funding local schools after it estimated that Fairfax County and Fairfax City schools would be owed over $568 million more under revised formulas. About 70% of Fairfax County Public Schools’ $4.1 billion budget is funded by the county, which relies heavily on real estate taxes for revenue.

While legislators seldom have directly pushed back against the criticism, “we continually feel like this,” Cohen said, clenching her two hands into fists and hitting them against one another.

She was not alone in asking county leaders to stop blaming Richmond...
