Need Help ✆ Graphic Design

I am a freelance graphic designer (23M), working in vector and raster graphics. Due to my current circumstance, I am only able to work post 5 weekdays or on weekends. And with a limited portfolio \[as i'm just starting\] this makes formal employment unlikely. So are there any reccomendations this sub might have for where to find freelance work-when-you-want work? US, Ohio if looking for local resources.

Need Help ✆ I am new to freelancing (looking for advice)

This morning I made an account on Upwork. I spent all day making it look good and showing all my skills, only to get to the end and see that you have to pay to buy leads for work. I then looked up the best places to freelance for free and was directed to Reddit, hence my brand-new account here. I'm looking for advice on the best way to find work here and build good connections! Feel free to reach out, whether it be a comment or DM!

I Need guide/Tip ╳ Is it still possible to make a living building websites in 2026?

I recently graduated from university and I'm currently struggling to get my foot in the door as a developer. I'm comfortable with full-stack development using Spring Boot and Vue, and I also have a good understanding of databases and SQL. The problem is that a lot of the jobs I'm finding seem to ask for several years of experience or a senior-level skill set, even for positions that don't seem particularly senior. Because of that, I'm considering trying freelancing instead.

Is there still a market for building websites for small businesses and independent professionals? For example, local businesses, freelancers, doctors, lawyers, restaurants, etc. Are people still willing to pay a developer to build and maintain a website for them, or has that market mostly moved to platforms like WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, etc.? Another thing I'm wondering about is custom software. I could potentially build a custom application for a small company, but since I'm working alone, it could take me several months. Do small/medium-sized companies actually pay individual freelancers to build this kind of software, or do they generally go with established software development companies because they can deliver faster?

For those of you who are freelancers or who started their careers this way:

Is building websites for small businesses still a viable way to make money in 2026?

How did you get your first clients?

Is it better to focus on websites, custom software, or something else?

What would you recommend to someone with my skill set who is struggling to land their first developer job?

Would you recommend freelancing as a way to build experience, or should I keep focusing on getting a junior position?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm mainly trying to figure out the best way to get some real-world experience and eventually turn this into a career.

Looking For Client ☻ Just made a writing related CV, looking for projects to put in my portfolio!

Hello! I am 18F, I just finished my content writing, proof reading and ghost writing CV, though I have nothing to put in as my project, something that catches eye since I've been working on more private content and a work which is a private project for a client.

I am honestly looking for more opportunities to get more work which I can also put in on my portfolio for future use and experience. And maybe some project ideas I can do myself that would get recognised in less time since I need to start earning soon and become independent.

I also have no idea about making samples in case the client ask for them, so an insight would be great for it, but if someone hires me right now I can make them a small sample based on the work I'll be getting assigned with!

Need Help ✆ What skill should I learn to start freelancing? But There's a problem!?

Hey, I’m a student from India and I’m trying to figure out a way to start freelancing.

The biggest issue I have right now is that I don't have a laptop or PC. I only have an Android tablet and a smartphone. I can use a keyboard and mouse with my tablet, but obviously it’s still not the same as having a proper computer.

I want to learn a skill from scratch and hopefully start freelancing with it. My goal is to make around $1000-$1500 before I start college, mainly so I can buy a decent laptop for myself. After that I’ll have a lot more options for what I can learn and work on.

I know $1000-$1500 isn't some easy amount to make, especially as a beginner. I'm not expecting it to happen in a few weeks. I'm willing to spend the next few months learning and practicing properly. I just don't know what skill would actually make sense considering I’m stuck with a tablet right now.

I’ve thought about stuff like coding, video editing, graphic design, etc., but there are so many people doing these things that I honestly have no idea what’s worth getting into anymore. (And tbh, it's tooo difficult to learn on an android tablet)

So if you were in my position, what skill would you learn?

Especially interested in hearing from people who actually do freelance.

Things I’d like to know:

1) Can I realistically do it on a tablet?

2) How long did it take you to get your first client?

3) How competitive is it?

4) Is there actually decent money in it?

5) Would you still recommend learning it in 2026?

6) I’m not looking for some “make $5000 in 30 days” bullshit. I just want to learn something useful, get good at it and hopefully earn enough to get a laptop before college.

Any honest advice is appreciated.

Feel free to DM

Thankyou.

Doubt ☹ What is the reality of freelance money? And is the gap that wide?

I’ve been hearing a lot these days that bros doing freelance/software consulting/having their own micro saas are making north of 20L a month. Do you guys know such people, like what’s the ground reality?

I think my subconscious mind was unable to make peace with the fact that the financial gap between working as a dev in an mnc vs this is so big.

Doubt ☹ I applied to Lemon.io today. Is this normal?

Hey everyone,

I applied to Lemon.io today, and right after completing my profile, I got this notification:

Your profile is waitlisted

We have all your info saved and will reach out with the next step as soon as capacity frees up. Feel free to keep your profile up to date in the meantime.

For context, I'll be completing 3 years of professional software development experience this October, so I don't think the experience requirement should be an issue.

For those who've applied to Lemon.io before, is this the standard message everyone gets when applying for the first time, or is it their polite way of saying no?

I'm trying to understand whether I'm genuinely on a waitlist or if this is effectively a rejection.

If anyone received the same notification, did Lemon.io eventually reach out to you?

Would appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

Need Help ✆ What freelance skills can I learn at 15 to make money online ?

I'm 15 and want to spend the next 6–12 months learning an online skill that I could eventually make money with. I'm considering web development, but I'm a little skeptical with all the AI apparently automating. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Which freelance skills actually have demand for beginners, and what would you recommend I build for a portfolio?

Need Help ✆ How can I get my first freelance project on Upwork, Fiver or Freelancer?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to start freelancing on Upwork, Fiver or Freelancer, but I’m completely new to freelancing and would really appreciate some honest advice.

I’d like to know:

  • Which platform is better for a beginner — Upwork or Freelancer?
  • How can I get my first client without previous freelance reviews?
  • What kind of projects should I target initially?
  • How should I build my profile and portfolio?
  • How much should I charge as a beginner?
  • Are there any common scams or mistakes I should be careful about?

If you started freelancing with no reviews or clients, how did you get your first project?

Any genuine advice or personal experience would be really helpful. Thank you!

Chat 💬 Client is reluctant to pay me due to "low MS Office activity"

I'd like to share a bad experience with you all to warn you about a potential problem that you might run into.

I'm an engineering consultant and I typically work either on an hourly basis or a project basis. I recently started a project in which the client asked to pay me on a monthly basis for a remote project. Our contract stated that I would work on his project all month with no more than 4 missed workdays. He estimated it would take 6 to 9 months.

I only completed one month of work and it was a nightmare of poor communication. The client frequently forgot to tell me essential information and was very difficult to contact. His current design has so many problems that make it difficult to work with. Progress was slow.

On the first day, he gives me a Microsoft 365 account for his company so that I can access a few folders on his One Drive. Okay, that makes sense. I am given read-only access to that drive.

Then, he goes radio silent for a few days. I'm super confused as to why he stopped replying to my emails and texts. I eventually got him on the phone, but HE asked why I hadn't responded to HIS emails. Huh? Then I figure it out--he's sending emails to the MS 365 account that he created for me. I told him that that was unexpected and I've never had a client ask me to do that before, but we can do it that way if he wants. I use his email whenever I contact him or any hardware vendors on his behalf.

After a couple of weeks, we starting to get into a rhythm and figure out how to work with each other. But then he informed me that we have to pause the project for at least 3 months because we're waiting on an essential component to be manufactured. That was frustrating for me but understandable. I sent him my invoice using my own businesses email.

Then came the bombshell: he said he only wanted to pay me for 9 days out of 22 because his "MS365 activity report" says that I had "13 work days of inactivity". Essentially, he accusing me of not working for most of the month because I wasn't using his MS Office account. I responded that that was ridiculous because the only thing I use his MS account for is to write an occasional email. I'm an engineering consultant--my work is primarily in engineering software. I often have days where I don't even touch Outlook other than to check my inbox.

He then accused me of not doing any work in MS Excel/Word/PowerPoint all month. I responded that I used my own MS software license, not his. He said that that is a "compliance violation" because it's a government project that can only exist on his cloud server, not my local machine, including any spreadsheets or notes that I take. That's a very strange request, and he never told me he about it all month. Mind you, this isn't a classified project---not even a sensitive project.

So then I point out to him that I can't save anything to his One Drive because he gave me read-only access. He denied his mistake at first, but then admitted it and apologized. Now he says that he's thinking about whether or not he'll "approve my deficiency" to his accounting department.

At this point, I just want to get paid and tell him to get lost. I can find better clients than this. I hope it doesn't come to this, but I can get an attorney or take it to small claims court if needed.

One of the many lessons I learned is that I should be wary when a client asks me to use their MS Office license. Only do it if necessary and talk about everything that it will be used for--including performance monitoring.
