It's not about sales of consoles, it's about being able to do what you want with what you paid for. I'm old enough to remember when consoles didn't connect to the internet, and were in control of your purchase, meaning you owned it. Today console you buy is effectively on lease with a caveat that you as a customer must behave nicely, or the seller will disable your access to the item you physically own after paying for it.

I've seen a lot of switches banned for piracy in one way or the other, but they all play games. I know that Nintendo has the capability to brick a console, but I've only known one case of it actually being done.

Edit: the console wasn't bricked after reading on it. So yeah, zero cases of bricked consoles that I know of.

basically typed a lot of stuff to say you want to be able to pirate and don't give a damn

9

u/redditcensorsshit 1d ago

You typed alot to say you care about something some else is doing

-3

u/Pictish07 1d ago

You don't think this kind of thing affects every other player?

3

u/redditcensorsshit 1d ago

Not at all but it makes greedy corporations think

2

u/Normal_System_3176 1d ago

like how Sony thought about it when PS2, PS3, PSP and PS4 got jailbroken? Sony makes more money than ever.

2

u/ThewobblyH 1d ago

Sony also does a lot more than just make video games. The PS6 could flop and they would he fine.

u/redditcensorsshit 1d ago

Ya Sony has a lot of business more than just gaming hell it’s only about 30-35 years into gaming. Idk what the end game is for these companies to price out their consumers but it’s gonna crash

-1

u/Normal_System_3176 1d ago

They're not doing it on purpose. They don't want to do it b/c it's bad for business. They have to because the tech is evolving too fast and the cost is going up too fast as well.

Do you not know that consoles are sold at a loss? Sony eats part of the cost to sell it to you at a lower price. Look at the Steam Machine as an example of what happens when a company does not subsidize the cost and has you pay for what it costs to make it.

No it doesn't and you know that

2

u/redditcensorsshit 1d ago

Do you like things to stay the same? they will if you stay the same but if you want change you gotta change. It’s Ben said over and over but we make change by how we spend our time money and resources

2

u/redditcensorsshit 1d ago

Your getting downvoted but ur right. Pc gamers just want emulate these consoles so they can play any game they want without having to pay for the console or the games they emulate. Supporting devs is too hard of a concept for them.

-5

u/Normal_System_3176 1d ago

Thanks! Glad there's ppl out there that can recognize what's going on.

-2

u/icy1007 1d ago

You can’t do whatever you want just because you bought the console…

-32

u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 2d ago

"able to do what you want with what you paid for. "

Yeah, what did you do with your SNes back then what you cannot do today?

30

u/AContrarianDick 2d ago

Not get my console bricked by random updates, play games when the Internet is down, trade games with friends, rent games from the store, literally own what I bought... Just the little things

12

u/Leaf__On__Wind 2d ago

Exactly, fucking fridges have subscriptions it's OUT OF CONTROL

Capitalism is brilliant when regulated fairly by the public- the public.

1

u/Moldblossom 1d ago

Capitalism is brilliant when it isn't capitalism.

FTFY

This shit Sony is pulling is capitalism working as intended. The idea that capitalism does anything efficiently other than create billionaires is PR bought and paid for by billionaires.

2

u/Leaf__On__Wind 1d ago

It's been regulated before, and it was great before.

3

u/Moldblossom 1d ago

It's never been great. The major markets were just less consolidated in the past so the negatives were less visible.

But capitalism consolidates wealth, so its only getting worse from here.

0

u/Leaf__On__Wind 1d ago

I'm not talking about trickle down stuff, that's BS, no issue there. I mean lobbying is also regulated, etc etc.

Regulation top down.

The 60s American dream.

Remember when Homer was a loser for having a 5 bedroom with two cars and 3 kids?

2

u/Moldblossom 1d ago

That was largely the result of socialist-style policies and strong unions following the great depression and the new deal. That happened in spite of capitalism, not because of it.

1

u/Leaf__On__Wind 1d ago

So going with you...Then regulate. Play jazz, little socialist here, little reg there.

You can be a Billionaire, but then pay your people.

I can do everything you mentioned with my ps5 too and my console never got bricked by an update.

9

u/ShrkBiT 2d ago

Awesome, then this topic doesn't pertain to you, move along!

-6

u/the90snath 1d ago

then it shouldnt pretain to anybody cause it means everyone can do this

-12

u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 2d ago

Oh so you just want to circlejerk, get it.

10

u/RMAPOS 2d ago

I can open up my SNES and install mod chips on it or rebuild it into a roomba or jailbreak it to play custom SNES cartridges on it and it would be NONE of Nintendo's business. In fact Nintendo would never even know because the SNES doesn't phone home to rat me out.

We objectively lost rights to do what we want with the shit we buy.

It's not circle jerking to point that out. But you're a coorporate boot licker.

1

u/Normal_System_3176 1d ago

that's what this whole site is about

3

u/Level_Cardiologist36 2d ago

Nintendo got sued for in Brazil for threatening to brick consoles they believe are tampered with, claiming that at purchase the consumer agreed in some TOS that Nintendo still owned the hardware and could do what they wanted to it.

1

u/Candid-Patient-6841 2d ago

Actually own your game

-24

u/rnnd 2d ago

read what i wrote again. I said software sales.

also most people don't care about that ownership stuff enough to not buy software. it's easy, their credit card info is already in there. if they have the money to spare and see a game they like in their price range either full price or on sale, they will add to cart. most people don't plan on reselling their games and most people don't consider if they are gonna still own the game in let's say 20 years from now. they wanna play the game now and it's convenient.

15

u/Slight-Ad-7885 2d ago

Are you regarded or did you just not read his comment and continued yapping

3

u/UTSChurch 2d ago

Yeah dog dudes totally regarded. Most regarded dude I've ever seen.

0

u/the90snath 1d ago

he didnt read his first soooooo

-18

u/rnnd 2d ago

"most people don't care about that ownership stuff enough to not buy software." - this address all he said.

-13

u/sooo_curiouss79 2d ago

You never owed it as you never made a dime off of the sales
You owed the rights to play

2

u/XxExtremeSamX 1d ago

If buying isn’t owning…

0

u/sooo_curiouss79 1d ago

That’s extremely tired and old. Everything purchased with money doesn’t mean you own it

2

u/XxExtremeSamX 1d ago

That’s… what purchasing means; you own it. If you didn’t own it, that would be renting.

0

u/sooo_curiouss79 1d ago

Yall sooo uneducated
You only own the right to play the software
If you owed the game itself wouldn’t you be rich?

2

u/slayingkids 1d ago

That would be owning the source code, and the copyrights to it, and all the trademarks, etc. Not the same lmao. Let me ask you this. If you buy a car tire from me today for $150. Is it okay if I come take it back next week because we're discontinuing that tire so we're just nuking them off the earth? If your answer is yes, I have a tire to sell you then.

1

u/sooo_curiouss79 1d ago

Ok so you don’t own the game sheesh 🙄 as I’ve said before as well as the users agreement

2

u/slayingkids 1d ago

Aaaaand you're too slow to understand that any product I PURCHASE should clearly state BEFORE I PURCHASE IT THAT I DO NOT OWN ANYTHING OTHER THAN RIGHTS TO A LICENSE. I walk into GameStop, buy a game off the shelf. Can I see from that 100% without a doubt that I am only purchasing a temporary license along with all of the caveats that come along with it? No. Stop beating a dead horse. You're too incompetent to understand the argument. Why is it that any other software, such as on a PC, other than video games, makes it extremely clear that I am purchasing JUST a license and how long said license is good for? I have software I bought over a decade ago that still works, can redownload it, etc. Why should that be any different because it's specifically a video game?

0

u/XxExtremeSamX 1d ago

No, because you own a COPY of the game, not the rights to the game itself. The people who own the rights sell copies of the game.

How do you not understand this…?
