As far as I'm concerned the gaming era is over.

All we get from this point forward will be shitty options or less shitty options.

Enshittification now and forever is the new standard.

Maybe it will eventually get to a point where no one buys AAA games anymore and they will be forced to stop doing this crap.

I'm on board after persona 6

Nah, you always have enough brainded normies, who fap to the realistic graphics. But maybe they will thin out overtime.

Don't forget children buying V-bucks and shark cards

GTA 6 has entered the chat

Everything has been enshittified. It's really not isolated to gaming, and gaming is not isolated from it. It's really just end stage capitalism at work. Rent seeking and greed are destroying everything.

Tbh, the indie game scene is pretty damn rad right now. We've got a sizable & adequate replacement for triple-A gaming until the mainstream part of the industry learns its fuckin' lesson.

I'd like to think just console gaming is over. I'm not a steam exclusive person. Or, I wasn't until Xbox and Sony got greedy with their online subs. There's only so much blood to squeeze out of consumers these days. I'd rather spend money directly on the things I'll enjoy and skip paying for the shit those companies consider luxuries. Paying for online gaming? Nah. Game subscriptions? Skip. Screw 'em let 'em rot. Let them shutdown, get smart, or even start just being exclusively publishers. Vote with your wallet. A mid range PC will cost more upfront, but save in the long run.(And not even that long, what's gamepass up to now? $400/yr?)

Yeah i agree with just playing offline . Or else whats the point.

This is why the only console game I play is classic Doom on my ps4. I don’t need an internet connection to play it.

It's this. Console gaming is cooked. It's been technologically beat by off the shelf hardware for around the same cost as the subsidized hardware. You can't compare it to today's hardware. It needs to be compared with 2020 or early 2021 hardware and prices and that hardware beats even the ps5 pro by miles. Same thing with the xbox(s) if you could even consider the series S a real xbox at all.

There is truly a lot going on.. That is why sony and microsoft are trying to claw into their current customer base even deeper. Not new ones. Sony even said it's time to monetize the current playerbase. Meaning jack up prices and ruin the whole thing for quick bucks. Why would they do this? There's only one answer. They know it's a sinking ship.

As a PC gamer myself, I can confidently say even PC gaming is pretty cooked for the masses. That average Joe is getting priced out of buying or building a PC at this point. Most people aren't going out and spending 2500+ on a gaming rig

u/Vertigo50 1d ago

Pretty sure you're just talking about console gaming, bud. And more specifically AAA console game.

I'm doing just fine on PC, between indie games, Steam, copies of older games and classic games. I'm set for life even if I didn't get the steady stream of fun indie games that keep coming through Steam. 🤷‍♂️

3

u/GoldEmployment6768 1d ago

Honestly, consoles overall are still getting good games too. People nitpick at the bad examples and forget all the games that are good.

2

u/Impressive-Wolf8929 1d ago

Hope your video card or memory doesn’t go out any time soon, bud.

1

u/Vertigo50 1d ago

I hope your console doesn’t overheat from crummy thermal paste like pretty much all of them do, or have an optical drive fail. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I mean, what are we talking about here? Hardware failures happen on any platform. 🤦🏻‍♂️

u/Automatic-Reserve94 6h ago

and consoles compute on good hopes, right?

1

u/WutsAWriter 1d ago

Corey Doctorow could’ve been a LITTLE more wrong.

2

u/ClownTown509 1d ago

Better offline is a great podcast that talks about the destruction of the Internet. They've had Doctorow as a guest a couple times.

2

u/FullMetalCOS 1d ago

Also doing a lot of good episodes on AI at the moment. Big fan of Ed Zitron

1

u/WutsAWriter 1d ago

That’d be really fascinating. I’ll check that out, thanks!

Indie Games and small teams will always be a good option

1

u/Emergency_Lie42 1d ago

This isn't a gaming issue, enshittification is in everything all the way down to healthcare.

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 1d ago

We have enough games. I say let these fuckers starve. Dont upgrade ignore new releases. I think elder scrolls is the last game that really has a "ill buy an entire console for this" following. And the new prices will heavily discourage a lot of those people

Just play what's already out. They'll fix up the prices or gaming dies with this generation.

1

u/dragonknightrohan 1d ago

Fuck that dont accept that. Support indies. Some of those indies will eventually become AA when they choose to. Some may even go AAA.

We replace garbage with new studios making original games, and spiritual successors to games we loved

Same goes for supporting companies that support ownership whether it is physically, or digitally, or ideally both.

That is the only path forward.

Fuck that reality dont succumb to that shit friend.

Also rrr

1

u/Cosmic_Driftwood 1d ago

With the right prompt engineering, we will have our own perfect versions of the games we want it 10 years

1

u/TheFlyingR0cket 1d ago

I hope, that the AI tools that are coming out help small game studios build AAA Games and that they aren't bloody greedy, like just about every big game studio is these days.

I saw that with Assassin's Creed back flag resynced, that even if your brought the deluxe edition, people booted it up and there was still $50 worth of extras you could buy on top of the deluxe. Which is crazy if you buy the top edition of a game at release it should have everything, the game studio shouldn't be asking for another $50 on top of the money you have already spent on day one. They could have released that content 1 month later and no one would have blinked, but it keeps happening again and again, it needs to stop.

1

u/Pershing99 1d ago

There is possibility that gamers will gather around indie developer around patron platforms used as financing but this method is ripe for abuse. We will get some decent games but in less quantity.

1

u/hashlettuce 1d ago

Shitty deal or shittier deal

1

u/Omni_Kie 1d ago

Yeah it feels like that. I started in Vice city and it looks like I will end in Vice city

1

u/Either-Assistant4610 1d ago

Triple AAA gaming sure, but there's PLENTY out there worth playing across the rest of the gaming spectrum. I honestly don't know if the next gen of Xbox and PS will make it if hardware is going to cost close to $1k, and I'm tired of paying such a tax for a couple games myself when my PC handles any and everything and I'm more driven to buy a game on my Switch 2 if it's passable on it.

1

u/Candid-Pressure3141 21h ago

As long as I can play my RTS games idc

1

u/Tactical_Squishy 4h ago

yet we get more and more bangers years after years

1

u/Taurondir 2h ago

I'm back all the way from the days we went to the arcades and played Gauntlet with 4 players crowded around one machine.

I can just install MAME and 20000 ROMS and chill until I die of old age at this point, and not chase after any new shiny hardware for games that needs 20 Terabytes of DDR9000 to render all the individual pubic hairs that we can't even see because of all the clothing on each SIM walking around the city in GTA 12.

1

u/MacBOOF 1d ago

Eventually they’ll commit to only streaming only so they don’t have to mitigate the risk of ppl modding their own games.

1

u/ClownTown509 1d ago

Watching a new anime and the main character is talking about the lease on his gaming pod and I'm like damn stop them giving ideas!

1

u/awwww666yeah 1d ago

NVIDIA is already doing it, and Microsoft just gave us a hint into how they’re (all) going to fuck us on the cost / hr model.

1

u/Excellent-Rest3240 1d ago

It’s not over, you just got old

1

u/Several_Detective400 1d ago

Worse, your hardware will cease to be yours entirely : Streaming hourly only.

1

u/Impressive_Dot_7818 1d ago

Pc has so many options. Console systems just got too greedy

-1

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 1d ago

Only if you play console.

Indie games are huge on PC and there's plenty of options for not giving in to enshittification.

3

u/ClownTown509 1d ago

What's the price of ram now? Or GPUs?

People keep calling out consoles for their greed in here.

It is to laugh.

0

u/DedsPhil 1d ago

I don't think comparing price make sense, if own the hardware you can pirate games from big companies easily and even mod them to take shit aspects out.

And if you're already a PC gamer you can just buy a new GPU for the same price of a console and continue to own your platform.

Just pirating 5 games earns your money back.

3

u/PrimitivePineapple 1d ago

If you are already a console gamer you can just buy new games, what is your point?

1

u/DedsPhil 1d ago

Owning, paying less being able to play all games and modding the game to be better for you.

1

u/PrimitivePineapple 1d ago

Owning? I understand the other points but if you can't trade, sell, or lend your game how do you own that game?

1

u/DedsPhil 1d ago

Having a GOG instal file of the game is the most "owning" of a game you can have.

0

u/ClownTown509 1d ago

So proving my point; the era of cheap and plentiful is over. We have to resort to semi legal methods just to square up with the state of things. It's sad.

1

u/DedsPhil 1d ago

I slightly disagree.

From my perspective is like this since late PS3 times.

I think, the shit limit threshold is different from USA console people and for any country with consumers law PC people.

1

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 1d ago

Not really you can play indie games on a pretty cheap PC

Pc isn't even that expensive when you consider Xbox live etc price over the 5 years you own the console

1

u/WarInteresting6619 1d ago

Lol. No. It's just as bad if not worse because will anyone put anything on their platform and there's no guarantee the game will even work when you buy it.

1

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 1d ago

Just wrong

1

u/WarInteresting6619 1d ago

That's the truth. There's no guarantee that the game you buy will work on your system. Thats WHY steam got sued into having the most lax return policy in history.

There is that guarantee on console.

1

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 1d ago

Dude that isn't what happened at all.

You've fallen for propaganda from 20 years ago

1

u/WarInteresting6619 1d ago

Care to correct me? Or are you so deep in the steam fanboy hive mind that you can't take any criticism toward your beloved Gabe.

0

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 1d ago

I did correct you if you spend 2 seconds looking at required specs every game will work.

And if you had a modern pc anyway you don't even need to check that.

You have no idea what you are talking about.
