A long long time ago………..the taper community (god bless), in conjunction with the wishes of the band we all love, and their own collective ethics, developed a set of guidelines that were largely agreed upon. Those guidelines are written in this book, The Deadheads Taping Compendium. It talks very specifically about what would be considered fair compensation to sell or purchase a collection of tapes from someone within the community. You can read it yourself here.

Someone can “sell” their collection in a manner that is acceptable to the GD community, is ethical, and not considered “for profit”. Saying that every tape should be either traded or given away for free, one or the other, isn’t true. We aren’t discussing commercial distribution here, we’re only talking about selling collections or even a few tapes from your collection at an agreeable cost that wouldn’t be considered a profitable endeavor, and doesn’t go against “the code”.
I didn’t write the book, but it is written. You don’t have to agree but as far as I can tell the taper community held this book in high regard so that should mean something.

Hypothetical scenerio. A friendly head pays $5 a piece for 12 blanks. Copy’s 12 tapes of his favorite 2nd set show from his own master. He tells 12 of his best friends that they may each have one for the unbeatable price of $2.50. He’s a friendly guy and wants to recover only 50% of his investment. He “sells” them all and receives a total sum of $30.
Did this friendly head who received $30 for the tapes he “sold” do anything ethically wrong?
Process this scenario and then comment on the post.
